Planning for Ultimate Team's starter squads is entering its final stages. Beyond ratings, pace, and PlayStyles, the new season's chemistry adjustments will also influence starting lineup choices - particularly for players accustomed to building hybrid squads using Heroes and ICONs.

In its launch update, EA confirmed that FC 27 will reduce some of the chemistry contributions that ICONs and Heroes provide to their teammates. While these may seem like minor numerical tweaks, they will directly affect common hybrid squad-building strategies.

Chemistry Changes

ICONs still automatically receive full chemistry when played in their correct positions and continue to provide a +1 contribution to all leagues; however, their nation contribution has been reduced from +2 to +1.

Heroes also automatically receive full chemistry in the correct position and maintain a +1 nation contribution, but their league contribution has dropped from +2 to +1. The new Hall of FUT players introduced in FC 27 follow chemistry rules similar to those of Heroes.

EA also plans to reduce the frequency of boosted chemistry on other special items. While some future campaign items may still receive extra chemistry, the specific cards have not yet been revealed.

Hero Nerf

One of the greatest advantages of using Heroes in squad building was their ability to boost the chemistry of teammates from the same league, thanks to their higher league contribution.

With FC 27 reducing this bonus from +2 to +1, Heroes themselves can still easily reach full chemistry, but their ability to assist teammates is significantly diminished. Squads that previously just managed to cross a chemistry threshold may now fall short by a single contribution point.

This change is particularly noticeable in hybrid squads. Previously, if a lineup had only a few Premier League players, adding a single Premier League Hero might have been sufficient; now, you might need to add another Premier League player or bridge the gap using manager, nation, and club links.

Consequently, when selecting Heroes in FC 27, it is more important than ever to focus on the card's individual strength. 

Hero cards with excellent pace, PlayStyles, positional versatility, and in-game performance remain worth using; however, if you are spending a large amount of FIFA 27 coins solely for Chemistry, the value proposition needs to be reconsidered.

ICON Chemistry

Nation contribution provided by ICONs has also dropped from +2 to +1, making it harder than before to use them to boost Chemistry for players from the same nation.

This change most significantly affects players from less popular leagues. Previously, players could quickly gain Nation Chemistry by linking with an ICON from the same country; in FC 27, additional connections are often required.

Especially during the early game when FC 27 coins are scarce, constantly swapping players across multiple positions just to fix Chemistry can easily drive up the total cost of the squad.

However, since ICONs still provide a +1 contribution to all leagues, they remain flexible options for multi-league squads. Unlike Heroes, which tend to favor specific leagues, ICONs are still great for linking different leagues - even if the impact of Nation link has diminished.

Hybrid Squad Impact

Single-league squads are relatively less affected. If your starting XI is already concentrated within the same league, club, or nation, a reduction in contribution can usually be compensated for by other connections.

The pressure is more noticeable for hybrid squads.

Multi-league squads require allocating limited roster spots to different leagues. Previously, Heroes and ICONs helped minimize the number of players needed to satisfy Chemistry requirements, freeing up slots for high-performance cards; with FC 27's reduced contributions, that flexibility is curtailed.

This could also affect the transfer market during the early game. Gold cards with links to popular leagues, nations, or clubs will play a larger role in assembling Chemistry. When stats are comparable, players who help solve squad connection issues often offer greater practical value.

Chemistry Tips

During the early game, you can build the core of your squad around a single league and then fill a few key positions with players from other leagues. This way, even with reduced Hero contributions, swapping out a single card is less likely to disrupt your entire Chemistry setup.

Club links will also become more practical. Players from the same club can often satisfy multiple connection requirements simultaneously, offering a more stable solution for squads that are just shy of the necessary contribution thresholds, compared to constantly relying on special cards to fill gaps.

Heroes are best utilized as powerful starters that provide Chemistry as a bonus, rather than being acquired at a high cost in FUT coins solely to serve as connection tools. 

ICONs still work well in multi-league setups, but if you are relying on one to help a specific nation, check how much Chemistry support the rest of your squad and manager can already provide before locking in the lineup.

This prevents the scenario where, after assembling the squad, you discover a key player is one level short of full chemistry.

