Helldivers 2 Devoid of Liberty 7.1.0 is now live, focusing on several recurring issues that have affected the game. Some of these problems had existed for a while, and once they appeared during a mission, they were difficult to avoid through normal gameplay.

Alongside bug fixes, Devoid of Liberty also adjusts enemy spawns, mission difficulty, and several weapon mechanics. Some of these changes directly affect the pace of combat during missions.

Community Feedback Changes

Unoccupied Vehicles

Patch 7.1.0 first addresses an issue that had confused many players. Previously, vehicles could become targets for enemies even when no player was driving or using them. This behavior has now been reverted in Helldivers 2, and enemies will no longer target unoccupied vehicles. FRV and Supply FRV will also be more convenient to use during missions.

Reinforce

Patch 7.1.0 also fixes a relatively serious Reinforce bug. Previously, in some situations, you could die and become unable to re-enter mission, even after a teammate used a Reinforce Stratagem. Once this happened, you basically had to leave Helldivers 2, and it could even force the entire mission to be interrupted.

Ragdoll and Stagger

Ice Planet Hazard on Arctic Planets has also been adjusted. Previously, this Hazard made you more susceptible to Ragdoll and Stagger effects, frequently interrupting combat. Patch 7.1.0 fixes the related issue and reduces these abnormal control effects.

Bug Infestation Zone

Previously, Bug Hives on different planets could have similar visual appearances, sometimes making it difficult to feel that you were in a different biome. Fog and some effects in bug Infested zones have also been reduced and adjusted, making it easier to see the battlefield. However, this change does not affect high-level Infestation areas, such as areas inside Gloom or on Hive Worlds, where the stronger visual effects will remain.

Balancing

Enemy Spawn

In previous versions of Helldivers 2, enemy reinforcements could sometimes become overly concentrated around one player, especially when the team split up across the map.

After run diving or splitting up, one Helldiver could end up being chased by large numbers of enemies while another player stayed away from combat for an extended period and completed objectives along the way.

Helldivers 2 Patch 7.1.0 changes how enemy spawn is distributed. When Helldivers are spread across different areas of the map, the system now considers the number and distance of enemies to calculate the current enemy pressure on each Helldiver.

Previously, when part of Enemy Budget was assigned to enemies far away from a player, there could be noticeable gaps in combat around that player. Now, if your current enemy pressure is low, Helldivers 2 is more likely to allocate enemy budget near you, keeping combat pressure more evenly distributed between different players.

When the number of enemies exceeds the current Helldivers 2 Enemy Budget, enemies farther away from you will also be prioritized for despawn. The released enemy budget can then be redistributed to locations that need more combat pressure, reducing situations where you enter an outpost and find almost no enemies around you.

Helldivers 2 Patch 7.1.0 also increases enemy spawn numbers for four-player squads, allowing four-player missions to maintain a higher enemy density.

Evacuate High Value Assets

Devoid of Liberty adjusts difficulty of Evacuate High Value Assets missions. Previously, some factions did not create enough combat pressure, especially in Terminid missions. The long waiting time between waves could make the overall pace feel slow.

Helldivers 2 increases the maximum number of waves, shortens the intervals between waves, and increases the number of enemies spawned in each wave. As mission progresses, Encounter Points now increase more significantly based on the number of players, with 3–4 player squads facing denser enemy encounters later in mission.

Mission level design has also been adjusted. Loot locations and weapons are now randomized, with 3 random loot groups that can generate ammo, health kits, grenades, and weapons. Mission also adds 10 Common Samples, giving you more Helldivers 2 items while defending generator.

Helldivers 2 has also increased the chance of Shriekers to spawn. They can attack generator from the air, further increasing the pressure during defense. Generator UI now also displays its health percentage, making it easier to check its remaining health and defense status in real time.

