Seasonal Theme

Three dark wanderers have returned to Sanctuary. You will need to track down Echoes of Prime Evils Mephisto, Baal, and Diablo and return to the classic areas they once left behind. 

Worldstone Chamber, Durance of Hate, and original Diablo's Tristram Cathedral will all become part of your Diablo 4 journey, bringing you back to battlefields that once belonged to Prime Evils.

After completing the related content, you can obtain Splinters of Evil and unlock different Prime Evil Reputation Tracks, gradually unlocking new Diablo 4 items and powers. The classic zones and bosses returning in Season of Hell's Legacy will also be presented through Waking Nightmares activity.

Waking Nightmares

Diablo 4 Waking Nightmares is one of the core activities in Season 15. You will first enter large Waking Nightmares while progressing through Seasonal Questline, and these activities will later remain available as repeatable endgame content.

Currently, Diablo 4 Waking Nightmares can roughly be divided into three different scales. The largest type consists of multi-layered Capstone Dungeons directly connected to Prime Evil seasonal story. 

One route recreates the classic progression from Diablo II Act V. You will start from The Ancients' Way, travel through Mount Arreat, and eventually enter Worldstone Keep, where you will fight Baal.

Another route will take you through Travincal, where you will complete Khalim's Will, destroy Compelling Orb, and finally enter Durance of Hate to face Mephisto directly.

These large Nightmares first appear during Diablo 4 seasonal questline, but they can still be replayed afterward. At higher Torment difficulties in Season of Hell's Legacy, you can also enter Pinnacle Capstones. 

Torment 10 and above will unlock more difficult versions, mainly for players who have completed their character progression and want to continue challenging high-difficulty content.

The second type of Waking Nightmare is closer to a traditional Diablo 4 dungeon. They will appear at fixed locations in Sanctuary and recreate classic locations from Diablo series, including Diablo II's Den of Evil, Forgotten Tower, Maggot Lair, Halls of Vaught, Arcane Sanctuary, Tal Rasha's Chamber, and Worldstone Chamber.

The third type is the smallest in scale and is more suitable for open-world exploration. These nightmares will randomly appear in Sanctuary. Once you enter, you will be taken to an isolated room where you will fight a past boss or groups of classic enemies.

Diablo 4 developers have revealed that Season of Hell's Legacy will feature around 30 such open-world encounters. These include boss fights against Queen Araneae, as well as encounters where you directly face classic enemies such as Flayers.

Chronicles

If you don't want to wait for random encounters, Season 15 also offers Chronicles of Nightmares. They work similarly to Nightmare Dungeon Keys. Once you obtain the corresponding Chronicle, you can actively choose a Diablo 4 Legacy Zone to enter, such as Den of Evil or Forgotten Tower.

Once inside, these classic areas will be remade by Diablo 4 as Minor Nightmares within Burning Hells and will include additional Dungeon Affixes, so the same location will not always provide exactly the same combat experience.

For example, Den of Evil Chronicle comes with two affixes: Horadric Strongroom and Hellbound Elites. The former guarantees that a Horadric Strongroom will appear in the area, while the latter gives Elite Monsters Hellbound Affix and causes them to deal an additional 20% damage.

Forgotten Tower will include Dungeon Delve and Dark Omen. Completing Dungeon Delve provides additional experience and Diablo 4 gold, while Dark Omen means that Nightmare will always contain an additional threat.

Classic Returns

Waking Nightmares in Diablo 4 Season 15 brings back content from Diablo, Diablo: Hellfire, Diablo II, Diablo III, and Diablo Immortal. The season is expected to feature nearly 20 Legacy Bosses and up to 25 Legacy Monster Types.

Classic Diablo II zones are an important part of this returning content. Countess will appear in Forgotten Tower, Coldworm will be located in Maggot Lair, and Nihlathak will appear in Halls of Vaught.

Summoner will guard Arcane Sanctuary, Duriel will return to Tal Rasha's Chamber, and the encounter with Baal will take place in Worldstone Chamber. Arreat Summit will also bring back Talic, Madawc, and Korlic, allowing you to face these Ancients once again.

The return of Maggot Lair in Season of Hell's Legacy also brings classic enemies such as lightning Scarabs and fly swarms back into Diablo 4, making the distinctive insect-filled area part of Waking Nightmares once again.

