Helldivers 2 community has recently become lively again. With the release of a new official infographic, many players are speculating whether the game still has unreleased content, especially the previously revealed Void-related storyline, which may not have truly ended.

Galactic War Table isn't particularly advanced yet. You still need to deal with planets like Gar Haren and Luxuriant. The official information on the new Stratagems remains unclear, and there's been no further explanation of what will happen next.

Several mysteries from before have resurfaced. This seemingly peaceful period in Helldivers 2 might just be a brief pause before the next major event.

Lore

Helldivers 2's recent Galactic War has seen a perplexing change. As Major Order progresses, the battleground has suddenly shifted from Void content to Terminid faction, with new missions directly leading us to the yellow zone.

This Major Order is called Dissident Manhunt. Helldivers 2's official explanation is that a Terminid outbreak has occurred in Brilliance, causing a serious malfunction in TCS Plus Array. Multiple nodes are failing, and Terminids may have breached TCS Plus defenses and spread throughout the planet.

According to Super Earth, this is clearly not an ordinary incident, but dissident sabotage. Ministry of Truth has confirmed that the planets Gacrux, Gar Haren, and Luxuriant harbor extremists, therefore Helldivers must liberate these planets and bring these dissidents to justice.

However, in a tutorial video released by the official Helldivers 2 team, Galactic War Table can be seen around 14-15 second mark. This content is not entirely the same as what we see today; Void has reappeared, along with numerous icons that don't currently exist.

While this doesn't directly prove that new Void content will definitely be added in the future - these images could simply be older versions from the development process - it's still difficult to ignore this detail.

More importantly, Helldivers 2 previously showcased the environment they used when creating Hive Worlds, a version we've never actually seen. So, are these just scrapped ideas from the development process, or will they reappear in the future?

The issues with Calypso and DSS remain unresolved. Calypso has disappeared from Galactic War Table, and there has been no new communication regarding DSS. Calypso was once one of the key planets on which Illuminate truly began its invasion, and a crucial part of Illuminate storyline in Helldivers 2.

However, Calypso is now completely absent from the current Galactic War table. What's even more confusing for players is that the official statement says Calypso never existed, so what was Illuminate invasion we experienced before?

Combined with Helldivers 2 official patch notes mentioning pierced the void for now, it's difficult to believe this storyline has completely ended. If Void was indeed only temporarily dealt with, then these sudden disappearances might simply be the story entering another phase, and we just have to go through a relatively uneventful transition period first.

Armor

Besides the storyline, Helldivers 2 players have also been discussing armor customization recently. After Voidwalker Helmet was released, many players began hoping that armor could have more colors and variants.

Helldivers 2 Update 7.0.0 is arguably the most anticipated update for PS5 Pro players recently. While Helldivers 2 already supported PSSR on PS5 Pro, the actual graphics were somewhat soft, details were blurry, and some particle effects suffered from noticeable rendering issues.

This patch officially adds an upgraded PSSR upscaler and fixes some issues with effects passing through walls. In actual gameplay after the update, image sharpness, detail, and overall clarity have all improved significantly, there are significant improvements in image sharpness, detail, and overall clarity, finally making PS5 Pro's visual advantage noticeable again.

Now, back in the game, PS5 Pro's visual advantages are finally more apparent, with some players even feeling that the current visual quality surpasses that of the regular PS5's graphics mode.

At least in terms of graphics, the previous situation where stronger hardware resulted in a blurrier image has finally improved.

This is not the same issue as PSSR itself. The new PSSR primarily improves image reconstruction, making the visuals clearer; however, large-scale battles involve enemy AI, physics effects, and a significant amount of battlefield computation, so CPU load isn't eliminated by PSSR upgrade.

Therefore, Helldivers 2 remains relatively stable during normal map exploration, but in scenes with dense Terminid swarms and multiple enemy groups appearing simultaneously, PS5 Pro may still experience frame drops.

A similar situation exists on PC, indicating that while 7.0.0 resolved the graphics issues, it hasn't completely resolved the performance pressure of the game in complex battles.