Weapons and Stratagems

AR/GL-21 One-Two

AR/GL-21 One-Two receives a Grenade Buff, increasing the number of Grenades it can carry and improving the ammunition supply issue it previously had. However, this change does not solve the weapon's core problems. Rifle portion of AR/GL-21 One-Two remains average, while its ergonomics are also relatively low.

Orbital Precision Strike

Orbital Precision Strike now has its cooldown reduced by 10 seconds, allowing it to be used more frequently. However, Buff is relatively small, while Precision remains a more noticeable problem.

Because of changes to Super Destroyer's positioning mechanics, the actual landing point of Orbital Precision Strike is not always as precise as its name suggests. The changes in Helldivers 2 Devoid of Liberty improve its usage frequency, but its accuracy issues still remain.

De-Escalator

Previously, De-Escalator would not damage its user when used at close range. You could fire it directly at your feet while dealing with enemies at close range, giving it useful applications in close - quarters combat.

After Patch 7.1.0, De-Escalator now damages its user. Only players equipped with EX-03 Prototype 3 Armor can continue using it at close range in this way. This removes one of De-Escalator's more unique playstyles and gives it a more conventional role as Helldivers 2 Support Weapon.

Bug Fix

Patch 7.1.0 also fixes numerous smaller issues. Previously, Roaches and Crushers could pass through the floors of certain structures and enter the defensive area in Defense missions. Enemies could attack generator from underground, leaving you unable to fight back and potentially destroying Sentries and other defensive equipment.

Evacuate Citizens missions also fix an issue where Citizens could not find Shuttle Bay. This could previously cause a mission soft lock. Citizens can now properly reach Shuttle.

In addition, Helldivers 2 fixes several Water, Audio, POI, Visual Effects, and Xbox-related issues, including Input failing to Buffer when opening Map while in Vehicle Walk mode, abnormal Animation issues with P-33 Missile Pistol, as well as other Crash and Voice Line problems.

Patch 7.1.0 starts addressing some of the gameplay issues that have gradually become more noticeable during long-term Helldivers 2 play. These changes do not reverse the game into something different, but they can affect how missions feel during actual gameplay. 

If the developers continue making adjustments around these practical issues, mission experience in Helldivers 2 still has room for further improvement.

Speculation regarding the next Helldivers 2 Warbond is already mounting. Given current discussions surrounding 2026 roadmap, a new Warbond is highly likely to arrive in September.

However, Arrowhead has yet to reveal a specific name, theme, or list of rewards, so any current talk of weapons, armor, or gameplay mechanics remains purely speculative.

Amidst this speculation, Helldrivers concept has recently resurfaced. Unlike simply guessing themes like ice, lasers, or medical support, Helldrivers concept offers a framework that could incorporate FRVs, previously glimpsed but unreleased gear, and older datamined content.

If Arrowhead has retained any of those original designs, repurposing them into a new Warbond would feel like a natural fit.

Why Is Helldrivers Being Discussed Again?

The element most strongly associated with Helldrivers is FRV.

While vehicle gameplay has already been introduced to H2, there is still plenty of room to expand the equipment and combat systems centered on FRVs.

Previous vehicle-related content wasn't released in the concentrated manner originally anticipated, leaving gaps in the initial Helldrivers concept.

If that content was split up or adjusted during development, redesigning the theme and adding a few new Helldivers 2 weapons, armor sets, and utility items would be enough to create a complete Warbond.

Of course, there is currently no official news regarding a Helldrivers comeback. This theory gains traction largely because existing, scattered pieces of content fit together so naturally.

FRVs Could Be the Core

If Helldrivers were to return to H2 in some form, FRV would likely be the most recognizable element.

One candidate frequently mentioned is Incinerator FRV.

Conceptually, an FRV with a distinct combat role would serve perfectly as a Warbond's flagship reward; paired with vehicle skins, armor, and mobility-focused gear, the theme would quickly establish a strong identity.