Boosted Chemistry Cards

EA has indicated that it will be more cautious about granting boosted chemistry to Campaign Items and other special items in FC 27. As the chemistry contributions of standard Hero and ICON cards have been reduced, sources of extra chemistry will become scarcer overall.

If future campaign cards receive superior chemistry bonuses - whether for leagues, nations, or other categories - their value for squad building could significantly surpass that of standard special cards, as they would reduce the squad's reliance on additional connections.

However, while EA has confirmed it will curb the proliferation of boosted chemistry, it remains unclear exactly which event cards will receive these enhancements. Consequently, squad planning during the early game phase should still prioritize the existing chemistry rules.

Hero and ICON cards will continue to be vital assets in Ultimate Team, even though their efficiency in boosting teammates' chemistry has declined.

For players who enjoy building hybrid squads, FC 27 will place greater emphasis on balancing leagues, nations, and clubs; during the early game, there will be little room to waste any spot in the starting lineup.

Football Ultimate Team in FC 27 introduces more ways to earn, use, and build up Player Items throughout the new season. You will have more ways to obtain Player Items, while collecting and upgrading them can help these items retain their value for longer.

Season 1 brings Ones to Watch, Destined for Glory, and Future Stars together under one theme, continuing to focus on players' performances and potential during the new season.

FC 27 Early Access begins on September 18. Players who pre-order Ultimate or Ultimate+ Edition can enter the game early, one week ahead of Worldwide Launch. Here is a look at Holographic, Gallery, and major Season 1 Campaign content arriving around the launch of FC 27.

Holographic Items

Holographic items were previously announced in FUT Deep Dive, and the latest FC 27 Pitch Notes provide more details about how they can be obtained after launch. Eligible Campaign, TOTW, Hero, ICON, and other special Player Items can appear as Holographic versions in FUT Pack pool.

Players rated 87 OVR or below will become Regular Holographics, while players rated 88 OVR or above will become Pristine Holographics. Eligible Holographics can appear in Store Packs and Reward Packs, and you can also use FUT 27 coins on Transfer Market to obtain specific Player Items.

However, Packs or Player Picks that guarantee a fixed group of specific Player Items will not contain Holographic versions. As a result, Holographic Items will remain relatively random to obtain, which also means they are expected to be highly rare.

Streamlined SBC

Streamlined SBCs will be available when the console and PC versions of FC 27 launch, while Companion App version is planned for later in Season 1.

Unlike traditional SBCs, which require you to submit a complete squad that meets a set of conditions, Streamlined SBCs in EA FC 27 allow you to contribute eligible items across multiple submissions until you reach the required score.

This system is directly connected to player item score. Every player item in Football Ultimate Team receives an Item Score based on its OVR, Rarity, and Holographic status. The same scoring system will also be used for FUT 27 Streamlined SBCs and Gallery.

Each OVR has a base score, with additional bonuses awarded based on the player's Rarity and Holographic status. These bonuses can stack. For example, a Holographic TOTW item will receive both TOTW rarity bonus and Holographic bonus.

Gallery

Gallery is another major new system in FC 27. It allows you to collect Player Items around your favourite Clubs, Leagues, Rarities, and football stories, while introducing a more developed progression system that reduces the pressure of collecting.

When you acquire a Player using FUT coins, the card is added to Gallery Sets. Even if that player later leaves your Club, the Item will remain in your Gallery history. This changes the feeling of previous FUT systems, where selling a player often meant losing their value and connection to your collection entirely.

Completing a set earns club customisation rewards, including club-specific crests and kits. Higher Grades will also provide Gallery Tokens, which can be used to redeem rewards in Gallery Token Store.

Token Store will not remain unchanged. As EA FC 27 progresses, EA plans to add new kits, crests, Holographic rewards, and other content. As you complete more Gallery Sets, your Gallery Level will continue to increase, providing larger rewards at key levels.

At launch, FUT 27 will feature more than 100 Gallery Sets covering major men's and women's leagues and Clubs, alongside Rarity Sets such as Squad Foundations and Team of the Week.