Nihlathak will also return to Diablo 4 through Halls of Vaught, although Blizzard has not yet revealed his complete skill mechanics or specific drops.

Classic encounters from Diablo I include Aidan, Archbishop Lazarus, The Butcher, and Diablo. From Diablo III, Queen Araneae will appear in Chamber of Queen Araneae, while Diablo Immortal's Zaka will appear in Pit of Anguish. Together, these encounters form the nostalgic part of Waking Nightmares.

Besides the classic zones and bosses returning through Waking Nightmares, Season 15 will also bring back nine Legacy Uniques. These D4 items will remain in Diablo 4 after the season ends and will be available in both Seasonal and Eternal Realms.

They include Leoric's Crown, Nemesis Bracers, Stone of Jordan, Squirt's Blouse, Arioc's Needle, Henri's Perquisition, In-Geom, The Furnace, and Messerschmidt's Reaver.

Waking Nightmares brings much of Diablo series' past 30 years into Diablo 4, creating a more direct connection between Season 15 and the previous Diablo games.

For longtime players, what may really be worth looking forward to is not simply seeing familiar names again, but experiencing what these classic battlefields will actually feel like after being remade in Season of Hell's Legacy.

The direction of future updates for Diablo 4 is shifting. During BlizzCon 2026, officials revealed that no further expansions are currently in the planning stages; instead, upcoming content will focus primarily on Seasons and the continuation of the storyline.

However, a lack of current plans is not the same as a permanent ban on future expansions. Blizzard has not completely closed the door on them; development on D4 Seasons, new classes, system overhauls, and narrative content will continue.

It is simply that these elements may no longer be bundled together and released all at once in a single expansion, as was done in the past.

A Shift in Update Strategy

For the past few years, the game's content structure has revolved around a "Season + Expansion" model. Seasons maintained a steady update cadence, introducing new mechanics, Diablo 4 items adjustments, and gameplay loops, while expansions delivered large-scale growth, consolidating story, zones, and core system changes into a single major update.

Vessel of Hatred expanded Sanctuary to include Nahantu, and Lord of Hatred took players to Skovos, adding new campaign content, endgame activities, and system adjustments along the way.

For players, these expansions served as crucial milestones for major game growth at regular intervals.

If the current plan holds, Diablo 4 may no longer feature these periodic, massive content milestones following Lord of Hatred.

Content that previously launched alongside an expansion - such as maps, story arcs, classes, and gameplay features - might now be distributed across various Seasons, Class Packs, and system updates, resulting in a more fragmented update rhythm.

What Might Be Lost?

Large-scale Diablo 4 campaigns are likely to be the most affected. Expansions allowed for a complete narrative centered on a primary antagonist and region, driving the main storyline forward over a significant span of time.

With Lord of Hatred advancing Story of Hatred centered on Mephisto, developers have already indicated that the narrative will gradually transition toward Story of Terror. Without a third expansion, this part of the story will probably unfold incrementally across multiple future Seasons.

Large-scale zone expansions will also become harder to predict. Both Nahantu and Skovos serve as platforms for expansions, allowing for the synchronized expansion of maps, dungeons, quests, and storylines within the same region.

While new locations may still appear in the future, one should not expect the release of another full-scale expansion-tier zone - at least not at the pace seen in the past - until an official announcement regarding the next major content plan is made.

Massive updates that bundle a new zone, a full campaign, multiple systems, and endgame content into a single release may also become increasingly rare. Such content may still find its way into the game, but it will no longer need to be packaged together into a single expansion.

New Classes and System Updates

Amazon class has already set the precedent here. It is scheduled for a standalone release in the first half of 2027, decoupling it from any major Diablo 4 expansion.

Four playstyles have been revealed so far: Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger, and Commander. Ranger leans toward ranged bow combat, while Skirmisher utilizes a new javelin weapon type.

Amazon serves as an example that future classes do not necessarily have to launch alongside an expansion. Classes can be released individually, while other content is distributed across seasons and long-term updates.

Filling the Void

While seasons can continuously introduce new mechanics, Diablo items, and gameplay loops, they are cyclical by nature, meaning some content inevitably disappears when a season ends.