This approach also makes it easier to differentiate the new release from existing Warbonds compared to simply adding another standard rifle. FRV inherently offers strong gameplay potential; simply by adding different armaments, special functions, or new compatible H2 items, the vehicle could play a much more significant role in missions.

However, the Incinerator FRV remains merely a candidate for now. Old datamined data only confirms that certain designs once existed; it doesn't prove they remain on the current development roadmap, let alone guarantee their inclusion in September Warbond.

Old Gear Could Return

One advantage of this speculation is that there is already a pool of previously datamined content that could theoretically be pieced together.

Frequently mentioned items include armor with KD perks, Incinerator FRV, laser rifles featuring explosive or overcharge mechanics, Molotov cocktails, and area-control gear like caltrops and stun mines.

While these items might not share a perfectly unified visual style, their gameplay roles align well. FRV facilitates rapid movement and repositioning; Molotovs, caltrops, or stun mines restrict enemy advance routes; laser weapons bolster infantry firepower; and the armor provides new passive effects.

This structure also helps explain why Mobilize 2.0 idea keeps coming up. Even if the visual aesthetics aren't entirely consistent, recombining these legacy assets creates a cohesive gameplay experience.

A Mobilize 2.0 Setup

If Arrowhead adopts a similar approach for Helldivers II, the structure of this Warbond is easy to envision.

Two armor sets, one or two weapons, a throwable item, plus vehicle-related rewards, capes, player cards, skins, and emotes would easily constitute a complete package.

The key is including one or two items that significantly alter loadout strategies; otherwise, despite a high volume of rewards, the actual gameplay experience might not differ much from previous Warbonds.

As for how much of these old designs has actually been retained, no one knows for sure yet. Since datamined content may have been altered or even scrapped, Mobilize 2.0 is better viewed as a descriptive label rather than a potential official name.

Other Possible Themes

Beyond Helldrivers, speculation regarding the next H2 Warbond often points to themes like Arctic, Laser, or Medic, as well as concepts involving Acid or Illuminate technology.

While these themes offer plenty of room for expansion, current discussions remain largely theoretical - focusing on what could be done - without a clear, direct link to the upcoming September Warbond.

Helldrivers concept, however, is bolstered by existing assets like FRV and legacy gear, making it feel like a more fully realized option at this stage.

Pressure on September Warbond

The longer the wait for the next Helldivers II Warbond, the greater the pressure to deliver a substantial number of rewards and gear that offers genuine gameplay variety.

If a long wait culminates in nothing more than a few pages of cosmetics and a sidegrade weapon that functions similarly to existing options, Warbond will struggle to make a lasting impression - no matter how visually appealing the theme might be.

What is really needed now is gear that significantly alters gameplay - such as new vehicle roles, area-control tools, or weapons with unique mechanics.

From this perspective, a Helldrivers Reworked theme makes a lot of sense. It centers on the eye-catching FRV and allows for the integration of previously shelved equipment; with a restructured lineup, it could offer a distinct feel compared to standard elemental themes.

Arrowhead has yet to confirm any specific details regarding September Warbond, so themes like Laser, Arctic, Medic, and Acid remain possibilities. However, based on current clues, a Helldrivers-inspired rework stands out as a particularly logical and cohesive direction.

Whether September Warbond ends up revisiting Helldrivers or goes in a completely different direction will only become clear once Arrowhead reveals it.

Lore

Helldivers 2's recent Galactic War has seen a perplexing change. As Major Order progresses, the battleground has suddenly shifted from Void content to Terminid faction, with new missions directly leading us to the yellow zone.

This Major Order is called Dissident Manhunt. Helldivers 2's official explanation is that a Terminid outbreak has occurred in Brilliance, causing a serious malfunction in TCS Plus Array. Multiple nodes are failing, and Terminids may have breached TCS Plus defenses and spread throughout the planet.

