Strike Zone Conflict

The core of this theory stems from the changes to Strike Zone. MLB The Show 26 previously adjusted the strike zone, allowing pitches where part of the ball touches the edge to be called a strike, making it closer to ABS system's judgment method.

The problem is that after Strike Zone adjustment, Hitting System's judgment of in-zone and out-of-zone positions may not have changed synchronously.

If MLB 26 still handles in-zone swings and chases separately, then the most likely location to expose the problem is naturally the edge of the strike zone.

According to the current judgment, a ball that grazes the edge is already a strike and therefore cannot be left unpunished; however, within the batting system, this position may still fall outside the zone as defined by the old model.

To cover such pitches, PCI needs to move to the edge or even outside of the strike zone, and this swing might then be identified as a chase by the system.

As a result, a pitch that is technically a strike could be affected by the batting mechanism similar to chasing a bad ball. Even if the contact is close to the center and the timing is not obviously wrong, the final result may still be a smaller PCI or a lower Exit Velo.

However, an important counterexample is that pitches outside the zone do not consistently produce a low Exit Velo. For example, a slider outside the strike zone can still produce an exit velocity of 106 MPH, and a changeup below the strike zone can still produce a home run of nearly 450 feet.

If the system uses the simple logic of "reducing the exit velocity whenever there's a challenge," these results are difficult to explain. Therefore, the ball being outside the zone may not be sufficient to determine the final initial velocity.

Therefore, attributing all recent low EV and PCI shrinkage to Strike Zone Theory may be an oversimplification.

Until these hitting mechanics are better understood, lineup construction remains one of the few factors players can directly control.

Spending MLB 26 stubs carefully on cards that better suit their current hitting approach may therefore be more practical than reacting to every unusual Exit Velo result.

Under identical timing, PCI placement, and contact quality, is there a systematic difference in the final result between a ball in the center of the zone and a ball grazing the edge of the current Strike Zone? If this difference can be consistently reproduced, then the strike zone theory truly has evidence to continue pursuing.

Weekend Classic of MLB The Show 26 Diamond Dynasty, which began on August 28th, has recently seen a very obvious pitching trend: the use of circle changes is increasing significantly, and it's especially difficult to handle on Legend difficulty. In a single Weekend Classic game, opponents might throw 84 out of 100 pitches as circle changes.

The main problem is that the actual intensity of circle changes clearly exceeds their normal placement in regular pitch mixes, making them very difficult to deal with.

If the pitcher starts reducing fastballs or uses circle changes consecutively, the overall hitting rhythm will be significantly slowed down.

More importantly, in MLB 26 Weekend Classic, even if the batter anticipates the opponent might continue throwing circle changes, it doesn't mean the pitch is easy to handle. This is what makes it unique: reading the pitch doesn't necessarily translate to a corresponding advantage.

Normally, the pitcher changes their attack method using different pitches like fastballs, sliders, changeups, and curveballs, while the batter judges the next pitch based on the pitcher's motion, pitch speed, and trajectory. Theoretically, if the same pitch is used consecutively, the batter should be able to gain a greater hitting advantage through anticipation.

However, circle changes currently create continuous timing pressure at MLB 26 Legend level. Even if the batter prepares for a slowball in advance, they might still encounter timing problems due to hitting too early; if they choose to wait, they might miss fastballs or other suitable pitches to hit. This reduces the strategic flexibility that Pitch Mix should offer.

This disparity is particularly pronounced in Weekend Classic games. Against pitchers who frequently use circle changes, games easily devolve into offense and defense revolving around slow-pitch timing. The consistently high usage rate of a particular pitch in MLB The Show 26 ultimately affects not only the strength of that card but also the strategic gameplay inherent in the entire mode.

Pitcher

The dominance of circle changes directly affects current pitcher selection. In the challenging environments of MLB The Show 26 Weekend Classic and Ranked modes, pitchers with excellent breaking balls, consistent control, and the ability to consistently influence batter timing are more valuable.

Jonathan Broxton's fastball can reach a maximum of 103 MPH, disrupting batting rhythm with extremely high speed, but he is not a must-have pitcher in the current MLB 26 meta. 

CC and Trevor Hoffman have recently gained more attention, leading to a greater demand for MLB 26 stubs, largely because of their ability to constantly alter the hitting rhythm with breaking balls.

The significant speed difference between a fastball and a circle change is particularly important. Fastballs create pressure for quick reactions, while circle changes force batters to extend their waiting time; the combination of both makes timing judgment much more difficult.

How to Counter?

In MLB The Show 26, facing a circle change isn't simply about improving reaction speed, but readjusting your timing. Even if you know your opponent likes to throw circle changes, don't prepare for every pitch as a slowball.

Because once a fixed anticipation is established, your opponent can easily create a greater timing difference by changing their pitching rhythm using MLB 26 fastballs or other pitches.

Besides the pitch type, pitching position is also crucial. If circle changes frequently land deep in the strike zone, prioritize PCI contact quality rather than striving for a perfect-perfect.

Especially after two hits, it's crucial not to over-pitch just because you've missed a few slow balls. Otherwise, you'll easily lose your hitting rhythm while waiting for the next breaking ball.

The most common problem with circle changes is impatience. After several missed pitches, players often instinctively swing prematurely, only to be further outpaced by slower balls. Maintaining a consistent hitting rhythm is more important than simply guessing what the next ball will be.

If your opponent has been using circle changes extensively, you can narrow your anticipation range, focusing your attention on their most frequently used pitching area while preserving space to react to fastballs.

The goal isn't to completely predict the next ball, but to reduce the impact of circle changes while avoiding losing your ability to handle other pitches in MLB 26 because of over-anticipation.

The current Weekend Classic has proven that pitchers who can control the batter's timing in MLB The Show 26 are gaining increasing competitive value. From a broader perspective, the circle change trend in Weekend Classic is also worth noting for MLB The Show 26 development team.

If a pitch type can maintain extremely high usage for an extended period and continue to generate significant timing pressure even when identified early, then the issue is no longer simply that a particular pitcher or card is too strong; rather, it indicates a shift in the balance of the pitch mix itself.
