Is RestedXP Allowed in WoW Forever? What Players Should Know

RestedXP's WoW Forever addon is free, but its full leveling guides cost $30–$45. See what Blizzard's addon policy says, whether you can use Questie alongside it, and the best free alternatives.

Author: Oliver Hayes Views: 23 Published: Nov 06, 2026 Modified: Nov 06, 2026

RestedXP is one of the leveling addons many World of Warcraft: Forever players encounter early in their journey. The basic addon is free, its in-game guide system is convenient, and its paid routes promise a more organized way to reach higher levels. The problem is that Blizzard's addon policy says developers cannot charge for addons or services related to them.

So where does RestedXP fit?

The short answer is that players can download and use the addon, and there is no verified public Blizzard ruling establishing that ordinary RestedXP users will be banned for doing so. The more complicated question is whether selling route content designed to work inside a free addon crosses Blizzard's monetization rules.

That distinction matters. The policy debate is about how the product is sold, not simply whether a player has the addon installed.

For anyone considering a purchase, there is another reason to look closely before checking out: RestedXP is not the only way to get guided leveling in Forever. Free options such as Polestar and Guidelime cover much of what players need, while Questie can provide useful quest information alongside a separate route guide.

How Much Does RestedXP Cost in WoW Forever?

RestedXP separates its addon from the commercial guide content. The addon is free to download, and the included Forever starter routes let players try the system during the early levels. The full faction routes are sold separately.

The official store currently lists these prices:

Forever guide Official listed price
Alliance $30
Horde $30
Both factions $45

These are one-time listed prices, not monthly subscription fees. RestedXP says its Forever guides will receive updates as the game and its routes develop.

There is an important detail in the product roadmap, though. RestedXP lists its Speedrun Guide as completed and its Dungeon Leveling Guide as the active development stage. Forever-specific routes for levels 35–60 are listed as coming after launch, with existing Era guides available as an interim option. Its Discovery and Legacy guide experiences are also planned for later.

That means players should check the current coverage before buying, especially if they expect a complete Forever-specific route from level 1 to 60. A guide that is still being expanded should be judged on what is available now, not only on what appears on its roadmap.

Does RestedXP Violate Blizzard's Addon Rules?

Blizzard's World of Warcraft User Interface Add-On Development Policy is clear about the basic restrictions.

Rule 1 says addons must be distributed free of charge. Developers cannot create premium versions with paid features, charge for addon downloads, charge for services related to an addon, or require monetary compensation to download or access one.

Rule 4 says addons may not be used to advertise goods or services. Rule 5 also prohibits donation requests inside addons, although developers can put donation information on their addon websites or distribution pages.

The difficult part is applying Rule 1 to RestedXP's particular setup.

The addon itself is free. The company sells route data separately, and that data is designed to be used through the addon. Critics argue that the paid routes are effectively a premium part of the in-game addon experience. From their perspective, separating the software from the content does not change what the customer is paying to access.

The counterargument is that the guide data is a separate product. Players can write their own routes, use community-created guides, or follow leveling instructions outside the game. Under that interpretation, RestedXP is selling guide content rather than charging for the addon itself.

Blizzard's published policy does not specifically explain how separately sold route files should be classified when they are imported into free addon software. The phrase "services related to the add-on" is broad, but the policy does not provide a RestedXP-specific example or a public determination about this business model.

That is why calling the arrangement a confirmed violation—or claiming Blizzard has officially approved it—would be premature.

The policy itself is available on Blizzard's official UI Add-On Development Policy page.

Can You Get Banned for Using RestedXP?

There is no verified public Blizzard announcement in the sources reviewed for this article saying that players will be banned simply for installing or using RestedXP in WoW Forever.

It is worth separating the developer's business model from the player's use of the software. Blizzard's addon policy sets requirements for addon development and distribution. A dispute over whether a developer may sell related guide content does not automatically establish that ordinary users are committing a punishable offense by loading the addon.

That said, nobody outside Blizzard can promise that an addon will be exempt from every future policy decision. The absence of a public enforcement announcement is not a guarantee of permanent approval.

For players deciding whether to use the free addon, there is currently no verified public basis for treating RestedXP itself as a confirmed ban trigger. The unresolved issue is the monetization model behind its paid guides.

RestedXP and Questie Do Different Jobs

One reason addon comparisons become confusing is that players often treat RestedXP and Questie as direct competitors. They overlap, but they are not designed to answer the same question.

RestedXP is primarily a route guide. It gives players an ordered sequence of steps and helps them follow a planned leveling path.

Questie is primarily a quest tracker. It helps locate quest givers and objectives on the map and minimap, but it does not independently provide the same kind of complete, optimized route.