According to Super Earth, this is clearly not an ordinary incident, but dissident sabotage. Ministry of Truth has confirmed that the planets Gacrux, Gar Haren, and Luxuriant harbor extremists, therefore Helldivers must liberate these planets and bring these dissidents to justice.

However, in a tutorial video released by the official Helldivers 2 team, Galactic War Table can be seen around 14-15 second mark. This content is not entirely the same as what we see today; Void has reappeared, along with numerous icons that don't currently exist.

While this doesn't directly prove that new Void content will definitely be added in the future - these images could simply be older versions from the development process - it's still difficult to ignore this detail.

More importantly, Helldivers 2 previously showcased the environment they used when creating Hive Worlds, a version we've never actually seen. So, are these just scrapped ideas from the development process, or will they reappear in the future?

The issues with Calypso and DSS remain unresolved. Calypso has disappeared from Galactic War Table, and there has been no new communication regarding DSS. Calypso was once one of the key planets on which Illuminate truly began its invasion, and a crucial part of Illuminate storyline in Helldivers 2.

However, Calypso is now completely absent from the current Galactic War table. What's even more confusing for players is that the official statement says Calypso never existed, so what was Illuminate invasion we experienced before?

Combined with Helldivers 2 official patch notes mentioning pierced the void for now, it's difficult to believe this storyline has completely ended. If Void was indeed only temporarily dealt with, then these sudden disappearances might simply be the story entering another phase, and we just have to go through a relatively uneventful transition period first.

Armor

Besides the storyline, Helldivers 2 players have also been discussing armor customization recently. After Voidwalker Helmet was released, many players began hoping that armor could have more colors and variants.

Simple armor color changes wouldn't be difficult to implement in Helldivers 2. The current problem is that we often encounter situations where a particular armor perk perfectly suits our playstyle, but helmet and armor don't mesh at all.

If we could freely adjust armor colors, even with limited color schemes, it would reduce the compromises we make when choosing builds and perks. After all, sometimes we just want Helldivers 2 Items that look best to us.

New Stratagems

Another unresolved issue is Stratagems that the new Helldivers 2 campaign will bring. There's been a lot of speculation in the community, including SEAF troops, Flamethrower FRV, and Orbital Gas Barrage.

Flammethrower FRV seems quite likely, as we've already encountered related content through campaigns, and it's been consistently believed that it will be officially added to Helldivers 2 at some point in the future.

As for SEAF Troopers, it doesn't seem so plausible at the moment. It's more like a modifier than Stratagems that Helldivers can directly call. If you enter a planet already affected by SEAF Troopers and then bring more SEAF Troopers in, the entire mechanics could become very strange.

As for Orbital Gas Barrage, some players believe it will be a highlight of the next Title Update, but this hasn't been officially confirmed by Helldivers 2.

Board Game

In addition, the delay of Helldivers 2 Board Game has once again sparked player dissatisfaction. This physical game was announced about two years ago, but it still hasn't been delivered. The latest information indicates that delivery has been postponed to October 2026.

Helldivers 2 Update 7.0.0 is arguably the most anticipated update for PS5 Pro players recently. While Helldivers 2 already supported PSSR on PS5 Pro, the actual graphics were somewhat soft, details were blurry, and some particle effects suffered from noticeable rendering issues.

This patch officially adds an upgraded PSSR upscaler and fixes some issues with effects passing through walls. In actual gameplay after the update, image sharpness, detail, and overall clarity have all improved significantly, there are significant improvements in image sharpness, detail, and overall clarity, finally making PS5 Pro's visual advantage noticeable again.

However, while the biggest graphics issues have been addressed, Helldivers 2's original performance weaknesses are now more apparent. Frame drops during intense battles still occur, so 7.0.0 seems to primarily address PS5 Pro's most noticeable graphics problem.

PSSR Graphics Improvement

PS5 Pro players who restarted the game after updating to Helldivers 2 7.0.0 will immediately notice a significant improvement in graphics clarity.