If long-term updates rely too heavily on this cycle, Sanctuary risks a scenario where gameplay constantly shifts, yet the volume of permanent content fails to grow significantly.

Consequently, future seasons may need to shoulder a heavier load. Beyond delivering fresh gameplay every few months, they must advance the narrative and gradually integrate certain systems into the core game.

Class packs, endgame updates, and other permanent additions will need to fill the remaining gap left by the absence of traditional expansions.

The decision to forgo further expansions marks a clear turning point for Diablo 4, but it certainly doesn't signal the end of updates. Diablo 4 will continue to evolve beyond Lord of Hatred; it is simply that the traditional expansion model - so familiar to players - will no longer be the primary vehicle for the game's growth.

As for Diablo 5 - set roughly a century after the events of Diablo 4 - that belongs to a future chapter of Sanctuary's story. Before reaching that point, the developers must prove that Diablo 4 can continue to expand and evolve with no other expansion.

Diablo 4 Season 15 introduces the brand-new Soul Splinters mechanic.

Eight Soul Splinters

Splinter of Anguish

Splinter of Anguish provides Fire Resistance while boosting Critical Strike Chance and Attack Speed. Depending on rarity, the bonuses to Critical Strike Chance and Attack Speed ​​are 15%, 20%, 25%, or 35%. Its downside is a 30% increase in primary resource consumption.

Splinter of Anguish is highly attractive for builds in Season of Hell's Legacy that rely on critical hits to trigger effects, stack buffs via attack speed, or cast skills frequently.

Higher attack speed improves the feel of combat and can help certain skills trigger key mechanics more quickly. However, 30% increase in resource consumption significantly affects skill rotations - particularly for builds that rely heavily on Core Skills but have limited resource regeneration.

Splinter of Sin

Splinter of Sin grants Lightning Resistance and increases Maximum Life by 10%, 20%, 30%, or 40%, depending on its quality. In exchange, the character's Maximum Primary Resource is reduced by 30%.

The boost to Maximum Life enhances survivability, making it suitable for builds that need to withstand significant damage or rely on health for defensive mechanics.

For Diablo 4 melee characters and playstyles that require staying in the fray, this extra health is very useful.

However, 30% reduction in Maximum Resource can affect skill casting frequency, resource reserves, and the special mechanics of certain classes. In Season of Hell's Legacy, even with high health, a character's survivability can be compromised if they cannot cast key skills in time.

Splinter of Lies

Splinter of Lies grants Cold Resistance and boosts Gold drop rates, crafting material drop rates, and experience gain efficiency. Depending on quality, it increases Gold and crafting material drops by 40%, 60%, 80%, or 100%, while also providing a 25% bonus to experience gain.

For leveling, gold farming, collecting Diablo 4 crafting materials, and daily farming in Season of Hell's Legacy, it maximizes the rewards from repetitive monster-slaying activities - making it ideal for characters who can already clear enemies efficiently.

However, Splinter of Lies comes with a severe downside: the character remains permanently Weakened and Vulnerable.

Being Weakened hampers combat performance, while Vulnerable state significantly increases the damage taken. This means that even a character with high damage output could rapidly lose health because of a single mistake.

Splinter of the Black Soulstone

Splinter of the Black Soulstone grants a bonus to all stats, with values ​​of 7, 20, 30, or 50 depending on quality. Upon killing an enemy, the character absorbs a soul that lasts for 15 seconds; each soul increases damage dealt by 2%, 3%, 4%, or 5%.

This effect stacks, but the duration does not refresh. Each soul increases the damage the character takes by 0.5%. This means that while Diablo 4 players gain higher damage output during Season 15, they also face progressively greater pressure on their survivability.

Splinter of Pain

Splinter of Pain grants poison resistance and provides 10%, 20%, 30%, or 40% damage reduction. Its downside is a 30% reduction in movement speed.

Damage reduction benefits melee characters, stationary DPS builds, and setups that require tanking sustained hits. When facing rapid-fire damage or persistent AoE attacks, consistent damage reduction increases the margin for error for Season 15 characters.

However, 30% movement speed penalty hinders positioning, chasing, dodging skills, and adjusting one's location during combat. For Diablo IV builds that rely on rapid movement to maintain offense or defense, this cost can be significant.