Stability Improvements

Update 7.0.0 has addressed Helldivers 2's most noticeable graphical weakness on PS5 Pro, and the upgraded PSSR has brought its visual advantages back into play. The next issue to resolve, naturally, is the frame rate drops that persist during large-scale battles.

The debate surrounding the difficulty of Helldivers 2 can no longer be viewed simply as a balance issue. The initial chaotic feeling at launch was once its most distinctive feature. However, as the player base grew, the developers faced unique challenges.

Compared to similar games, Helldivers 2 maintained around 40,000 concurrent players even on weekends without updates or announcements, and quickly attracted more players upon the release of Devoid of Liberty - something other games in the genre struggled to achieve.

This difference speaks volumes: the developers are now creating a truly mass-market cooperative shooter. At this scale, difficulty is no longer just a matter of designer aesthetics; it directly impacts player retention.

Therefore, the game's increasing ease over the past year isn't particularly surprising. For the company, tens or even hundreds of thousands of active players are clearly more convincing than a small group of highly satisfied hardcore players.

Difficulty Compromise

Helldivers 2 offered ten difficulty levels, which initially provided players with a wide range of choices. If you find the chief difficulty too stressful, you can lower it; if you want a challenge, you can continue to climb higher.

However, the developers are clearly hesitant to make the highest difficulty too drastic. Players can certainly say, "Just stick to your design philosophy," but the feedback the developers actually see is often more direct:

Weapon nerfs lead to more complaints and player loss; increased firepower and a decrease in overall difficulty lead to a rebound in reputation and activity. After several rounds, the balance naturally becomes more cautious.

So now a somewhat delicate situation has emerged. Players enter D10 with powerful Helldivers 2 Items from Update 7.0.0, and as long as all four players have a certain level of skill, many missions don't present much survival pressure. The core selling point of Helldivers 2 is its exhilarating gameplay; forcing everything to be like a sponge of ammo won't result in a truly high-quality, hardcore experience.

Commercialization here seems to have pushed these adjustments a bit too far. Each adjustment has a justification, but when piled up, the highest difficulty gradually loses its original sense of pressure.

Reward-Driven Development

The argument of lowering the difficulty if you can't beat it has another unavoidable problem: Helldivers 2 itself encourages players to climb higher.

Higher difficulties provide more samples, more medals, and faster experience gain. Some enemies and giant lairs are only consistently visible at higher difficulties.

For many players, D9 and D10 aren't just challenge modes; they're also more efficient places to farm resources.

This puts the developers in an awkward position. If D10 is designed according to hardcore players' expectations, the failure rate will significantly increase. Regular players who flock to it for samples, medals, and experience will also be affected.

Forums will soon be flooded with posts like "Why are the new gear forcing me to play on this difficulty?" and "I only play two hours a day and now I'm stuck here." After experiencing massive player backlash over balance issues, the official team can no longer completely ignore such voices.

This is where commercialization truly affects difficulty. Trying to make D10 valuable while also ensuring a comfortable experience for casual players - keeping these two goals aligned long-term - will probably ultimately harm the difficulty itself.

The Balance Point

The official team's desire to retain more players is completely understandable. Helldivers 2, having reached its current scale, can no longer operate entirely as a niche, hardcore co-op game. Stronger weapons, smoother combat, and less frustration have indeed helped it attract many people who wouldn't normally play this type of game long-term.

However, with ten difficulty levels, the highest two or three levels are bound to cause some frustration. Casual players can comfortably play D6 and D7, while hardcore players get overwhelmed in D10 - these two things can coexist.

The genuine issue that needs adjustment is the overly tight link between high difficulty and resource efficiency. If the developers were willing to try making resource gains more similar across difficulty levels (D7 and above), players would naturally be more willing to stay at a difficulty that suits them.

Helldivers 2 has already made significant concessions in difficulty for commercial reasons, and these concessions have indeed resulted in a more user-friendly experience and potentially better player retention.

However, after making these concessions to this extent, the developers should also consider reserving a space for core players at the highest difficulty level.

