WARDOGS Beginner Guide: How Do You Actually Play, Make Cash, and Survive Your First Match?

During WARDOGS Early Access phase, getting familiar with helicopter controls can be a useful skill. Since many players have not unlocked equipment such as Stingers and RPGs yet, using a helicopter for transportation is relatively safe. It's also a fairly easy way to earn cash.

You can start by practicing how to fly a helicopter, transporting teammates from the spawn point to Hot Zone or Control Zone, then bringing them back from the battlefield.

EZG will start with Settings and cover the basic helicopter controls in Wardogs, including how to control altitude and land safely without flipping the helicopter or hitting obstacles.

Settings

Mouse

WARDOGS currently does not have a separate Vehicle Sensitivity slider, so Mouse Sensitivity also affects the helicopter. A basic mouse sensitivity setting of 0.55 with a mouse DPI of 1,600 is recommended.

For Vehicle section, Free Look Sensitivities can stay at 100, while Air Vehicle Multiplier can stay at 1. If the helicopter feels too slow, you can increase this value slightly. If the movement feels too fast or too floaty, lower it.

Rotary vehicle mouse control is also important. When enabled, moving the mouse left and right controls roll, while moving it up and down controls pitch. If you prefer, you can also use Rifle Aim, which makes the mouse control Yaw horizontally and Pitch vertically.

Helicopter Mouse Pitch and Roll Sensitivity are recommended at 50%, while Helicopter Mouse Axis Isolation can stay at 0%. With Invert Y Axis enabled in Wardogs, helicopter controls feel more like a joystick. Pushing the mouse forward gives you Pitch Down, while pulling it back gives you Pitch Up.

Flight Assists

WARDOGS Flight Assists are beginner-friendly. Stability Assist reduces changes in pitch, roll, and yaw, making the helicopter more stable. Turning it off gives you more freedom with manual controls, but you also have to handle more of the control yourself.

Envelope limits restrict extreme pitch, yaw, and collective inputs, keeping the helicopter within a safer flight range. When you are just learning, it is better to keep these assists enabled. Once you become familiar with the basic flight controls in Wardogs, you can gradually turn them off and practice full manual control.

Key Bindings

In Rotary Vehicle Key Binds, Collective Raise and Collective Lower can be set to W/S. Yaw Left/Yaw Right can be assigned to A/D. Some less frequently used Helicopter controls can be bound to keys such as F6, F7, F8, and F9, which are less likely to interfere with other major Wardogs controls.

Cyclic Y can be assigned according to your personal preference. If you often perform barrel rolls, you can put it on the spacebar. If you do not need it, assign it to another key that is rarely used in Wardogs. Activate Counter Measure can be set to X, making it easy to press quickly during flight.

Flight Indicators

The flight indicators at the bottom of WARDOGS screen are also worth understanding. The vertical line mainly shows pitch, helping you judge the current attitude of the helicopter, while the thinner horizontal line shows roll.

The arrows on both sides represent changes in altitude. When the helicopter tilts forward, the arrows will point noticeably downward if it is rapidly losing altitude. 

When you pull the helicopter back, the altitude increases quickly and the arrows point upward. These indicators may be difficult to understand at first, but after a few flights, their meaning will become much clearer.

Takeoff

After getting a helicopter from the vendor in Wardogs, open the menu and select Start Engine, or simply press W to start the engine. The engine takes a little time to start, so do not rush to take off before the helicopter reaches full rotor speed.

Once it is ready, hold W to climb, while S makes the helicopter descend. The mouse controls Roll horizontally and Pitch vertically, while A/D controls Yaw. Flying a WARDOGS Helicopter relies heavily on momentum.

If you need to gain altitude quickly, pull the helicopter backward. This will sacrifice some speed, but the altitude will increase rapidly. Once you reach the required altitude, bring the helicopter back to a level position.

If you want to lose altitude, hold S while pushing the helicopter forward. This also allows you to use the rotor to increase forward speed. When you are first practicing, do not rush. Spend some time flying in the air and getting familiar with momentum. Once you understand how it feels, controlling Wardogs Helicopter becomes much easier.

