Chrono Odyssey is an open world action MMORPG built using Unreal Engine 5. The game incorporates some novel settings, and it can be seen that this Korean company is trying to make changes on their familiar track.
The biggest difference between Chrono Odyssey and previous Korean MMORPGs is that it also tries to put the combat and guidance of Soul series style (yes, it again) into the game.
Chrono Odyssey uses Unreal Engine 5 engine to create a vast open world experience, allowing players to explore it freely. The game combines medieval fantasy style with an unknown alien invasion background to create a unique and attractive game world view.
The open world design of Chrono Odyssey differs from previous MMOs. Rather than letting players follow a main story, it is more like putting players directly in a hostile sandbox world. The main quest will only give players the minimum guidance and require players to defeat the weird creature Void in Chrono Gate. As for how to become stronger? How to get powerful equipment? How to defeat the enemy? These are up to the players to explore.
If you want to defeat the powerful enemies in the main line, you must first take time exploring the map, collecting materials, earning Chrono Odyssey gold, upgrading your character, and then returning to the main city to prepare your equipment and supplements before you have a chance to challenge successfully.
In the process of map exploration, you will occasionally encounter some dungeons. Besides fighting, there will also be some puzzles or platform jumping designs, but there are no archives in the middle. If you make a mistake, you need to start over again. It is quite a test of the player’s patience!
In addition to the main line challenge, the game also designs multiplayer cooperation content, including large-scale outdoor BOSS battles, and tasks that can travel through different timelines and team up with other players. However, in experience, the performance of these cooperative contents still has a lot of room for improvement.
For example, the system has support team formation, but in actual combat, the interaction between players is limited. When a teammate falls to the ground, there is no clear prompt on the screen, and the rescue time is short. If you encounter a fierce enemy, you often miss the rescue opportunity before you can react, making the overall cooperative experience somewhat weak.
In addition, if it is a wild boss, when the boss is defeated, if the player is not in the battle range, even if they are members of the same team, they cannot get any rewards. So if the player dies in the middle of the battle and is still on the way after resurrection, they can only watch their teammates happily receive the reward. Because of the fast battle rhythm, low fault tolerance, and the design that requires multi-person cooperation, such a reward mechanism may be frustrating in the future.
Chrono Odyssey uses a soul-based action combat system that is relatively rare in MMOs. Compared with other MMOs, it emphasizes dodge, block, and physical management. The battle difficulty is much higher. Any small monster on the road may make you see the familiar words “You died”.
Like regular MMORPGs, Chrono Odyssey has six classes:
Each class has three weapons to choose from and can equip two weapons at the same time. The number of skills of different weapons is independent, and they can be used alternately in battle, which greatly expands the skill set that players can use in actual combat.
As far as the current experience is concerned, the enemy’s movements are not smooth, and they will suddenly move or change movements, making it difficult for players to judge. Many attacks have delays in judgment, and even if you have raised your shield to defend or leave the attack range, you will still be hit. I hope the official can solve these problems before the official launch.
Chrono Odyssey is a very ambitious work to set. Whether it is the picture performance, the battle mechanism of time control, or the MMO game design that integrates Souls style, it shows great potential. However, there is still a lot of room for improvement in combat feel, server stability, multiplayer cooperation design, and the overall game reward mechanism and exploration experience. I hope the development team can polish it well before the official launch.
