Diablo 4 Season 13 Season of Reckoning is coming to an end. Blizzard has officially released Season 14 PTR Patch 3.1.0 and proclaimed that it will be launched on June 2 PDT, allowing PC players to experience the major changes that will be launched on the eternal server and season server in advance. The official server is expected to be officially released on June 30.
First, you need to know what is PTR? That is, players can import existing characters or create brand new characters to test upcoming features, and all progress will only be retained in the test server.
The development team emphasized that PTR version is not the final version, and everything from career balance to drop rates may be adjusted based on community feedback before the season is officially launched.
The updates revealed in Season 14 PTR include the new season mechanism, the return of the summoning system, the new monster family and Lair Boss, the solo mode that players have long called for, and the most hotly discussed new equipment system reform.
Next, this article will introduce these points to give you a preliminary understanding before PTR goes online.
Core Season Mechanics - Pandemonium Ruptures
Pandemonium Ruptures were introduced in Diablo 4 Season 14 PTR, arcane rifts torn between Sanctuary and Pandemonium. These rifts appear in the open world in three different levels:
- Normal Ruptures: Small rifts that spawn throughout Sanctuary, more frequently in Helltides area. They can be found everywhere, but offer the most basic rewards.
- Surging Ruptures: Can replace any local event in Helltides. You need to complete the event with Mastery within the specified event to maximize the reward.
- Colossal Ruptures: Only the large rift in Fields of Desecration appears, which is World Boss arena southeast of Zarbinzet (the former location of Ashava encounters).
The core gameplay is, killing guardians around Death's Head Idols to create open rifts and cast ritual rings. The longer players keep a rupture open by killing monsters and closing Tears, the greater the rewards. Rupture Goblins can also appear anywhere on the map, opening additional rifts.
Realmwalker 2.0 Returns
In addition, an important regression system - Realmwalker, is directly related to the season mechanism. Realmwalkers were first introduced in Diablo 4 Season 6 and will return in Season 14 with an all-new summoning system tied directly to Rift's difficulty level:
- Normal Ruptures: Cannot summon Realmwalkers
- Surging Ruptures: Grant a chance to spawn a Realmwalker when completed with Mastery within the time limit.
- Colossal Ruptures: Guarantee a Realmwalker spawn upon completion.
After you defeat Realmwalker, a portal opens to Deathtoll Chamber, a single-room micro-area that also appears in Nightmare Dungeons with Rupture affix. Players complete a special Rift event inside for additional rewards, making Deathtoll Chamber the primary source of Greater Lair Keys needed to open Season Boss encounter.
New Monster Family and Lair Boss
Now that we are talking about opening the season boss encounter, we have to mention that a brand new monster family has been added to Diablo 4 Season 14 PTR - Risen. One of their family members, Gravehounds, will appear from the three rifts in the season mechanic mentioned above as well as Deathtoll Chamber.
Gravehounds will drop orbs when killed, and these orbs will slowly float towards a special Risen called an Exarch. Players can intercept the orbs before they reach High Priest, thereby grabbing power for themselves and increasing your chances of winning the battle.
Of course, it is precisely because the existence of Risen family is closely connected to the season mechanism of Season 14 that players are also speculating that this family may not continue to the next season.
In addition to this, there is also the arrival of a new Lair Boss - Corrupted Reaper, which will be waiting for players at the entrance of Pandemonium Threshold entrance in Zarbinzet.
During Season 14 PTR, players can challenge this boss when they reach Torment I or higher difficulty. After waiting for the official server to be launched, you need to unlock it through the progress of season tasks.
To challenge Corrupted Reaper, you need to consume Diablo 4 Greater Lair Keys to open its reward hoard. Blizzard is positioning this boss station as the best single source of obtaining Mythic Unique and the new seasonal currency Pandemonium Fragments in the game.
Solo Self-Found Mode
Solo Self-Found Mode is what players have been clamoring for since the release of Diablo 4 but finally gets a response in Season 14, even though it's a permanent character state that can only be used in Season Realm.
As the name suggests, Solo Self-Found Mode is perfect for lone wolf players who don't want to form a team. If you choose Solo Self-Found Mode, you cannot join any teams or trade with other players, nor can you change your status during the season.
Some players may wonder, what if they want to play solo mode but don't want to fall behind in the rankings on Leaderboards because they don't have a team?
Don't worry, the official has also taken this into consideration, added exclusive SSF Leaderboards in Season 14, and provided a filtering function for solo characters in normal mode and expert mode.
This feature is positioned as an accurate reflection of time investment and skill, eliminating the worry of equipment trading or team grinding affecting leaderboard rankings.
SSF characters can only share independent warehouses, currencies, and Paragon progress with other solo mode characters under the same account. At the end of the season, SSF characters will automatically be converted into Eternal characters, and all restrictions will be lifted.
Equipment System Reform
This is definitely the most amazing change in Diablo 4 Season 14 PTR Patch 3.1.0. At the heart of Season 14 is a complete reimagining of Mythic Unique items. Mythic is no longer a separate item rarity; it becomes a modifiable item quality that can be applied to any Unique.
The new system stipulates that players can obtain Pandemonium Fragments through multiple channels to advance Seasonal Reputation board, obtain Resplendent Caches, and defeat Corrupted Reaper. These Fragments are important crafting materials for upgrading Uniques to Mythic using Horadric Cube.
The main ways to obtain Mythic Uniques in Season 14 are:
- Seasonal and Eternal Realms: Whenever an Ancestral Unique drops, there is a very low chance that it will drop directly as a Mythic Unique.
- Corrupted Reaper Boss: The highest chance source of directly dropping Mythic Uniques and Pandemonium Fragments.
- Season Rank Rewards: Class-specific Mythic Uniques can be obtained through Season Rank progression.
- Horadric Cube Crafting: Directly upgrade any Unique to Mythic.
Although the source of obtaining Mythic seems to be more direct than in previous seasons, there is a fatal limitation. Each character can only equip one Mythic Unique obtained through crafting, while Mythic Unique dropped naturally can be equipped freely. This also limits you to making Mythic Uniques only through blocks. The method is right in front of you, but you can't use it.
There has been a lot of discussion about this update in the player community, and many players even bluntly said that they would not want to play Diablo 4 again because of this change that is superficially enhanced but is actually a hidden rip-off.
They speculated that even if Mythic Unique could be made through Horadric Cube, Pandemonium Fragments, which are important crafting materials, must be very rare, and may even be more difficult than picking up naturally dropped Mythic Unique.
In addition to the above-mentioned new content, War Plans have also been updated. The new work system is basically as follows:
- All team members must be within Temis.
- The captain chooses a new War Plan and consumes two Marks of Eldru.
- All team members must vote to accept.
- Once accepted, the captain's War Plan panel will be accurately synchronized to all players.
Regardless of teammates' respective War Plans levels, story progress, or tournament completion, War Plans will force synchronization. In addition, the activity scaling of War Plans has been increased for Torment VIII and above difficulties.
Overall, Season 14 PTR marks a key milestone in Diablo 4 Season development cycle, giving players an early look at what may be the most transformative Season update since the introduction of Vessel of Hatred expansion.
Players can participate in PTR test on June 2 to have an actual experience with the above-mentioned updated content and provide timely feedback.
As Blizzard has always proven, player feedback from PTR testing directly affects the final official version, and Diablo 4 Season 14 looks set to continue this tradition.
