On January 27th, ARC Raiders officially released a major update 1.13.0 to the game, introducing the high-risk, high-reward Headwinds mode.
This Headwinds update includes features and content such as Solo vs. Squads Matchmaking, Bird City Map Condition, New Epic Augments, Trophy Display Project, and Cosmetics.
However, based on current community discussions, the update and its enhanced features are not well-received, with overall player interest remaining low. New Epic Augments and Trophy Display Project updates, in particular, have sparked significant dissatisfaction among players.
To understand the reasons behind this phenomenon, this guide will collect and analyze player opinions on New Epic Augments and Trophy Display Project. Below, I will guide you through examining whether the controversies surrounding this event are justified.
Trophy Display Project
The introduction of the temporary Trophy Display project is a major trigger for the wave of criticism from players.
The reason is that ARC Raiders created five permanent, phased missions with different themes for this project. In each mission, players need to change their strategy when facing ARC robots, shifting from passive defense and dodging damage to actively attacking and hunting them to obtain loot rewards.
However, even if you participate in the hunt, the ordinary loot obtained won't meet the mission requirements set by HeadWinds. Only by collecting the rare parts required for the mission and placing them in the display case can you obtain substantial rewards. Therefore, you may need to engage in combat with players who have obtained these rare parts to seize their resources.
So this frantic hunting behavior already shows that it somewhat contradicts the game's adventure and extraction theme.
Furthermore, in these five missions, starting from the second phase, one of the rewards will include a Vita Shot Blueprint; the third mission will reward you with a Shotgun Silencer Blueprint; the fourth phase will reward you with a Bobcat Blueprint; and even in the fifth phase, you will receive a Snap Hook Blueprint.
Obtaining Blueprints has been extremely difficult for veteran players. Due to their low spawn rate, players often had to risk venturing into high-value loot areas and expending considerable effort to scavenge containers just to barely acquire one.
The current update makes them easily obtainable for every player simply by completing quests. This not only reduces the rarity of ARC Raiders Blueprints but also renders the hard-earned rewards of previous adventures worthless.
Further worrying for players is the announcement that Trophy Display Project currently has no definite end date, and these item rewards will not be affected when reset in Expedition Project.
This news is unfair to some players for two reasons: first, for players who like to reset Raiders, the reset process requires completely clearing stash items, blueprints, etc., to obtain permanent rewards.
Secondly, experienced players will complete the five phased missions far more efficiently than new players because new players lack the game's understanding and skill level. Therefore, if experienced players don't reset the game, new players will be completely outmatched when scavenging and looting, leading to repeated mission failures.
This is the reason for the heated debate among players, and hopefully the developers can resolve this confusion as soon as possible.
New Epic Augments
ARC Raiders has added enhancements to Tactical Mk.3 and Looting Mk.3 in this update.
Here, I mainly want to emphasize the enhancements to Tactical Mk.3, as many players in the community have reacted strongly to them, considering it the worst Augment.
While it added a Defibrillator to Augment slots in Tactical Mk.3, Defibrillator is inexpensive to craft and easy for players to acquire. Furthermore, its 4-minute cooldown after use could be reduced to 2 minutes, allowing resurrected players to get up faster and recover more health. The ideal is appealing, but the reality is harsh, leading many players to consider this design useless.
Other Issues
Besides the controversies surrounding the two main sections mentioned above, there are other aspects that have angered and raised questions among players.
For example, some players have noticed a significantly lower drop rate for loot after Headwinds update, suggesting a nerf to loot availability. Also, there's a lack of appropriate pop-up notifications informing players that Solo vs. Squads Matchmaking is only available to players level 40 and above.
In Electromagnetic Storm, the official statement indicates that the number of container types that can be used to obtain blueprints will decrease during an electromagnetic storm, which undoubtedly encourages players to steal resources from other players.
Therefore, scavenging containers or other items while exploring the map presents numerous dangers. This high-risk, low-reward gameplay has led to widespread complaints and criticism from players.
While Headwinds update has been controversial and met with constant criticism, we cannot entirely dismiss it as a poor design.
For example, the introduction of Anti-Cheat system has been welcomed by many players. The official ban period for cheaters has been increased from 30 days to 60 days, demonstrating the official crackdown on cheating.
Open Parties feature introduced in Patch 1.13.0 is also quite interesting. You can set your party to be open, allowing your in-game friends to join at any time. If you're already in the game, they can wait for you in the lobby until you finish your game before starting the next one with you. There's nothing more enjoyable than embarking on an adventure with friends.
Finally, I want to say that the updated HeadWinds game pace feels faster, more tense, and more exciting for a casual player like me. However, this doesn't actually excite me; it just makes me feel a bit pressured.
Before, in a 30-minute game, I just wanted to collect loot and survive until a successful extraction. Now, I need to protect my loot from being stolen. I wonder if other players like me can quickly adapt to this new gameplay mode.
