Defending in FC 27 now relies more heavily on your own input than before. Many defensive situations that AI teammates could previously handle now require you to switch players quickly, adjust your position, and make tackles yourself.
If you are still used to waiting for AI to automatically tackle, it is easy to give your opponent more space to keep progressing. To make your defending more consistent, you need to take a more active role in 1v1 situations. Once you become familiar with the controls in actual matches, you will find that manual defending has plenty of room to shine in FUT 27.

Next, EZG.com will introduce several useful manual defending controls in FC 27 and explain how to use them in different defensive situations.
Button Player Switch
Button Player Switch is one of the most important defensive tools in FIFA 27 and needs to be used more frequently. It is an important way to win back possession. For example, when an opponent carries the ball from the wing toward the middle, your defender may already be positioned to block the attacking route while using Second Player Press to have another player track the ball carrier.
However, in EA FC 27, even if an AI player is already close to the ball carrier, they may not automatically perform a tackle. In this situation, a better approach is to press L1 or LB for Player Switch, directly switching to the player closest to the ball in a FUT 27 match, and then handling 1v1 yourself.
In many cases, simply making this switch allows the player to automatically perform a tackle from the right position. If you want to win matches and earn FIFA 27 coins, this change is something you need to adapt to quickly, especially around the penalty area.
Jockey
Tackling in FC 27 puts more emphasis on defensive positioning and the timing of your challenges. When defending, use jockey first to limit the opponent's attacking route and maintain a suitable defensive distance. Do not lose your position too early because you are eager to win the ball. As long as you keep compressing the opponent's space, their options on the ball will naturally become more limited.
In FUT 27 1v1 situations, you can use L2 or LT to jockey and follow the opponent's movement while paying attention to their dribbling rhythm and body direction. Timing and position are extremely important. When the opponent turns, suddenly changes direction, or there is an obvious ball contact, the ball may briefly move away from their feet.
If the defender is already in the right position at this moment, you can immediately use Tackle to win back possession. This is the ideal moment for FIFA 27 Decisive Tackle to make an impact. Hesitating for too long may give the opponent another chance to move forward, while making the challenge at the right time can directly stop the attack.
Jockey is not only about staying with the ball carrier. You can also use your positioning to block the opponent's passing options, gradually reducing the available passing space through the middle and on the wing. In EA FC 27, the fewer routes the opponent has available, the easier it is to force them to slow down, pass backward, or attempt a direct breakthrough.
When the opponent reaches this state, where their attacking options are limited, FC 27 defender can gradually close down while continuing to watch Dribbling Direction. Especially near the penalty area, there is no need to rush into a tackle. Simply keep compressing the space and prevent the opponent from easily finding passing lanes. This makes a later tackle or interception much easier to execute.
Second Player Press
Second Player Press remains very useful in FIFA 27, but you should not hold it continuously. If you bring a fullback or another defender into Second Player Press too early, you may pull them out of their original position and create a new gap.
A more effective approach is to control the space first. Once you have restricted the opponent's movement and confirmed that you can get support from a midfielder, use Second Player Press in FUT 27 to bring midfielder into the defensive action.
This allows more FIFA 27 players to become involved in defending. When midfielder starts following the ball carrier, you can continue using your defender to cover important areas. This reduces the opponent's options and makes it easier to create an opportunity to enter a 1v1 situation.
Physical Challenge
With Advanced Defending enabled, you can use X or A to perform a Physical Challenge. Although Physical Challenge has been weakened somewhat in EA FC 27, it can still effectively disrupt the opponent when the defender is in the right position and approaches from the side.
Especially when you are unsure whether you should use a tackle immediately, Physical Challenge can be a relatively safe way to apply pressure. As long as the positioning is correct, a midfielder, winger, or even striker can use Physical Challenge to put pressure on the ball carrier.
Early Pressure
Midfielders and attackers can also become involved in defending early in FIFA 27 instead of waiting until the attacking player reaches the penalty area. For example, if the opponent is carrying the ball on the wing and you expect them to look for a pass into the middle, you can switch to a nearby midfielder and move into Passing Lane early. This gives you a chance to stop the attack directly with an interception.
The key is to move early. If attackers and midfielders can complete an interception or tackle in midfield or even in the attacking half, they can reduce the opponent's chances of reaching dangerous areas, control the tempo of the match, and help you win more consistently while earning FC coins.
Center Back
One of the easiest mistakes to make when defending in EA FC 27 is pulling a Center Back out of the defensive line to win the ball. This is especially important in a four-defender formation, where Central Area between two center backs needs to remain intact as much as possible.
If you move directly toward the ball carrier, you can easily leave a clear gap for the opponent to use a pocket for a pass or forward run. When using a Center Back in FIFA 27, try to maintain Defensive Line and use jockey to limit the opponent's attacking routes and passing options instead of leaving your position too early.
If you need to apply more pressure, you can switch to a nearby midfielder and defend from the side or behind. This way, even if Physical Challenge or tackle fails, Center Back can still protect the center of FUT 27 defensive line.
EA FC 27 Manual Defending places greater emphasis on defensive positioning and the timing of your inputs. Once you become familiar with these techniques and how they work together, you can gradually reduce your dependence on Defending AI and make your defending more consistent. Once you master this rhythm, you can take more control of different attacking situations and the match itself.