The first post-launch Gallery Set will arrive with FC 27 Worldwide Launch: Season 1 Combined Rarities Set. This set will bring Ones to Watch, Destined for Glory, and Future Stars player items together for collection and display.

Gallery sets will not disappear when a short-term event ends. They will remain available throughout FIFA 27 lifecycle, with new Sets added at specific times.

Ones to Watch

Season 1: Ones to Watch will run from September 17 to October 22, 2026. This is familiar content for FUT 27 players, with EA once again building Campaign around the summer transfer window while placing it within the larger Season 1 theme.

Season Pass offers OTW Player Items and FC 27 coins; additionally, select players can be obtained via SBCs and Objectives starting from Early Access phase.

Ones to Watch player items follow specific rules for their base attributes. Ones to Watch players rated 83 OVR or higher will retain their Base Item Attributes, while players below 83 OVR will be upgraded directly to 83 OVR. Every Ones to Watch item will have at least 60 Pace and all Role++ on their designated Position.

Most importantly, Ones to Watch items can continue to upgrade. Each time a player is selected for FUT 27 Team of the Week, Star Performer, or Player of the Month, their Ones to Watch Item will receive a +1 OVR upgrade. In addition, if the player's club wins three of its next six domestic league matches after September 18, Ones to Watch item will receive a onetime +1 OVR upgrade.

Each season in FC 27 will revolve around a clear theme. Season 1 brings Ones to Watch, Destined for Glory, and Future Stars together, with all three focusing on players looking to prove themselves during the new season.

FC 27 will also introduce Ones We Watched Single Player Live Events, inspired by Ones to Watch from FUT 18, FUT 19, and FUT 20. You can choose a difficulty before facing matches featuring clubs from around the world.

As you progress, OVR of FIFA 27 AI squads will gradually increase, while squad-building requirements will become more demanding. Meanwhile, Season Ladder and Evolution Store will offer Retro Cosmetic Evolutions inspired by these years.

Destined for Glory

Destined for Glory launches on September 25, focusing on players selected by the community as those expected to influence the new season. The selections come from community voting involving EA SPORTS FC 26 Football Ultimate Team and EA SPORTS FC 27 Ratings Database.

FC 27 cover star Kylian Mbappé received the most community votes. The first group of Destined for Glory Player Items also includes Morgan Rogers, who recently joined Chelsea; Matheus Fernandes, who recently joined Tottenham Hotspur; as well as Alexander Isak and Bryan Mbeumo.

Unlike regular special cards in FUT 27, Destined for Glory Player Items will have upgrade opportunities throughout the football season, starting September 18. These upgrades will be based on the players' real-life domestic league performances, with different positions tied to different upgrade milestones.

Midfielders and Attackers will mainly progress through goals and assists, while defensive players will be linked to performances such as clean sheets. The better players perform in real matches, the more opportunities their cards will have to continue upgrading in FIFA 27.

Season 1 in FC 27 is not just about adding several new batches of special cards. Holographic, Gallery, and the various Campaigns are more closely connected, giving some Player Items that were previously sold after use a chance to retain value for a longer period in FUT. The progression paths for Ones to Watch and Destined for Glory are also worth watching.

FC 27 introduces a key adjustment to Football Ultimate Team rewards ahead of its worldwide launch on September 25.

In FC 26, Rivals, Champions, and Squad Battles usually awarded around 500 - 600 FUT coins per match, leaving weekly rewards, Objectives, and Packs to carry most club progression.

FC 27 aims to change that. Post-match coin rewards are increasing across all three modes, eligible matches will grant Season Points, and more rewards will be tradeable.

As a result, continuing to play after completing weekly objectives should still contribute to club growth.

FC 27 Post-Match Rewards

EA cited a baseline of approximately 500 - 600 FUT coins per match for the previous title. In FIFA 27, per-match earnings for Champions and Rivals have the potential to be several times higher, and post-match coin rewards for Squad Battles are also increasing.

There is currently no comprehensive, fixed payout chart, so it is impossible to precisely determine the exact FUT 27 coins earned from a Rivals match or a Champions victory.

EA has stated that Champions and Rivals have the potential to reward several times more coins, though actual earnings may still vary based on the game mode, match results, and future balance adjustments.

