In Diablo 4, Charge was primarily a movement skill for Barbarians, mainly used to quickly approach enemies or reposition in combat, rarely used as a pure damage core. However, this has changed significantly in Season 14.
Barbarians can now use the new Burning Archetype, and Charge, combined with Battering Ram, finally has the potential to become a true primary damage skill. Activating Charge causes your character to charge forward at extremely high speed, leaving a trail of continuously burning lava in their wake.
Enemies standing on this burning path will continuously suffer DoT damage. Therefore, this Diablo 4 build needs to focus on enhancing Damage Over Time Multipliers and Damage Over Time Duration, ensuring enemies continue to take significant damage even after leaving the fire zone.
Core Gear Combinations
Among all gear and Legendary Aspects that enhance DoTs, Writing Aspect is a crucial component of Charge Barbarian Build, especially in the higher-level Towers and Pits of Diablo 4, where it further amplifies the performance of damage over time.
Besides directly increasing Damage Over Time Multipliers, this build also heavily emphasizes Duration. Both Wanton Rupture Aspect and Shattered Vow can increase the duration of DoTs, allowing enemies to continuously lose health for an extended period even if they only briefly pass through Burning Trail.
Shattered Vow not only extends DoT Duration, but when an enemy's entire health bar is covered by Burning Damage, Shattered Vow can directly trigger Execute, instantly killing the enemy. This gives the entire build a very smooth mob-clearing rhythm, with the continuous damage creating a very direct harvesting effect, helping you quickly farm Diablo 4 Items.
Chainscourged Mail is an irreplaceable piece of gear for Charge Barbarians, significantly reducing the actual cooldown of Charge, allowing for more frequent use of Charge and continuous Burning Trail. This unique pairing almost entirely determines whether Charge can become a truly playable endgame build.
Charge originally has a base cooldown of 17 seconds. Even with maximum Cooldown Reduction stacking on gear, this cooldown remains a significant weakness. Without Chainscourged Mail, Charge can easily remain in a cooldown state for extended periods in actual Diablo 4 combat, decimating the smoothness of the entire build.
Tuskhelm of Joritz the Mighty provides additional damage multipliers, along with useful attributes like Cooldown Reduction and Fury per Second. Rage of Harrogath leans towards offensive capabilities, helping to reduce skill cooldown when inflicting Burning Damage.
Fists of Fate provides a very considerable average damage multiplier, further enhancing overall damage output. Ramaladni's Magnum Opus provides a damage multiplier based on your character's Maximum Fury.
At higher Torment levels, defensive capabilities are also crucial. Heavenly Strength provides significant damage reduction when equipped with two-handed weapons, which is especially important for push-based playstyles.
Overheating Aspect further enhances Fire Damage and also offers a chance to gain Overpower Charge upon defeating an enemy. Battle Fervor's Aspect is one of the primary sources of Berserking for this build. In actual Diablo 4 combat, simply using Charge will trigger the effect.
Skill Rotation
Charge is the absolute core skill of Charge Barbarian build. Selecting Battering Ram changes the feel of Charge; it eliminates the previously noticeable delayed attack animation and leaves a Burning Trail in the path of your character.
It's important to note that the direct charge damage from Charge isn't the focus of this build; most of the damage comes from the burning area left behind during Charge's movement. Therefore, you don't need to constantly aim to directly hit the target; it's more important to keep enemies on Burning Trail as much as possible.
Iron Skin, combined with Retaliation Variant, increases Maximum Life and weakens enemies attacking you. This skill primarily enhances survivability and can be used immediately after cooldown.
Rallying Cry provides Movement Speed and Resource Generation buffs and can be used frequently, making Fury consumption easier. War Cry primarily provides damage buffs and should be used immediately after cooldown.
Challenging Shout further enhances defensive capabilities. It can be activated actively when taking significant damage or used according to your combat rhythm. Wrath of the Berserker is a powerful burst skill in this build, delivering a large amount of additional damage over its duration.
Talisman
Charge Barbarian build uses Berserker's Crucible Set, which provides good Damage Multiplier, Damage Reduction, Cast Speed, and other Quality-of-Life effects, making Charge casting smoother.
Sescheron's Fury can also be used as an alternative. While it offers higher damage numbers, it might make Charge feel clunky, making it more suitable for Diablo 4 players who prioritize damage ceiling over smooth gameplay.
Talisman prioritizes +1 Charm Slot, followed by bonuses that enhance set effects. For Charm Bonuses, prioritize Martial Skills, and choose useful attributes like Fire Resistance or Lightning Resistance based on your resistances.
For unique charm, Godslayer Crown is a good choice. It reliably pulls distant enemies near your fire trail, bringing more Diablo 4 monsters into Burning Trail and increasing overall monster clearing speed.
Mercenary Choices
For mercenary, Subo is a good choice as a hired mercenary. His Seeker helps reveal Diablo 4 maps, and Molotov, combined with Scorched Earth, further increases DoT damage upon hitting an enemy, making him a perfect fit for this Charge Build.
For reinforcement, Varyana is recommended. Her Bloodthirst increases Attack Speed for a short time, which helps improve the overall skill rotation. If you prioritize defensive capabilities, you can also consider Aldkin's Field of Languish.