Flight Tips

Low-altitude flight is very important in actual Wardogs matches. Once the enemy has RPGs, Stingers, or other anti-air equipment, flying at high altitude can easily expose your position.

WARDOGS has an Under Radar mechanic. When the helicopter flies close enough to the terrain, enemies cannot lock onto it. The exact altitude takes some practice to learn, so you can start by testing this mechanic in the test range.

Wardogs Helicopter relies heavily on Roll. When rolling right, you can combine it with right yaw to change direction quickly. With a large roll, you can even make a turn approaching 180° very quickly.

Compared with more arcade-style flight games, Wardogs requires you to become more familiar with roll. If you have played Arma before, these helicopter controls may feel easier to understand.

If you are just starting to fly a helicopter in actual matches, crashing into trees, buildings, or even flipping over is completely normal. You can use Wardogs cash to get a Spanner in advance, allowing you to repair the Helicopter quickly after it takes damage. 

If the helicopter flips over, you can use Reposition Helicopter in F Menu to try to recover it, then repair the rotor afterward.

The riverbed in WARDOGS Test Range is a good place to practice helicopter flight. You can follow the riverbed, gradually lower your altitude, and then try flying underneath bridges to get familiar with pitch, roll, and yaw at low altitude. 

Even if you crash, it does not matter. Press Escape, select Return to Spawn, spawn another helicopter, and continue practicing.

Landing

Once you enter a Wardogs Control Zone, landing can easily become one of the most troublesome parts. When you are around 1,000 meters from your destination, you can start reducing speed and adjusting your altitude. Hold S while slightly pulling the helicopter backward to quickly bleed off horizontal momentum.

After finding a landing zone, gently tap S to adjust your altitude and slowly descend. When landing a helicopter in WARDOGS, carrying some forward momentum into the landing usually does not cause major problems, as the direction of the landing gear helps keep the helicopter stable.

However, landing sideways can easily cause the helicopter to flip. Helicopter crashes are common around spawn points, especially when heading toward a Wardogs Control Zone. If you fail to correct roll and yaw during the descent, the rotor can also hit nearby buildings or trees.

If the helicopter keeps swaying from side to side while descending, do not rush the landing. Take a few extra seconds to adjust roll, then use yaw to correct the direction and keep the helicopter facing forward as much as possible when it touches down.

Helicopters don't always need to land completely on the ground. If you hover at a low altitude close to the ground, passengers can still safely exit and complete the transport to earn WARDOGS Cash. In areas with difficult terrain, there's no need to force a full landing just to pull off a perfect landing.

For players just getting started with WARDOGS Helicopter, flying fast should not be the first goal. Being able to take off steadily, control your speed, fly close to the terrain, and safely transport teammates to their destination are the most important skills for a reliable helicopter pilot. After enough practice, you will find that controlling the helicopter is not as difficult as it first seems.

WARDOGS battlefield is contested by three main factions, each with its own lore and visual identity. When new players first encounter the faction system, a common question arises: does choosing a specific faction directly impact weapons, vehicles, or even a character's combat capabilities?

In the current Early Access build, faction-based restrictions on combat styles are not as rigid as one might expect. WARDOGS emphasizes player agency - allowing you to get gear, allocate funds, and determine your battlefield role - while the faction choice primarily dictates which side you represent in the conflict.

Before deciding which faction suits you best, it is important to distinguish between faction lore and actual gameplay mechanics.

Faction System

WARDOGS supports up to 100 players in core combat, with Lonestar, Valkyra, and Manticore vying for control of zones on the map. The faction that maintains a numerical advantage in a target zone steadily accumulates points, and the first to meet the victory conditions wins the match.

However, these three factions do not correspond to a traditional class system. The game utilizes player-defined roles; players use WARDOGS cash to get firearms, equipment, and specialized tools, deciding which mission to undertake for that specific life.

Some players might charge into a control zone with a rifle for direct combat, while others choose to heal downed teammates, transport players in vehicles, or invest in specialized gear.