Besides coins, eligible matches award between 15 and 100 Season Points, depending on the match outcome and game mode. Players can earn a maximum of 850 Season Points per day through matches.

At a maximum rate of 100 SP per match, the daily cap could theoretically be reached in nine games.However, this represents the fastest possible scenario; the actual number of matches required depends on the chosen mode and in-game performance.

Best Modes for Rewards

As there is currently no complete dataset regarding per-match coin earnings, ranking Rivals, Champions, and Squad Battles based on absolute returns would be unreliable. A more practical way to choose is to consider what else - beyond just coins - each mode allows you to progress in.

Division Rivals

Rivals remains one of FUT’s most reliable daily PvP modes. The game increases FUT coin payouts in this mode, and during the launch phase, all Pack Rewards are tradeable.

Bounties will appear more frequently, allowing players to earn Weekly Reward Points or accelerate their progress through Divisions. The gap in rewards between higher Divisions will also be more pronounced; for instance, Division 1 Upgraded Rewards now include 95,000 coins, multiple high-rated Gold Player Packs, and a TOTW Player Pack.

This means Rivals’ weekly rewards still provide a significant influx of resources, but continuing to play after hitting the milestone requirements won’t result in a rapid loss of economic value, as was the case in the past.

Champions

Champions Finals in FUT 27 retains the 15-match structure, while FUT coin rewards are higher than in FC 26.

Champions continues to offer exclusive rewards and maintains Champions Token system, allowing players to choose reward paths that suit their club’s needs. Additionally, Champions rewards now grant more CQP, helping players build eligibility for future entries.

For competitive players, Champions likely remains one of the most rewarding ways to earn FC 27 coins and other high-value rewards; however, those who don’t consistently play in The Finals can still steadily accumulate resources through Rivals and Squad Battles.

Squad Battles

The role of Squad Battles in FIFA 27 is particularly noteworthy.

Every match awards more FUT coins and Season Points, while still contributing to progress in Weekly Rewards, Objectives, and Evolutions. Furthermore, Squad Battles now awards Champions Qualification Points.

FC 27 has also removed Division 6 requirement for Champions Qualification; players can now work toward Champions eligibility simply by accumulating enough CQP.

This offers a smoother path for players who dislike PvP: they can start by playing Squad Battles to accumulate coins, SP, and CQP, and then decide whether to enter Champions once their squad has taken shape. 

For players just starting out, those with limited squad strength, or simply those who prefer PvE, this setup is significantly more flexible than before. 

Tradeable Rewards

FUT 27 will increase the proportion of tradeable rewards found in Objectives, game modes, and other FUT content. When players acquire items they do not need, they can sell them on Transfer Market for FIFA 27 coins, which can then be used for new players, Evolutions, Premium Pass, or future squad upgrades.

Combined with higher post-match coin payouts, this creates a more complete resource loop within the gameplay itself. Especially during the early stages of the game, a steady income of coins and tradeable rewards will directly influence how quickly a competitive squad can be assembled.

FC 27 Launch Reward Strategy

Players who prefer PvP can make Rivals their primary mode, progressing through Divisions and earning Weekly Rewards, then participating in Champions Finals once they qualify. After completing the requirements for weekly rewards, continuing to play Rivals allows players to keep accumulating coins and Season Points.

Players who prefer PvE can prioritize Squad Battles while simultaneously working on Weekly Rewards, Evolutions, Objectives, Season Points, and CQP. They can attempt Champions once their qualification status and squad strength are sufficient, without feeling pressured to grind through Rivals Divisions just to gain entry.

For players with limited daily time, the priority can be earning Season Points through standard matches while making progress on Weekly Rewards. With FIFA 27 shifting more resources into the matches themselves, there is no longer a need to play every single game mode just to maximize efficiency.

The experience will ultimately depend on coin distribution and game balance upon launch, but based on the mechanics announced so far, continuing to play matches after completing weekly rewards offers significantly more value than it did in FC 26.

OTW is returning to Ultimate Team in FC 27. While veteran players are familiar with this type of dynamic card from past campaigns, the mechanics revealed so far for FC 27 show significant changes.