Major updates to Helldivers 2 typically focus on new war bonds, new enemies, and new battlefield environments, which are often the most discussed aspects among players.

However, in Devoid of Liberty updates, the changes that truly impact daily gameplay go beyond these obvious alterations. Many adjustments hidden in the corners of the patch notes are subtly changing the pace of combat, team coordination, and even affecting survival rates in some missions.

These changes aren't advertised in a flash, nor are they explicitly announced upon login, but after completing a few missions, you're likely to find: this place feels much more comfortable than before.

Super Credit Acquisition

Whether unlocking new warbounds or obtaining desired equipment, almost every player has a stage where they focus on the efficiency of Super Credit acquisition.

But in the past, Factory Worlds weren't a good place to find Super Credits. Many players searching for resource points in these Automaton battlefields often only found enemy lines, rarely seeing any Helldivers 2 Super Credits.

Devoid of Liberty changes this. Now, players have a chance to find Super Credits while performing missions in Factory Worlds. 

For regular players, this means that exploring the map while completing quests might yield additional rewards; and for players focused on resource gathering, it eliminates the need to repeatedly rely on fixed routes.

Throwable Visualization

Helldivers 2 combat heavily relies on teamwork. Sometimes, what equipment a player carries can significantly affect the entire squad's strategy.

However, a strange problem existed: teammates had no idea what throwables you were carrying. Whether you had Incendiary Grenade, Thermite Grenade, or other special equipment, unless you explicitly told them, everyone had to wait until combat to find out.

This issue was finally resolved in Update 7.0.0. Now, teammates can directly see what throwables you're carrying, eliminating guesswork.

This change might seem minor at first glance, but the difference is significant in a four-person squad.

For example, when preparing to clear Terminids Nest, the team can know in advance who will handle buildings and who will deal with large targets, avoiding the situation where a teammate isn't carrying the corresponding equipment halfway through the fight.

Hunter Attack Changes

Hunters have always been one of the most troublesome units for Helldivers 2 players.

They are fast, numerous, and often pounce suddenly when players aren't paying attention. Many Helldivers have become accustomed to quickly creating distance when they see a swarm of Hunters.

For players driving FRVs before Update 7.0.0, these little bugs weren't a significant threat, as FRV provided excellent protection against Hunter packs.

However, now Hunters can directly attack FRVs in melee. While they aren't yet capable of easily destroying vehicles, Helldivers are no longer safe when driving with these bugs nearby.

Increased Downed Recovery Speed

On Helldivers 2 battlefield, falling down is practically uncommon.

You might be thrown into the air by an explosion, knocked off by an enemy, or even simply roll down a height due to a misjudgment.

Previously, the recovery animation after being knocked down was rather lengthy, especially when facing a Terminid Swarm rush or Automatons' firepower. The time spent lying on the ground was often enough for the enemy to finish off the player.

In Devoid of Liberty, the game has shortened the recovery time from a severely knocked-down state. According to testing, the average recovery time, which used to be about 1.32 seconds, has now been reduced to about 0.8 seconds.

It may seem like only half a second less, but it could be the difference between life and death. You might just be able to get up, get a Stim injection, and continue fighting, or you might be a little too slow and only see your Super Destroyer receive another deployment request.

SEAF Soldier Optimization

Many players previously viewed SEAF soldiers primarily as extra firepower on the battlefield. They were good at drawing enemy attention, but relying on them to eliminate key targets was unrealistic.

However, in Devoid of Liberty, the presence of SEAFs has significantly increased. They will now actively attack enemy spawn points, including Terminid caves, Automatons manufacturing facilities, and other targets that continuously spawn enemies. 

In other words, players no longer need to manually clear all spawn points every time. With SEAF assistance, you can focus more on main missions and direct combat.

Of course, they're still far from a true four-person squad, but at least now they're genuinely helpful battlefield support.

Hit Feedback Fixes

Helldivers 2 previously had a confusing issue: the on-screen hit indicator didn't always represent actual damage.

Sometimes you'd see your attack hit, but the enemy wouldn't take the expected effect, which was especially prone to misjudging your damage output in chaotic combat.