Character roles shift based on loadouts and battlefield needs rather than being locked in by the faction you join.

Therefore, while Lonestar, Valkyra, and Manticore differ clearly in lore and identity, any gameplay differences should be viewed with nuance, making their individual faction identities the better place to start.

Lonestar

Lonestar is portrayed as the heavy hitter of Western paramilitary world and is the faction that most closely resembles modern Western paramilitary organizations.

Its overall design evokes images of private military contractors (PMCs), modern mercenaries, and professional armed forces.

If you appreciate PMCs, modern Western military gear, and a straightforward paramilitary aesthetic, Lonestar is a faction that offers a highly immersive experience. However, heavy-hitters are currently best viewed as part of a faction's overall image.

This label does not automatically equate to higher damage, stronger armor, or a guaranteed advantage in heavy firepower; Lonestar players must still determine their specific roles based on their equipment, WARDOGS cash, and the demands of the battlefield.

Valkyra

Valkyra's faction identity is directly linked to Soviet People's Republic, with the goal of restoring that regime to its former status.

This background imbues Valkyra with distinct Soviet-style political and military imagery, creating a sharp contrast to Lonestar's Western paramilitary aesthetic.

Players who appreciate Soviet military hardware and Eastern European military aesthetics - or who prefer a faction with a strong political identity - will probably find Valkyra appealing.

However, the lore does not automatically restrict loadouts. Under current Early Access rules, there is no requirement for Valkyra players to limit themselves to specific types of firearms or vehicles simply because of the faction's Soviet roots.

Manticore

Manticore is linked to Kingdom of Persia and is described as Tehran's shadow army.

Compared to Lonestar and Valkyra, Manticore's identity is more enigmatic. This setup evokes the image of an armed force operating outside conventional military structures, giving the faction a highly distinctive profile among the three in WARDOGS.

If you are interested in Persian themes, covert military forces, or unique faction concepts, Manticore may hold more appeal than the other two options.

However, the shadow army description is primarily a narrative element. It does not directly translate to stealth mechanics, nor is there any indication that Manticore players receive inherent bonuses for stealth, reconnaissance, movement speed, or other forms of concealment.

Faction Differences

When comparing the three factions, the differences are actually simpler than the names might suggest.

• Lonestar represents Western paramilitary forces;
• Valkyra centers on the resurgence of Soviet People's Republic;
• Manticore belongs to Kingdom of Persia and operates as Tehran's shadow army.

The most distinct differences lie in their backgrounds, faction imagery, and the specific powers they represent on the battlefield.

The situation changes once combat begins, however; within the game, character roles are determined by the players themselves. Decisions such as which weapons to get, how to allocate WARDOGS cash, whether to deploy vehicles, and whether to carry medical or other specialized gear have a more direct impact on actual gameplay than the faction name itself.

Currently, there is insufficient evidence to suggest that Lonestar, Valkyra, and Manticore possess entirely distinct arsenals, vehicle pools, or fixed combat bonuses.

Even if certain weapons or cosmetics feature distinct faction branding, this does not necessarily imply that the equipment is exclusive to a specific faction.

Consequently, it is difficult to establish a definitive meta tier list based on faction strength. Battlefield performance is largely determined by loadouts, resource allocation, the location of objective zones, vehicle deployment, and team coordination.

A player who utilizes inexpensive gear but consistently holds control zones, heals teammates, or handles transport can easily contribute more than a player who spends heavily on expensive weaponry yet fails to participate in objective contention.

As Early Access progresses, the development team may well expand upon faction-specific content. Should faction-specific equipment, missions, or other distinct mechanics be introduced in the future, the gameplay differences between the three factions could widen.

However, in the current Early Access build, there is no clear best choice among Lonestar, Valkyra, and Manticore. Join the faction whose military aesthetic and lore appeal to you most. For WARDOGS right now, your choice of faction defines who you fight for rather than how you fight.

In the long history of gaming, especially in recent years, the quality of anti-cheat measures has become one of the key factors determining whether a competitive FPS can maintain a healthy player base. Games such as PUBG and ARC Raiders have both demonstrated how quickly cheating-related concerns can affect the community's perception of a shooter.