That difference also means you do not necessarily have to choose one or the other.

Players can run RestedXP and Questie together if they want RestedXP's route instructions while keeping Questie's additional quest information. RestedXP lists Questie as an optional companion. One practical precaution is to avoid having both addons automatically accept or turn in quests at the same time; keep that function enabled in only one addon to reduce duplicate actions.

There is another limitation worth knowing: Questie's Forever quest data is still being updated. Some newer Forever quests or NPC interactions may not have complete markers yet. If a quest is missing from the map, that does not necessarily mean the quest itself is unavailable.

For players who want a route and a map helper together, this combination can be more useful than expecting Questie alone to replace a full leveling guide.

The Best Free Alternatives to RestedXP

You do not need to buy RestedXP to follow a structured leveling path in Forever. The best alternative depends on whether you want a complete route, quest markers, or community-written instructions.

Polestar: A Free, Forever-Focused Guide

Polestar is the most direct free alternative for players who want an integrated leveling guide rather than a basic quest tracker.

Its official site describes 254 built-in guides, including leveling routes for every race's starting area before characters join their faction route toward level 60. The library also includes class quests, professions, reputations, exploration, mounts, and companion pets.

The addon includes an in-game navigation arrow and step-by-step guide instructions. It is free and open-source under the GPL-3.0 license. Its CurseForge page lists a Forever release, with version 0.3.2 published on November 5, 2026.

Polestar is still a developing community project, so players should check its release notes and current compatibility information before installing updates. But for someone who wants a substantial guide library without paying for commercial routes, it is a serious option.

Guidelime: Community Routes Instead of a Paid Guide

Guidelime is a guide-display addon. Its usefulness depends on the route packs installed alongside it; the addon itself is not a complete leveling route.

For Forever players, community-created packs such as TUGs provide step-by-step leveling instructions. The available coverage and compatibility can vary by pack, so check the pack's release date and supported faction before relying on it for a new character.

This setup is a good fit for players who want a guided route but would rather use community content than purchase a commercial guide.

Questie: Best for Players Who Prefer Their Own Route

Questie is useful if you do not want an addon deciding every step of your journey. It provides quest locations and objective information, letting you choose which quests to complete and where to go next.

Its Forever data is not perfect yet, particularly for newer game-specific quests. Still, it is a useful free companion for players who know the zones or prefer to explore at their own pace.

Addon What it does best Best for
RestedXP Structured leveling and dungeon routes Players who want a guided, optimized path
Polestar Free, integrated Forever guide library Players who want a full guide without paying
Guidelime Displays community-created routes Players who prefer community-written instructions
Questie Quest locations and objective tracking Players who want to choose their own route

The important difference is that Questie is a tracker, Guidelime is a guide framework, and Polestar and RestedXP provide more complete integrated guide experiences. Comparing them only by whether they have an arrow or quest markers misses what each tool is actually designed to do.

Does Faster Leveling Help You Make More Gold?

A faster leveling route can help players reach professions, dungeon farming, and higher-level gathering opportunities sooner. That can matter in a new economy, especially for players interested in early Auction House activity or getting a head start on crafting.

But leveling faster does not automatically make a character richer.

A route built around efficiency may skip optional mobs and side quests that would otherwise provide vendor trash, extra rewards, and opportunities to gather materials. Players still need money for class training, equipment upgrades, bags, and mount-related expenses.

If you are following a fast route, keep enough gold available for essential abilities and upgrades instead of spending everything along the way. Players planning their currency needs can also look into resources such as WoW Forever Gold, but buying a leveling guide is not a requirement for progressing through the game.

A good route saves time. Good gold management keeps that time savings from turning into a shortage of money when your character needs training or equipment.

Should You Buy RestedXP or Use a Free Addon?

For most players, trying the free content first is the sensible choice.

RestedXP is worth considering if you like its interface, want a structured route, and expect to level multiple characters. Its commercial guides may also appeal to players who value carefully sequenced quests and dungeon planning more than exploration.

If you mainly want quest locations, Questie is enough for many situations. If you want a free route system built specifically for Forever, start with Polestar. Guidelime is another option if you find a community guide pack that matches your faction and leveling goals.

The policy controversy is a separate matter. Blizzard clearly prohibits paid addons and charges for addon-related services, but its public policy does not specifically settle the status of separately sold route data used through free addon software.

Until Blizzard addresses that distinction, neither "RestedXP is officially approved" nor "RestedXP has been confirmed to violate the rules" is a claim players should treat as established fact.

You can use the free tools, compare their route coverage, and decide whether RestedXP's paid guides save enough time to justify the price. There is no reason to spend $30–$45 before you know what kind of leveling assistance you actually want.