Character and weapon outlines are sharper, distant terrain is less blurry, and overall sharpness and detail have significantly improved. Especially in less demanding scenes, PS5 Pro now delivers a clean look approaching 4K output.

These were precisely the most noticeable issues with the previous Pro. PSSR was supposed to utilize a lower internal rendering resolution to reconstruct a clearer image, but Helldivers 2's earlier implementation of PSSR was less convincing, resulting in blurry scenes and a loss of distant detail.

Therefore, some players in the community felt that the older PSSR didn't look as good as the older native 1440p output. However, after Update 7.0.0, this gap has been largely bridged.

Now, back in the game, PS5 Pro's visual advantages are finally more apparent, with some players even feeling that the current visual quality surpasses that of the regular PS5's graphics mode.

At least in terms of graphics, the previous situation where stronger hardware resulted in a blurrier image has finally improved.

Effects Adjustments

Previously, PS5 Pro had a noticeable issue: some particles and effects would render abnormally, even passing through walls.

This is not the same issue as PSSR itself. The new PSSR primarily improves image reconstruction, making the visuals clearer; however, large-scale battles involve enemy AI, physics effects, and a significant amount of battlefield computation, so CPU load isn't eliminated by PSSR upgrade.

Therefore, Helldivers 2 remains relatively stable during normal map exploration, but in scenes with dense Terminid swarms and multiple enemy groups appearing simultaneously, PS5 Pro may still experience frame drops.

A similar situation exists on PC, indicating that while 7.0.0 resolved the graphics issues, it hasn't completely resolved the performance pressure of the game in complex battles.

Stability Improvements

In the early days of Helldivers 2 on PS5 Pro, the game actually ran more consistently than on the regular PS5. Although the resolution advantage wasn't significant, the frame rate performance was relatively better.

Pro update released in early 2025 actually introduced new problems. The actual performance of PSSR was less than ideal, with softer graphics and the performance advantage not being fully realized, making the overall PS5 Pro experience somewhat awkward.

Therefore, while 7.0.0 does bring PS5 Pro closer to its original state, the performance issues are not completely resolved.

Dynamic Resolution

PS5 Pro can also be compared to Xbox Series X. While both are gaming consoles, Xbox Series X uses Dynamic Resolution Scaling (DRS), while PS5 Pro currently operates closer to a fixed 1440p resolution.

The function of DRS is quite straightforward: when combat pressure increases, Helldivers 2 can temporarily lower the internal rendering resolution to reduce GPU load, restoring it once the scene pressure decreases.

In contrast, fixed resolution offers less room for adjustment. If certain scenes simultaneously put significant pressure on both GPU and CPU, DRS can at least alleviate some of the burden by lowering the resolution.

However, it cannot solve all frame drops. If the bottleneck primarily stems from CPU computations such as enemy AI, physics effects, and battlefield logic, simply lowering the resolution will offer limited assistance.

The upgraded PSSR has already significantly improved image reconstruction; therefore, if PS5 Pro can incorporate a more flexible dynamic resolution strategy in the future, it might further improve frame rate stability during high-intensity combat while maintaining image quality as much as possible.

Update 7.0.0 has addressed Helldivers 2's most noticeable graphical weakness on PS5 Pro, and the upgraded PSSR has brought its visual advantages back into play. The next issue to resolve, naturally, is the frame rate drops that persist during large-scale battles.

The debate surrounding the difficulty of Helldivers 2 can no longer be viewed simply as a balance issue. The initial chaotic feeling at launch was once its most distinctive feature. However, as the player base grew, the developers faced unique challenges.

Compared to similar games, Helldivers 2 maintained around 40,000 concurrent players even on weekends without updates or announcements, and quickly attracted more players upon the release of Devoid of Liberty - something other games in the genre struggled to achieve.

This difference speaks volumes: the developers are now creating a truly mass-market cooperative shooter. At this scale, difficulty is no longer just a matter of designer aesthetics; it directly impacts player retention.