Devoid of Liberty has addressed this issue. Now, indirect explosion damage, turrets, orbital attacks, and Eagle Airstrikes will no longer incorrectly trigger hit markers, and the feedback for melee, laser, and fire weapons will be more accurate.

This change might not be immediately noticeable to new players, but for veteran players who have experienced various "I clearly hit!" moments, the combat feedback will be significantly more reliable.

After all, on the battlefield of Helldivers 2, you not only need to know where the enemies are, but also whether your attacks are effective.

The changes brought by Devoid of Liberty aren't just confined to the update announcements. Many modifications will only be felt by players once they're actually on the battlefield, and these subtle optimizations are making every mission in Helldivers 2 smoother.

Since the addition of Vote Snatchers in Update 7.0.0, the combat pressure in Helldivers 2 has significantly increased.

When facing regular enemies, players can usually rely on fixed weapon configurations and familiar combat methods to resolve battles. However, Wretches and Crushers force players to adjust their strategies.

The key to dealing with these two types of enemies is not simply increasing damage, but rather choosing appropriate weapons and combat methods based on their characteristics. Understanding their attack patterns allows players to handle combat more consistently.

Wretches

Wretches' Weaknesses

Many players, upon first encountering Wretches after Devoid of Liberty, instinctively aim for the head. While headshots are generally effective against regular enemies in Helldivers 2, the head is not a priority target for Wretches.

Even if a headshot is landed, Wretches may continue moving and close in on the player. Without confirming they are incapacitated, they are easily vulnerable to close-range attacks while reloading or repositioning.

When facing Wretches, prioritizing attacks on their limbs is better. Damaging their limbs effectively restricts their movement and is more effective in dealing with multiple targets approaching simultaneously than simply aiming for headshots.

Especially when a group of Wretches charges, reducing their movement speed is more important than precisely eliminating a single target.

The difficulty with Wretches lies primarily in their frequent appearance in groups during high-difficulty missions. If players remain stationary while attacking, they are easily surrounded at close range.

Wretches are Immune to Stun

Many players prioritize weapons or equipment with stun effects to create space when facing melee enemies. However, this method is less effective against Wretches.

Wretches are unaffected by stun effects, and even Helldivers 2 Items, which rely on stun control, are ineffective in preventing them from closing in.

Therefore, dealing with Wretches requires choosing weapons that allow for sustained damage. High-rate-of-fire weapons, area-of-effect weapons, and incendiary equipment are all effective in limiting their approach.

And because Wretches move relatively quickly, the timing of weapon attacks is equally important.

Weapons with long reload times and limited handling can easily put players at a disadvantage when facing large numbers of Wretches. Often, the problem isn't insufficient damage, but the inability to deal with approaching enemies in time.

Stalwart

M-105 Stalwart is a relatively reliable choice for clearing Wretches.

Fighting Wretches requires constant repositioning, as players need to keep moving while maintaining their fire output instead of staying in one spot for too long. Stalwart, with its low recoil and good handling, allows players to maintain firepower while retreating and repositioning.

Crushers

Characteristics of Crusher

Among the enemies introduced in Update 7.0.0, Crusher are more like frontal suppression enemies compared to Wretches. They are large, slow-moving, but have a very long attack range, often causing Helldivers 2 players to underestimate their threat distance upon first encounter.

Maintaining a safe distance is crucial when facing Crusher. Even if they don't appear close, their attacks can still cover a considerable area. Entering melee range recklessly can easily render you combat incapacitated with a single mistake.

Therefore, when dealing with Crushers, avoid rushing in to attack. Prioritize using terrain and movement to create distance, then look for safe opportunities to strike. Avoiding close-range engagements significantly reduces the difficulty of the fight.

Optimal Choice

Crusher's biggest weakness is its head, but it's protected by a heavy helmet, making it difficult for ordinary weapons to inflict effective damage. Therefore, prioritizing helmet removal is a more reliable approach when facing this type of enemy.