Why OTW Matters Early On?

Coins are scarce during the early game, yet standard Gold Cards are quickly superseded. A position reinforced by a significant investment today might soon see less expensive or superior alternatives appear - a common source of wasted resources when building early squads.

The advantages of Ones to Watch cards may be further amplified in FC 27. A dynamic card that is already strong enough for the starting lineup can continue to improve alongside the game's meta, provided the player and their team maintain consistent real-world performance. 

Players won't need to constantly swap out players for marginal stat boosts - especially in positions like wingers, strikers, and center-backs that are costly to fill early on. An OTW card that remains viable for weeks can save a significant amount of FIFA 27 coins and reduce the hassle of squad adjustments.

Investment strategies will shift accordingly. In FUT 27, players must now factor in team strength, league schedules, guaranteed starting roles, and the potential for POTM contention when making decisions.

How to Use OTW Early?

If you can secure an OTW card from Season Pass or Objectives at the start, holding onto it often offers more long-term value than rushing to find Gold Cards for minor stat upgrades.

A team's competitiveness in its domestic league is equally vital; the requirement to win three out of six matches naturally gives a head start to key players from top-tier clubs. Attacking players who frequently contribute to goals and earn high match ratings are also more likely to be considered for TOTW, POTM, or other performance-based rewards.

You might also want to hold off on getting standard Gold cards for a bit. After launch, it is best to first review the full details of Season Pass, Objectives, and Ones to Watch acquisition paths before deciding where to invest your resources; this helps minimize the risk of overpaying early on.

OTW cards are ideally suited to extending the lifespan of a starter squad in FC 27. A card that begins with a base rating and grows alongside real-world football performance fosters a deeper, long-term sense of investment in the team.

However, if players can easily acquire multiple high-utility dynamic cards shortly after launch, the logic behind squad building during that first week could shift rapidly. Once the full reward paths are revealed, the market may well settle on its trends earlier than in previous years.

FC 27's Career Mode is finally regaining some attention. The announced changes aim to address long-standing issues such as repetitive save files, stagnant squad evolution, and a somewhat shallow management experience.

These changes are significant enough to alter how players approach a new save. Some plan to start with a wealthy, well-rounded team for a single season to familiarize themselves with the new transfer mechanics before embarking on a serious, long-term rebuild.

Career Mode holds a distinct advantage over Ultimate Team: it allows the use of Authentic Gameplay Settings while still enabling fine-tuning of match details via sliders.

This system is highly practical for those who enjoy customizing parameters. As long as the core gameplay remains stable, sliders effectively control match speed, difficulty, and AI behavior.

The issue arises when major patches necessitate finding a whole new set of settings; customization can quickly become a maintenance burden. While some players enjoy the tinkering process, others simply want to load their save and play, without having to re-test match speed, AI defensive behavior, or passing error settings every few weeks.

For FIFA 27 to offer a more stable long-term experience, the default gameplay needs to remain consistent; only then can sliders effectively serve their purpose of allowing for personalized adjustments.

Fixed Formations Still Restrict Tactics

Even setting aside the impact of future patches, FUT 27 still faces unresolved limitations - specifically regarding formations.

Recent iterations of FC have introduced more Player Roles, with tactical systems increasingly emphasizing position-specific responsibilities. Yet, formation templates remain rigid; asymmetrical setups - such as combining an RM and an LW - often cannot be freely configured.

While this issue might not sway initial purchasing decisions for most players, it becomes increasingly apparent over the long haul. For Career Mode enthusiasts, waiting a few months before picking up FC 27 has little practical impact.

In contrast, starting Ultimate Team late means missing out on significant early-game content. Market conditions and player prices shift, and other players will likely have already established their squads; the progression of building a team step-by-step through matches, trading, and accumulating FUT coins is difficult to replicate later on.

Career Mode is free from such time-sensitive pressures. Whether you start a Sunderland rebuild in September or launch the save in December, the core experience remains the same.

In fact, waiting can actually reduce a great deal of uncertainty. By then, the price will have dropped, initial bugs will probably have been patched, and the direction of gameplay updates will be clearer.