Splinter of the Mother

Splinter of the Mother grants physical resistance and makes the character Unhindered. Coming into contact with enemies inflicts Vulnerable status on them for 10 seconds. Depending on the quality, the character becomes Stunned for 4 seconds after making contact with 100, 150, 200, or 250 enemies.

Unhindered status helps mitigate movement-impairing effects during combat, while the ability to apply Vulnerable simply by touching enemies makes it easier for melee builds to maintain pressure on foes.

Splinter of the Mother is highly compatible with builds that need to stay close to targets, frequently move through crowds of monsters, or rely on Vulnerable debuff to boost damage output.

The issue lies in 4-second stun triggered after reaching the contact threshold. In Diablo IV scenarios involving high-density monster packs or elite encounters, a 4-second period of being crowd-controlled can be extremely dangerous, especially if the character is surrounded by enemies.

Splinter of Hellfire

Splinter of Hellfire grants resistance to all elements and increases damage dealt by 40%, 60%, 80%, or 100%. Its downside is the loss of 100% Critical Strike Chance.

In terms of damage bonuses, Splinter of Hellfire is the most aggressive choice among the eight Splinters. The highest quality offers a 100% damage increase alongside all-element resistance, providing significant offensive and defensive benefits for certain builds.

However, losing 100% Critical Strike Chance directly affects skills, Diablo 4 items, and Legendary effects that rely on critical hits.

If a player's build in Season of Hell's Legacy relies on critical hit procs, critical damage multipliers, or resource mechanics tied to critical hits, this cost might offset - or even outweigh - the benefits provided by Splinter itself.

Splinter of Damnation

Splinter of Damnation provides Shadow Resistance. Defeating an Elite pack temporarily increases Monster Power by 1, with the effect lasting 10, 15, 20, or 25 seconds depending on Splinter's quality.

• Splinter of Sin (Azmodan): Greatly increases maximum health, but reduces maximum primary resource.
• Splinter of Lies (Belial): Increases gold, Diablo 4 items, and experience gain, but permanently inflicts Weakness and Vulnerability.
• Splinter of the Black Soulstone: When killing an enemy, you gain a stacking damage bonus for each soul absorbed, but each stack also increases the damage you take.
• Splinter of Pain (Duriel): Greatly increases damage reduction, but reduces movement speed.

Necromancers are arguably the biggest winners, receiving buffs to a range of skills, including Blood Surge, Blood Lance, Army of the Dead, and Corpse Explosion. Blizzard also adjusted Soulrift, making it more prominent in Shadow damage-over-time builds.

Paladins, long considered the weakest class in Diablo 4, received buffs to their Oaths and Core skills in Season of Hell's Legacy, especially Judgement-based build, whose damage now scales with skill level.

Campaign Difficulty Feels Outdated

When Diablo IV first launched, the pacing of leveling, gear acquisition, and build power differed significantly from the current state of the game.

After multiple seasons of skill adjustments, gear system updates, and expanded progression, players can finalize their core builds much earlier and easily achieve the damage output needed to melt bosses during the story phase. 

Access to stronger Diablo IV items also makes it easier for characters to outgrow the campaign's intended difficulty curve.

Consequently, the existing difficulty caps for the campaign feel increasingly conservative. Even when a character's power clearly surpasses Expert tier, the game offers no way to further increase the story's difficulty.

The issue here isn't that the campaign needs to be brutally difficult.

Newcomers to Diablo 4 still require a relatively gentle progression curve, and the story mode shouldn't force everyone to face endgame-level enemy scaling. However, players who can handle higher difficulties currently lack options.

When a final boss fight - built up over dozens of hours - ends in mere seconds because character power has vastly outpaced the story's difficulty, a boss like Lilith (intended to be the narrative climax) fails to deliver the tension and challenge the encounter deserves.

Season 15 Could Widen The Gap

They offer effects that influence stats like critical hit chance, attack speed, health, damage reduction, and damage multipliers, while also introducing negative effects that force players to rethink their build compositions.

In addition, D4 Season 15 will introduce new Legacy Uniques and adjust systems related to Mythic items, giving players even more ways to improve their D4 items and overall build power. 

