Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0 Temple Exploit Flooded the Market With Divine Orbs Before Emergency Nerf

Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0 introduced emergency nerfs to Temple of Atzoatl Snake Layout exploit after players generated massive amounts of Divine Orbs. This guide explains the exploit, its impact on the in-game economy, and the latest changes from GGG.

Jun 08, 2026 Author: EZG

Following the official launch of Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.0, players' need for basic resources has driven them to persistently study the game's mechanics. Which types of gameplay, character builds, and systems can help players earn more currency?

Recently, a super-powerful money-making mechanism has been hotly debated in the player community: some players have farmed massive amounts of core currency, such as Divine Orbs, in just a few hours using Temple of Atzoatl.

This method quickly spread among players. Some were excited about the large harvest, while others worried that this would eventually cause an economic crisis in the game, rendering even Divine Orbs worthless and making leveling up as easy as drinking water.

These concerns are not unfounded. Whether to extend the player's time in PoE2: Return of the Ancients or to maintain the game's existing economic system, the developers have taken action.

Developer Grinding Gear Games released emergency nerfs, directly cutting the doubled output of Temples. This swift response, unusually, received unanimous praise from players.

Why is this? Let's explore this sensational mechanism together: what exactly is it, and why are players so welcoming of this nerf so soon after release?Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0 Nerfs Temple of Atzoatl Exploit: Massive Divine Orb Farming Stopped

Unlimited Currency Farming - Snake Layout Exploit

In earlier versions, Temple of Atzoatl mechanic received major improvements. Nevertheless, after the release of Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.0 and later updates, some top players and teams have deciphered how it works.

Originally, Temple of Atzoatl's gameplay resembled a card-building game. Players could combine rooms with different functions. Each time a temple was fully completed, the system would randomly destabilize some rooms, forcing players to find Blocks to repair and reassemble them.

However, recently, these top players discovered that the temple's destabilization logic wasn't random; it prioritized deletions from the ends or specific paths.

Through extremely rigorous logical calculations, players connect dozens or even hundreds of rooms within a massive 9x9 grid, creating an incredibly long Snake Layout.

The Principle Behind Earning Currency

This strategy maximizes the reward mechanism of Temple of Atzoatl. By placing the highest-reward rooms (such as T3 Currency Room, Architect's Study, or Shrine of Empowerment) at the very front of Snake Layout.

Combined with Locking Medallions from PoE2 or the locking function of specific NPCs (such as Spymaster), players can ensure that only the less valuable rooms at the tail end of the snake are ever destabilized by the system.

Normally, players only receive the rewards from one round of rooms, but Snake Layout forcibly connects dozens or even hundreds of high-value reward rooms into an extremely long, one-way dead end - Snake Route.

In this situation, Quantity and Rarity upon entering the temple are infinitely stacked, meaning a normal player might only obtain one or two Divine Orbs over several hours.

However, in a fully fledged Snake Layout, due to the mechanism's infinite stacking without cost, top players could acquire over 100 Path of Exile 2 Divine Orbs within an hour.

Inflation

Because of Snake Layout, a massive influx of Divine Orbs flooded the in-game trading market, driving the prices of all endgame Unique Items and top-tier crafted affixes to hundreds or even thousands of Divine Orbs.

Meanwhile, casual players and regular players who diligently farmed for gold found their savings worthless, unable to afford any equipment.

A few players and currency farming studios who mastered this technique amassed immense wealth in just a few days, causing server-wide inflation. Ordinary players were completely deprived of getting power, which is why GGG decided to implement a significant nerf shortly after the release of PoE2 patch 0.5.0.

Emergency Measures

Following numerous player feedback and complaints, GGG immediately launched an investigation. Once the official team verified that the situation was both authentic and time-sensitive, they announced an emergency fix via social media.

1. Forced Room Deletion

The latest fix directly implemented a forced mechanism in Temple of Atzoatl's underlying code: all Restricted Rooms accessible to players (such as T3 and T4 bonus rooms) will be forcibly deleted upon player exit.

This completely eliminates the perpetual cycle of players endlessly farming currency using specific layouts.

2. Restricted Medallion Usage

Path of Exile 2 update stipulates that all Medallions targeting specific rooms are now strictly prohibited from use within active event temples.

Furthermore, the drop rate of Temple of Atzoatl Medallions is no longer calculated solely based on bonuses from other rooms, but is now forcibly linked to and scaled against the total number of paths within the temple.

This rendered the previously intentionally designed one-way dead-end temples unable to produce enough Medallions to sustain operation.

3. Reducing High-End Yields

To narrow the wealth gap caused by Snake Layout, GGG adopted a strategy of reducing high-end yields and compensating for low-end yields.

  • Nerf High End: Reduced the cap on Quantity and Rarity gained through Snake Layout, completely removing the previous ability to mindlessly generate massive amounts of Divine Orbs.
  • Compensating Low-End Yields: As compensation, the official team increased the number of base rooms in the initial temple generation, allowing ordinary players to collect the required Temple of Atzoatl faster. Simultaneously, players were allowed to upgrade ordinary rooms to the new T4 level after unlocking Atlas Passive Tree.

Reaction

This emergency nerf was praised by major media outlets as "successfully preventing the biggest economic disaster in PoE2 history," and received widespread praise from the player community.

Its core significance can be understood from four perspectives:

  • Saving the market economy: hard work pays off.
  • Upholding the core game philosophy: high risk, high reward, not speculation.
  • Zero tolerance for economic disruptors.
  • Opening a Meta-Flourishing Era for Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.1.

Yes, you read that right. Patch 0.5.1 will significantly expand Atlas Passive Tree, provide free skill points, introduce a new Lineage Support Gem, new Elemental Passive Skills, and strengthen the reward mechanisms for all Caster classes and Ritual/Breach.

This allows players to rediscover diverse map strategies, leading to a true flourishing of gameplay.

In conclusion, it is clear that Path of Exile 2 pays close attention to the health and sustainable development of the game, and also values the genuine feedback and requests from players, which is exactly what a good game should do.
