In Diablo 4 and its Lord of Hatred expansion's endgame system, Forgotten Souls are the rarest crafting material. Refining Ancestral gear, re-rolling stats, and crafting Grand Gems all require a large amount. Regular Helltide loot is inefficient and cannot support high-intensity gear iteration.
For D4 Lord of Hatred's War Plans system, a strategy focusing on Nightmare Dungeon and Escalation Sigil has been proven to be the optimal solution in the current version.
The core perspective is that Forgotten Souls are essentially derived from the dismantling of Ancestral gear; therefore, the efficiency bottleneck is not the individual drop rate, but the total number of Ancestral gear pieces per unit of time.
War Plans
In Lord of Hatred, War Plans points should be concentrated entirely on Nightmare Dungeon and its associated nodes. This skill point allocation is complete around level seven, and each character can have its own independent allocation.
Nightmare Dungeon Left Main Path
First, activate the three nodes on the left path.
War's Bounty Chest: An additional chest appears after the dungeon ends, providing a separate equipment boost.
Soul Trap: Enemies killed during the altar imprison souls; when the altar ends, the souls regenerate as enemies, increasing the monster density in a given dungeon.
Shrine Ambush: Activating the altar immediately spawns seven Elites, each dropping Ancestral gear independently. Combined with Soul Trap, one altar can create two high-density battles.
Conviction Stacking Mechanism
Continue investing downwards along the left path into Conviction stacking nodes. Each Elite or Champion defeated in a Diablo 4 dungeon grants one Conviction stack.
Conviction chest that appears after defeating a boss has an item count proportional to Conviction stack level.
Defeating numerous Elites in regular dungeons grants dozens of Conviction stacks (the exact number depends on dungeon size and monster clearing efficiency). Conviction chests yield additional items, most of which are Ancestral quality.
Cross-Track Nodes
Some nodes in Helltide and Lair boss branches can trigger additional boss-level enemies in Nightmare Dungeon, whose loot quality far surpasses that of regular Elites.
Two Butchers ambush
Invest Helltide points on the left side. Prioritize Ambush, then activate Two Butchers ambush: The single Butchers that might normally appear in the dungeon are replaced with two Butchers linked by chains.
Each Butcher has a high chance of dropping multiple Ancestral gear. In seven to eight D4 dungeons, you can expect this event to trigger at least five times, thanks to its extremely high rate.
For the sake of not spending excessive time on kills, adjust your Torment difficulty downward so you can reliably deal with two bosses.
Beast in the Ice and Amalgam of Rage
Invest your Lair boss points on the right to activate the summon nodes for Beast in Ice and Amalgam of Rage. Completing Nightmare Dungeons have a chance to spawn these two bosses as additional enemies, without consuming a special key.
Each boss drops Unique and Ancestral gear. When using an Escalation Sigil to open Horadric Strongrooms, these bosses also have a chance to appear on each floor. Multiple boss-level enemies may appear in a single Horadric Strongroom, the exact number depending on random triggering.
Sigil and Affixes
All Normal Nightmare Sigils can be upgraded to Escalation Sigils using Horadric Cube in Lord of Hatred. The latter contains two to four floors, each with a set of affixes stacked. The fourth floor always spawns the boss Astaroth.
Escalation Sigils with three affixes offer significantly higher endgame chest rewards than those from regular dungeons; the more affixes, the greater the benefit.
Horadric Strongrooms and Equipment Doll are two high-priority affixes. Horadric Strongrooms are large dungeon rooms that contain dense clusters of Elites and chests, with a monster count far exceeding that of standard rooms.
Equipment Doll: Destructible items are largely replaced with puppets. Destroying these puppets has a high probability of dropping equipment, significantly increasing equipment acquisition outside of combat.
Escalation Sigils can be obtained by crafting five regular Sigils or by direct forging. It is recommended to craft twenty to thirty in advance, keeping Sigils with Horadric Strongrooms or Equipment Doll affixes, and re-crafting or disenchanting the rest.
Operation Rhythm
Set two rules.
Rule 1: Hide all regular Legendary items that are not of Ancestral quality.
Rule 2: If an Aspect in a hidden item can upgrade Codex of Power, the hidden rule will be overridden and the item will be displayed. This filter does not affect Sigils, Talismans, Mythic items, or Unique items.
Completing one Escalation Sigil (level 4) yields approximately 600 Diablo 4 Forgotten Souls, accumulating a large amount of Ancestral gear in your inventory.
It is recommended to return to town after each complete Escalation Sigil and dismantle all Ancestral gear directly at Blacksmith, rather than selling it. The amount of Forgotten Souls obtained from dismantling is significantly higher than other conversion methods.
Using a high-speed clearing class, each complete Escalation Sigil (level 4) takes approximately 12 - 15 minutes, yielding approximately 600 - 650 Forgotten Souls. At this efficiency, you can reliably obtain approximately 2,500 - 3,000 Forgotten Souls per hour.
If your gear is insufficient for quickly clearing the two Butchers, you can appropriately reduce Torment difficulty. Shortening kill times is often more effective than maintaining chief difficulty in increasing Ancestral gear acquisition per unit time.
The essence of quickly acquiring Diablo 4 Forgotten Souls is maximizing the amount of Ancestral gear dismantled per unit time.
In War Plans, prioritize activating the bounty chest on the left side of Nightmare Dungeon, Soul Trap, Shrine Ambush, and Conviction stacking, supplemented by Two Butchers ambush from Helltide branch and Beast in the Ice summon from Lair boss branch.
Use Escalation Sigil, prioritizing Horadric Strongrooms or Equipment Doll affixes. Set a pickup filter to hide non-Ancestral gear, and dismantle all Ancestral gear immediately after each dungeon run.