Meanwhile, Season 15 PTR has begun offering more testing opportunities for high-power characters. New Challenge Dungeons allow players to enter portals and face off against formidable bosses.

At Torment difficulty, players can even raise Challenge Dungeon's difficulty level - up to three Torment tiers above the current World Tier - in exchange for greater rewards.

Overland Ambush is another feature aimed at high-power characters; players are hunted by demons in the open world and can choose to either flee or stand and fight.

Blizzard has clarified that Challenge Dungeon encounters in PTR are primarily for system testing, and the content in the official Season 15 release remains subject to change.

While Season 15 already allows players to manually increase the difficulty of certain endgame content - even challenging enemies beyond their current Torment level - characters remain locked to Expert difficulty when replaying Lilith storyline.

As Soul Splinters, new gear, and build synergies continue to boost character power, the difficulty cap on the original campaign feels increasingly outdated.

More Ways To Raise Difficulty

Current viable adjustments can be categorized into several levels.

The most conservative approach is to unlock Penitent difficulty earlier, giving characters that have clearly outgrown Expert power levels access to a higher difficulty setting.

A step further would be to allow Torment difficulty for the campaign once a character reaches a certain level or meets the requirements to unlock that difficulty tier. Going even further, the game could introduce a New Game+ style system, enabling high-level characters to replay the entire main storyline.

D3 offers a straightforward point of comparison. Adventure Mode and Story Mode can be experienced separately, and characters can choose higher difficulty levels when re-entering the story based on their current strength.

In contrast, while Diablo 4 features a complete main storyline and boss encounters, it lacks a way for fully developed characters to engage with this content repeatedly.

Of course, simply unlocking Torment might not fully resolve the issue. Higher difficulties usually come with better items and faster progression; if character power continues to scale rapidly, the campaign could quickly lose its challenge once again.

Therefore, in the long run, Blizzard may need to consider independent difficulty scaling, progression rate adjustments, or replay mechanics.

What Could BlizzCon Change?

BlizzCon 2026 is also scheduled to take place around this time. Blizzard has confirmed that BlizzCon 2026 will take place on September 12-13.

In addition to Opening Ceremony, Diablo franchise will feature a Developer Update on September 12, followed by a dedicated Diablo IV: What's Next session on September 13; officials state this segment will cover upcoming content, features, and future plans.

However, there is currently no official word indicating that Blizzard plans to announce adjustments to Campaign difficulty at BlizzCon, so it is premature to assume this change is confirmed for Season 15.

That said, Diablo IV Season 15 PTR reveals that Blizzard is introducing more high-difficulty challenges for powerful characters. Challenge Dungeons allow for increased Torment Tiers, and Overland Ambush encounters are clearly designed for high-performance builds.

In contrast, the base Campaign remains capped at a relatively low difficulty level, making this disparity increasingly apparent.

If a final boss like Lilith can be defeated in mere seconds, the actual gameplay experience differs vastly from the game's launch, even if the main story content itself remains unchanged. As the seasonal system continues to expand, Campaign's difficulty and replayability warrant a fresh look.

Diablo 4 Season 15 is about to begin, and the new season's Splinters, Charms, War Plan Skill Tree, and gear drop mechanics will all affect how efficiently you develop your character in the early game.

If your goal is to increase your power as quickly as possible and push toward Torment 12, you cannot focus solely on clear speed during the leveling phase. Early planning is also essential.

Charms and Gems

In Diablo 4 Season 15, the resistance value on Charms will increase significantly. A GA resistance roll, which was previously around 787, is expected to rise to approximately 3,000, although the exact value may still change. The scale of this increase is large enough to affect gear choices.

As a result, a Charm with +2 Hellfire Scales and GA resistance could be more valuable than one with +3 Scales alone.

Three skill ranks provide approximately 7% damage, while higher resistance directly improves survivability. For long-term farming in Diablo 4, giving up a small amount of damage for greater toughness may offer better practical value.

The addition of Splinters in Diablo 4 S15 will further increase the value of Charms. Splinters provide fixed types of resistance. For example, a Splinter that already provides poison resistance can cover part of your poison resistance requirements. However, if your character is still lacking fire resistance, a Charm with fire resistance becomes more valuable.