Therefore, the game's increasing ease over the past year isn't particularly surprising. For the company, tens or even hundreds of thousands of active players are clearly more convincing than a small group of highly satisfied hardcore players.

Difficulty Compromise

Helldivers 2 offered ten difficulty levels, which initially provided players with a wide range of choices. If you find the chief difficulty too stressful, you can lower it; if you want a challenge, you can continue to climb higher.

D4 and D5 are suitable for a more relaxed experience, D7 and D8 start to test skill, and by D10, the difficulty level can be significantly increased, which is understandable. After all, the game doesn't require all players to play the highest difficulty; it can retain some challenging space suitable only for a select few.

However, the developers are clearly hesitant to make the highest difficulty too drastic. Players can certainly say, "Just stick to your design philosophy," but the feedback the developers actually see is often more direct:

Weapon nerfs lead to more complaints and player loss; increased firepower and a decrease in overall difficulty lead to a rebound in reputation and activity. After several rounds, the balance naturally becomes more cautious.

So now a somewhat delicate situation has emerged. Players enter D10 with powerful Helldivers 2 Items from Update 7.0.0, and as long as all four players have a certain level of skill, many missions don't present much survival pressure. Core players feel the highest difficulty isn't hard enough, while others think if it's too easy, then bring less powerful gear.

However, if players want sufficient pressure at the highest difficulty level, they have to actively give up useful gear and impose limitations on themselves, which suggests that the game itself doesn't offer enough challenge for high-level players.

Reasons for the Compromise

However, from the perspective of ordinary players, Helldivers 2's difficult system is hard to say is entirely flawed.

The core selling point of Helldivers 2 is its exhilarating gameplay; forcing everything to be like a sponge of ammo won't result in a truly high-quality, hardcore experience.

Commercialization here seems to have pushed these adjustments a bit too far. Each adjustment has a justification, but when piled up, the highest difficulty gradually loses its original sense of pressure.

Reward-Driven Development

The argument of lowering the difficulty if you can't beat it has another unavoidable problem: Helldivers 2 itself encourages players to climb higher.

Higher difficulties provide more samples, more medals, and faster experience gain. Some enemies and giant lairs are only consistently visible at higher difficulties.

For many players, D9 and D10 aren't just challenge modes; they're also more efficient places to farm resources.

This puts the developers in an awkward position. If D10 is designed according to hardcore players' expectations, the failure rate will significantly increase. Regular players who flock to it for samples, medals, and experience will also be affected.

Forums will soon be flooded with posts like "Why are the new gear forcing me to play on this difficulty?" and "I only play two hours a day and now I'm stuck here." After experiencing massive player backlash over balance issues, the official team can no longer completely ignore such voices.

This is where commercialization truly affects difficulty. Trying to make D10 valuable while also ensuring a comfortable experience for casual players - keeping these two goals aligned long-term - will probably ultimately harm the difficulty itself.

The Balance Point

The official team's desire to retain more players is completely understandable. Helldivers 2, having reached its current scale, can no longer operate entirely as a niche, hardcore co-op game. Stronger weapons, smoother combat, and less frustration have indeed helped it attract many people who wouldn't normally play this type of game long-term.

However, with ten difficulty levels, the highest two or three levels are bound to cause some frustration. Casual players can comfortably play D6 and D7, while hardcore players get overwhelmed in D10 - these two things can coexist.

The genuine issue that needs adjustment is the overly tight link between high difficulty and resource efficiency. If the developers were willing to try making resource gains more similar across difficulty levels (D7 and above), players would naturally be more willing to stay at a difficulty that suits them.

Helldivers 2 has already made significant concessions in difficulty for commercial reasons, and these concessions have indeed resulted in a more user-friendly experience and potentially better player retention.

However, after making these concessions to this extent, the developers should also consider reserving a space for core players at the highest difficulty level.