P-40K Bolt Pistol can be used to weaken Crusher's head armor. After successfully destroying the helmet, Helldivers 2 players can directly attack the exposed weak point, increasing subsequent damage output.

However, this method requires high aiming skills. Crusher's head is a small target, and it constantly moves during combat, requiring players to wait for the right moment to fire.

If you want to reduce the difficulty, 40-K Meltagun is a more stable choice. It's more efficient at breaking head armor and is easier to hit during combat.

Once the helmet is removed, Crusher's threat level drops significantly. Using high-penetration weapons or focusing on weak points will allow you to defeat him more quickly.

Suboptimal Solution

If you don't want to spend time removing the helmet in Helldivers 2 matches, you can try attacking Crusher's legs.

Focusing on the knees or thighs can disrupt his movement. With his legs damaged, Crusher's mobility will decrease significantly, making it easier for players to create distance and maintain sustained damage.

However, this approach requires higher accuracy and sustained damage output. In chaotic combat environments, prioritizing helmet removal remains a more reliable option.

Maintain Damage Output

Crusher has a unique mechanic that requires attention: he can recover some damage taken. Therefore, once you decide to attack Crusher, try to maintain continuous damage output and prioritize defeating him. Otherwise, you'll not only waste ammo but may also need to deal with an enemy with full health again.

Thermite

If you want to quickly eliminate Crusher, G-123 Thermite is a good choice. Thermite poses a significant threat to heavy targets, rapidly reducing Crusher's health upon impact. However, because of the limited number carried, it's better suited for dealing with critical targets rather than being used indiscriminately.

Once you truly familiarize yourself with these enemies in Devoid of Liberty, you'll find they aren't as insurmountable as you initially thought. The most dangerous situation on the battlefield is often not the enemy's strength, but Helldivers 2 players lingering in the wrong positions for too long.

Maintaining movement, choosing the right targets, and focusing resources on worthwhile enemies is the most consistent strategy against Vote Snatchers.

This time, we face not only familiar enemies but also planets permanently altered by Void, out-of-control environments, and increasingly incomprehensible anomalies. Devoid of Liberty no longer merely uses horror as battlefield decoration; it creates a genuine, persistent sense of unease through dark environments, anomalous weather, enemy design, and sound design.

This feeling isn't simply achieved through enemy appearances, but through new biomes, weather, environmental changes, enemy design, and sound design. When you enter Void Source Worlds, you'll clearly feel that it's completely different from the familiar Helldivers 2.

Void Source Worlds

For players who have been battling in Helldivers 2: Galactic Warfare for a long time, the various terrifying enemies - from Terminid to Illuminate, to Voteless and Flesh Mob - are nothing new.

Past battles were certainly filled with corpses, crashed dropships, abandoned cities, and destroyed colonies, but these scenes appeared so frequently that they failed to truly instill fear.

The biggest change in Devoid of Liberty is that it no longer simply uses horror elements as a backdrop for Helldivers 2's battlefields; it begins to truly immerse you in a constantly unsettling environment.

This update introduces the entirely new Void Source Worlds. These planets appear to have been consumed by Void, becoming a vital source for its expansion. The most obvious change is in the environment.

Void Source Worlds are shrouded in darkness for extended periods, with erratic weather, and also feature Temporal Anomalies and Space-Time Fluctuations. You need to destroy Illuminate Spires and Gateways, complete Data Reconnaissance, and infiltrate Illuminate Structures with your squad.

This isn't the relatively stable environment of traditional Helldivers 2 battlefields. You must always be vigilant, because even a brief lapse in concentration can directly alter the entire battle's course. Even Tornado can suddenly appear and sweep a Helldiver into the air.

If you had to find a similar example, it would be the environment on LV-426. LV-426 is a fictional rocky satellite and a crucial backdrop for 1979 Alien and 1986 Aliens universes. This isn't the first time Helldivers 2 has heavily borrowed design elements from Aliens universe.

