Once upon a time, getting into a vehicle in Helldivers 2 was tantamount to courting disaster. Whether it was the lightly armored jeep, easily destroyed by a minor bump, or the heavily armed but easily exploded mechs, the vehicle system long suffered from a reputation for being aesthetically pleasing but ultimately frustrating to use.
But in Into the Unjust: 6.0.1, the developers finally delivered a satisfying solution: TD-220 Bastion MK XV, affectionately known as Bastion Tank, officially joined the battlefield. Choosing a vehicle is no longer a high-risk, low-reward strategic decision in the game.
Overview
TD-220 Bastion MK XVI is a heavily armored tank destroyer designed for frontal firepower suppression and area control. Equipped with a 120mm high-velocity cannon and a heavy coaxial machine gun, its firepower directly rivals the heavy-hitting capabilities of Super Destroyer.
It can accommodate four Helldivers: one driver, one main gunner, and two secondary gunners. This means that a high degree of teamwork is essential to fully utilize this behemoth.
To give you a clearer picture of its firepower, Bastion Tank's 120mm high-velocity cannon uses the same ammunition as the 120mm missiles launched by Super Destroyer. This means that in most combat scenarios, a single hit from the main gun can instantly destroy any ordinary enemy, as well as most buildings and defensive systems.
In terms of ammunition reserves, Bastion Tank also differs significantly from previous vehicles. The main gun comes with over 20 rounds of ammunition, with a maximum actual capacity of 30 rounds; the heavy coaxial machine gun has an ammunition capacity of up to 2,000 rounds. This gives it a sustained combat capability far exceeding that of light vehicles like jeeps.
In short, TD-220 Bastion MK XVI's individual destructive power far surpasses that of any other strategic unit currently in the game.
How to obtain it?
To unlock Bastion Tank, you need to go to Ship Management console in Super Destroyer, find TD-220 Bastion Mk XVI in Strategic Units list, and spend 35,000 Helldivers 2 Requisition Slips to complete the exchange.
It's currently unclear whether unlocking requires a level requirement, but it's predicted to require at least level 25, similar to mechs in the game. This design makes sense, given Bastion Tank's firepower and impact far exceed the tactical complexity needed for beginners.
Furthermore, this is a universal strategic unit; any player with sufficient resources can unlock it and add it to their Stratagems slot. It will gradually become a staple choice for high-difficulty missions in the late game.
Usage Tips
While TD-220 Bastion MK XVI boasts terrifying frontal firepower, effectively utilizing it is far more difficult than you might imagine.
First, there's strategic skill cooldown. After each summoning of Bastion Tank, the strategic skill cooldown exceeds 12 minutes.
This means that in a standard mission, you can deploy a maximum of three tanks. This necessitates careful planning for each deployment to avoid wasting valuable strategic resources because of operational errors or recklessness.
Secondly, Bastion Tank requires at least two players to operate efficiently. One driver is responsible for maneuvering and positioning, while the other, the gunner, is responsible for firepower.
The driving method for this tank is essentially the same as M-102 Fast Reconnaissance Vehicle, still using a combination of throttle, steering, and clutch operation. However, because of its larger size, the margin for error is lower.
The main gunner's challenge lies in the limited firing arc of the gun. 120mm main gun cannot rotate around X-axis and can only fire within a cone-shaped area directly in front of the tank.
Once a target appears on the flank or rear, the driver must quickly adjust the vehicle's orientation to create a firing angle for the gunner. Therefore, the optimal strategy is for the gunner to direct the driver's steering and positioning adjustments.
The secondary gunner is responsible for observing other areas, especially the rear and flanks, eliminating weaker infantry attempting to approach, issuing danger alerts, and clearing mines and other obstacles to clear a path.
Bastion Tank's main gun uses a manual loading mechanism. After each shot, the loading button must be pressed to begin the next reload, a process that takes several seconds.
During the reloading interval, the main gunner can switch to the heavy coaxial machine gun for suppressive fire. However, it's important to note that ammunition for both weapons is a limited resource; indiscriminately unleashing fire can easily lead to a passive situation later in the game.
Mobility and Survivability Analysis
In terms of mobility, Bastion Tank is not outstanding. Its turning radius is extremely large, almost equivalent to a four-lane highway, and its speed and response time are noticeably slow. Complex terrain is its biggest enemy; it is prone to slipping or bouncing on slopes and frequently gets stuck on rocks and terrain edges.
Therefore, the driver must remain cautious and avoid recklessly charging into enemy lines or complex terrain. Bastion Tank is better suited for steady advancement and area control than rapid assaults.
However, in terms of survivability, it finally shows players what a heavy vehicle should look like. The hull can effectively withstand ordinary laser attacks and volleys of automated missiles.
After the 6.0.1 update, the developers also lowered the damage over time threshold for some attacks, improving the overall durability of all vehicles, a change that is particularly beneficial to Bastion Tank.
In extreme situations, Bastion Tank's massive hull itself is a weapon. It can directly crush large numbers of infantry units, especially in confined terrain, quickly clearing out low-threat enemies and buying the team breathing room.
Furthermore, the developers have designed a relatively humane escape mechanism. When the tank is about to be destroyed, all crew members are automatically ejected, preserving the player's chance of survival.
It must be admitted that the developers have finally done something that benefits all players. Vehicles are enormous investments, occupying one of only four equipment slots, slots that could otherwise be used to equip personal nukes or reliable turrets.
Vehicles, with their slow deployment speed and long cooldown times, require high levels of teamwork to reach their full potential, whether light vehicles like jeeps or heavy vehicles like Bastion Tank. Under these circumstances, they should rightfully possess the power to change the course of battle.
Bastion Tank is currently the closest answer to this design goal.
So, if you've already accumulated enough Requisition Slips, it's time to convert those resources into real-world steel tanks and join the armored assault team marching towards Cyberstan!
