Corrupted Roots are a new Rare Consumable introduced in Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred expansion. They help players acquire specific types of gears and crafting materials. Highly popular, they differ from other items randomly dropped by monsters.
This article explains how Corrupted Roots work and how to farm them, helping you better obtain and use them in Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred.
About Corrupted Roots
Corrupted Roots are a high-value, targeted acquisition consumable. Unlike random monster drops, you can actively choose when and where to use Corrupted Roots. Planting them in the ground summons waves of enemies, eventually defeating the boss.
The loot you obtain, including specific item slots and crafting materials, depends entirely on the area where you plant the roots. This makes Corrupted Roots one of the best tools for predictably farming monsters in the game.
Before using Corrupted Roots, you must unlock this mechanic via Tree of Whispers War Plans board. This unlocking isn't automatic; you need to invest Whisper points. The mandatory node is Corrupted Roots; you cannot plant any roots until this node is unlocked.
Besides this, the most important upgrade is Roots of Power, which significantly increases the quantity and quality of rewards per root. There's also an optional node, Headrotten Feat, which provides additional bonuses, but has lower priority.
It's strongly recommended that you have at least Roots of Power before using accumulated Corrupted Roots, as the difference in loot is significant.
Where to Find Corrupted Roots?
Corrupted Roots are not dropped by regular enemies in Diablo 4 open world, nor are they obtained from chests or Helltide events. They can only be found in Tree of Whispers Caches. Each chest you obtain and open has a chance to contain one or more Corrupted Roots.
Therefore, obtaining Corrupted Roots essentially means farming Whispers Points as quickly as possible. The more chests you open, the more Corrupted Roots you'll acquire.
World Bosses are an excellent way to obtain Whispers Points. You gain 5 Whispers Points each time you kill a World Boss, and their respawn time is fixed. Before starting any other activity, be sure to check the map to confirm the next World Boss's respawn time. In addition, Legion Events reward 3 Whispers Points, making them worthwhile to participate in if they appear.
PvP area, Fields of Hatred, contains a special boss called Abomination. Defeating him grants 5 Whisper Points. After defeating him, you can purify the collected Seeds of Hatred, gaining an additional 3 Whispers Points.
This means that a single trip to Fields of Hatred can quickly yield 8 Whispers Points, making it one of the most efficient methods if you're willing to accept the risk of being attacked by other players.
Helltides in Diablo 4 are also a good way to earn Whispers Points, but only if you focus on killing Blood Maidens. Summoning and killing Blood Maidens yields a large number of Whispers Points. When farming Corrupted Roots, you should ignore most other Helltides activities, as opening chests and killing random monsters is too slow compared to repeatedly summoning Blood Maidens.
How to Target Specific Loot by Region?
The most powerful feature of Corrupted Roots is that you can control the reward pool by choosing where to plant them. Each major region of Sanctuary focuses on specific inventory slots and specific types of crafting materials. There are no exceptions to this rule; roots planted in one region will never drop into the corresponding inventory slot in another region.
If you need a large amount of Masterworking materials, Hawezar and Dry Steppes are two of the best regions. Hawezar primarily produces Forgotten Souls and Gloves, with Forgotten Souls being essential for almost all late-game crafting and enchanting.
Dry Steppes primarily yields Obducite and Boots. Obducite is a key and highly valuable material for advanced Masterworking.
Scosglen is ideal for obtaining Sigil Powder and Helms; choose this location if you lack Sigil Powder. Kehjistan and Fractured Peaks both reward Chest Armor, but their byproduct materials differ. Kehjistan provides Diablo 4 Gold and Scattered Prisms, while Fractured Peaks offer Ruby Fragments.
If you need rings, head to Nahantu, where Scrolls of Restoration also drop. Finally, if you want Two-Handed Weapons, go to Skovos, which rewards Horadric Cube materials and gems.

Important Strategies for Obtaining Drops
Solo farming of Corrupted Roots drops is inefficient; the game mechanics encourage group farming. Any player who plants a Corrupted Root shares all items dropped by that root with the rest of the party. Different types of items share resources differently; crafting materials and gold drops are equal.
However, Gear drops are obtained individually by each player. This means you can see your own items, and your friends can see theirs. No one can steal other players' items.
Grouping up in Diablo 4 is simple: find three players who also possess Corrupted Roots. Then take turns. One person plants a Corrupted Root, the whole team kills mobs and bosses, and everyone collects the reward.
Then the next person plants a Corrupted Root, and the next person, and so on. In this way, a four-person group farming Corrupted Roots yields four times the amount of items compared to solo farming.
This concludes the article about the new Corrupted Roots item in Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred expansion. Hopefully, this will effectively help you obtain the items you want. Go try it out!