New Threats

One of the new Helldivers 2 enemies brought by Devoid of Liberty is Wretches. If ordinary Voteless is unsettling enough, then Wretches are like a product utterly distorted by Void. They possess scissor-like deformed limbs, move incredibly fast, and usually appear in groups; encountering five or six at once is not uncommon.

Wretches have a visually striking Dead Space aesthetic. They easily evoke Necromorphs, especially their deformed limbs growing from the human body. This design, using human mutation to create terror, also brings to mind classic sci-fi horror works like The Thing.

However, what truly makes Wretches a threat isn't their difficulty to kill, but their speed at approaching the player. Individually, their vitality isn't overwhelmingly difficult to handle, but once they charge at you in groups, you must quickly create distance while seeking squad support; otherwise, you can easily be surrounded and overwhelmed in a short time.

You can certainly use sufficient firepower to quickly eliminate these enemies, but if Squad is executing a time-limited Helldivers 2 objective, wasting ammunition, time, and potentially attracting more enemy reinforcements for a few Wretches is clearly not worthwhile.

Therefore, if I were to give a practical piece of advice, it would be: don't actively seek out and engage Wretches. If Helldivers 2 mission conditions allow, avoiding them is often more worthwhile than eliminating them. If they've started approaching from multiple directions, maintaining distance, providing cover, and disengaging from combat as quickly as possible is probably wiser.

Even though Wretches are troublesome enough, they may still pale in comparison to the second new enemy introduced in Helldivers 2 Devoid of Liberty. Crushers are about twice the height of Helldiver, but what's truly terrifying isn't their size, but their astonishing survivability.

Even after taking significant damage, Crushers can still regenerate, meaning you can't quickly eliminate them with a burst of damage.

The only saving grace is that Crushers are relatively slow-moving. But don't let their bulky appearance lull you into a false sense of security. Once they start chasing, the actual pressure they exert is far greater than you might imagine. If they close in, their massive clubs will come crashing down.

Visually, Crushers also exude a Silent Hill sense of terror. They aren't clones of Pyramid Head, but they do share noticeable design similarities: massive size, heavy weapons, and a slow but relentlessly encroaching sense of pressure.

The real problem is that one Crusher is dangerous enough, but two or even three appearing simultaneously is a completely different story. The wisest course of action at this point is usually not to engage in a direct confrontation, but to find a retreat route and disengage from the fight as quickly as possible.

If you decide to fight Crushers, the most important thing is to maintain distance while maintaining continuous firepower, and not stop easily to give them a chance to close the gap. Crushers' regeneration means that the longer the fight drags on, the more ammunition and time you'll consume.

Therefore, once you decide to engage, you should concentrate your firepower to erase them. Worse still, Devoid of Liberty doesn't always leave you facing a threat alone. The combination of Crushers and Wretches is what truly makes Helldivers 2 combat tricky.

Wretches will approach at high speed, forcing you to constantly move, while Crushers, with their superior survivability and melee attacks, will continuously shrink your movement space.

Even facing one type of enemy alone isn't too difficult, when both appear simultaneously, your ammo, stamina, and squad coordination will be severely tested. To safely complete the mission, you must be prepared with powerful Helldivers 2 Items.

Sound Design

Besides biomes and enemies, sound design is perhaps the most underestimated aspect of Devoid of Liberty. While previous Helldivers 2 games emphasized intense gunfights, explosions, and battlefield chaos, Devoid of Liberty begins to use sound to create a constant sense of tension.

When players are unsure of what's nearby, sound itself becomes part of the threat. You hear a noise but can't immediately pinpoint the enemy's location; you know danger might be nearby but don't know when it will appear.

This is a technique frequently used in survival horror. Devoid of Liberty doesn't completely transform Helldivers 2 into Resident Evil or Silent Hill, but it makes players feel, for the first time, clearly that they aren't the all-powerful super-soldier in a galactic war, but perhaps just a Helldiver struggling to survive in an unknown environment.

The approach of Helldivers 2 Devoid of Liberty seems different from its predecessors; the dark Devoid of Liberty delivers a completely different combat experience. As Void continues to expand, this may only be the beginning of a larger-scale horror story in Helldivers 2.