This is because socket availability will become more limited in Season of Hell's Legacy. Many D4 builds may consider using Leoric's Crown, and if both Jewel Slots are occupied by Splinters, Helm can no longer rely on Gems to provide additional resistance.

Chest and Pants sockets will usually need to be reserved for runes, leaving fewer slots available for flexible elemental Gems. Weapon may become one of the few equipment slots that can still be adjusted freely.

Therefore, there is no need to stockpile large quantities of every type of Elemental Gem in Season 15. For a pure fire build, you can prioritize crafting Rubies during the leveling phase, then convert excess Gems and Diablo 4 items through Jewel crafting.

War Plan Skill Tree

If your main goal is to level efficiently in Diablo 4 S15, Whisper-related points should be invested in Corrupted Roots and Fortune or Famine first. These nodes allow higher-quality caches to provide large amounts of Corrupted Roots.

Diablo 4 Corrupted Roots can provide Volatile Primordial Dust, Tuning Prisms, and Forgotten Souls. Volatile Primordial Dust is used to craft Transfigured Items, Tuning Prism is used for Amulet Aspects, and Forgotten Souls are important materials for crafting and upgrading D4 gear later on.

By comparison, Nightmare Dungeon-related points have a lower priority early on. Investing three points is sufficient. If you need more Escalations, you can choose Branching Pathways. If your main goal is farming Attuned Primordial Dust, Fearless Conviction may be worth considering instead.

For Diablo 4 Helltides, you can invest three points in Bursting Brood to obtain more Keys from Maggots. If you have additional points available, Hell's Prize is another option, as Helltide Chests have a decent chance of dropping Mephisto Keys for Mephisto Encounters.

Under City requires a more situational approach. If your main goal is experience, Jade Epiphany is one of the most valuable early investments in D4. The experience orbs provided by Maggots in Season of Hell's Legacy will probably be nerfed, although the exact extent of the change remains unknown.

If Maggots' experience gains are reduced to one-third of their original value or even lower in Diablo 4 S15, Under City will become a much more important leveling location. If you are farming Greater Tributes of Armament, you can invest points in Idols of War instead.

Five Greater Tributes of Armament can be combined through Cube Amalgamation to create one Mythic Tribute, which is important for Mythic Farming later on.

Diablo 4 boss-related points are also worth prioritizing. Several nodes in the central area can help you access higher Ultimate Nemesis Layers and increase your chances of obtaining Mythic Seals. By comparison, Infernal Hordes can be left for later unless they receive additional buffs.

Leveling Route

After reaching Level 70 in Season 15, if you want to improve your gear level quickly, you can first visit PvP Area to look for special chests. These chests can provide Diablo 4 items with higher levels, helping shorten the early gear gap.

Once you obtain the gear and improve your character's power, unlock Torment 1 first, then return to Diablo 4 PvP Area to open the chests again. After entering Torment 1, the chests can provide Ancestral Gear, allowing you to complete your first major gear upgrade more quickly and move into the next stage of farming.

You can then raise your Diablo 4 Paragon to around 125. 125–130 range is particularly important because it allows you to unlock five Paragon Boards and their corresponding Legendary Nodes.

Early in Diablo 4, prioritize Legendary Nodes that provide significant improvements to your build. As for gaining Paragon levels, experience remains the key factor. If Maggots' experience gains are not heavily nerfed, they will probably remain the preferred option.

If Maggot's rewards are significantly reduced in Diablo 4 Season of Hell's Legacy, you can consider leveling through Under City with Jade Epiphany. Under City's Experience Orbs appear at higher Tiers, so it can still provide consistent leveling value even if Maggots become less efficient.

Once you reach around Paragon 125, Legendary Runes will gradually become more important. Some legendary runes are core components of specific builds and may even determine whether a build functions properly.

Therefore, when you obtain excess Rare Runes during the early stages of Diablo 4, consider converting them into Legendary Runes. Five rare runes of the same type can be combined through Amalgamation to create one random legendary rune.

The efficiency of leveling in Diablo 4 Season 15 will depend heavily on how well you allocate resources during the early game. For players preparing to push toward Torment 12, there is no need to rush after perfect gear. Using your available resources to build up power and transition smoothly before gradually refining your build is the more reliable approach.
