The game started promisingly, showcasing a bold new direction, but was subsequently overshadowed by a familiar sense of frustration, leaving players with a complex situation.

Now, FC 26 is about to embark on the final leg of its cycle. Let's take a look back at what happened this season.

A Good Start

FC 26 was released in September 2025 to great acclaim. At the time, the game's biggest highlight was the introduction of two distinct game modes: Competitive for online modes and Authentic for offline experiences.

This division addressed a long-standing complaint from the player community - the fast-paced, arcade-style gameplay of Ultimate Team mode had, for years, undermined the enjoyment of the single-player career mode.

FIFA 26 not only boasts more responsive dribbling, smoother passing, and significantly improved goalkeeper AI, but also the noteworthy Authentic Gameplay, where weather, fatigue, and individual stats truly take effect. Players have overwhelmingly praised this new content.

Meanwhile, Career Mode has undergone its most radical overhaul in years, adding Real-Time Manager Challenges, improving the youth academy system, and optimizing AI ​​transfer mechanism. This seems to be the first time in a long time that EA has truly listened to the player community's voice.

Furthermore, Ultimate Team mode had a strong start. The player evolution system is more flexible, and a goalkeeper evolution system has been introduced for the first time. Later, the return of the knockout stage and the new Challenge Mode provided players with more competitive options beyond Rivals and Champions modes. All of this has delighted players.

The gameplay then became increasingly predictable, with matches easily dominated by strong tactical styles. Features like Bruiser and Finesse Shot became so crucial that they distorted player team selection and limited player autonomy.

While these issues frustrated players, the real cause of player attrition was FC 26's aggressive monetization model. EA locked the coveted Icons and Heroes into the season pass, requiring players to spend a significant amount of FUT 26 Coins to acquire them.

Furthermore, EA nerfed the rewards for Rivals and Champions modes, which seems intentional, designed to force players to spend coins trading for card packs. The transfer market, once the lifeblood of Ultimate Team, has become almost meaningless due to its complex evolution chains and the overabundance of high-rated players.

Late-Season Redemption

As FC 26 drew to a close, it introduced two important features that won back some players. Season 8, themed around National Pride and in anticipation of 2026 World Cup, introduced the new PlayStyles Lab. Players could customize cards by manually assigning traits, injecting new strategy into team building.

Currently, FUT in Review community rates FUT 26 between 6.25 and 7.25, a significant drop from the initial 8 points in the first few weeks. This perfectly encapsulates this season: a game with immense potential, ruined by its subsequent decisions, and then frantically trying to make up for it later.

EA FC 26's improvements to Career Mode and its innovative handling of game presets are indeed progress. However, its aggressive monetization model and gradual weakening of the early game's core concepts ultimately proved unacceptable to a weary player base.

I believe that the business model centered around matches is becoming increasingly unsustainable. EA should always remember its player-centric philosophy, listen to player feedback, and address the game's shortcomings so that the series can continue to thrive.