And now, a new tactical FPS is attracting attention. WARDOGS began early access on September 10, 2026, exclusively for PC players via Steam. While it attracted a huge number of players immediately after launch, the first few days were plagued by technical problems and criticism from the community.

The situation is particularly interesting because WARDOGS is not a free-to-play shooter. The base game costs $39.99, while the optional Supporter Pack costs another $12.99, with Supporter Edition priced at $49.99. In FPS of this value, anti-cheat systems should be very sophisticated, but in Wardogs, the opposite is true.

Negative Reviews of WARDOGS Anti-Cheat

WARDOGS' Steam page currently identifies Elytra as its kernel-level anti-cheat solution. This sounds reassuring on paper, since kernel-level anti-cheat systems can operate with a much deeper level of system access than traditional user-level solutions.

However, a powerful anti-cheat system is not necessarily a successful anti-cheat system. For players, the real test is whether it can stop cheaters without creating serious problems for legitimate users. This is where WARDOGS has encountered criticism.

Elytra Anti-Cheating Affects Normal Game Operation

Before Wardogs entered Early Access, players had already reported problems associated with Elytra during the game's beta period. Some players reported that the anti-cheat could prevent the game from launching, while others claimed that starting the game could result in system crashes. Community reports included cases in which players reinstalled or repaired the anti-cheat but continued to experience launch problems.

More seriously, some users reported hard crashes and even blue-screen-like behavior when Elytra kernel driver was loaded. These reports should be treated as community experiences rather than proof that Elytra causes every crash, but they reveal an important problem: an anti-cheat system cannot be considered successful if legitimate players are struggling to launch the game because of it.

There were also discussions suggesting that certain BIOS or virtualization settings could affect Elytra's behavior. However, these workarounds were community discoveries rather than universal solutions officially guaranteed.

For a competitive FPS, this creates an uncomfortable situation. Players install an anti-cheat system to protect their matches, but if that system itself interferes with normal game operation, some users may begin questioning whether the protection is worth the inconvenience.

Easily Banned by Malicious Means

Another concern comes from the opposite direction: false positives and the possibility of legitimate players being punished. Kernel-level anti-cheat systems are powerful precisely because they can inspect processes and system-level behavior that traditional anti-cheat solutions cannot easily access.

However, greater access also means that developers need to be extremely careful when determining what constitutes cheating. This caution itself is not a big problem, but WARDOGS handed over the decision-making power entirely to AI in their misguided cleverness, which greatly increased the possibility of some regular players being maliciously banned.

These players who experience an unexplained ban have little interest in how sophisticated the underlying technology is, instead whether the system can accurately distinguish between a genuine cheater and someone running legitimate software in the background. This is particularly important for WARDOGS because the game is designed around a persistent cash economy.

If a legitimate player who has invested a significant amount of time is mistakenly banned by AI, all the time and effort they've put into this game will be wasted, such as Wardogs cash, gear, and achievements accumulated from each match. What's even more frustrating for players is that the current appeal process is completely ineffective.

Just a Formality

The biggest problem with Elytra is that, at least according to player reports, its presence has not stopped obvious cheating from appearing in WARDOGS matches.

Some players have reported an especially frustrating experience: within a single day, they encountered multiple players using exactly the same ID while allegedly cheating in matches. What makes the situation even more concerning is that these players did not appear to receive immediate bans or other meaningful penalties.

Instead, they were reportedly able to continue playing and carrying out in-game activities as usual. If multiple players displaying the same suspicious identity can repeatedly appear in matches while seemingly facing no consequences, it naturally raises questions about how effectively Elytra is detecting and responding to cheating.

This is particularly damaging to the credibility of a system advertised as kernel-level anti-cheat. In this case, the player experience paints a disappointing picture. Even when suspicious players are repeatedly encountered, the lack of visible enforcement can make reporting feel pointless. Worse still, if these players can continue playing without interruption, they may have little reason to stop.

Instead of discouraging cheating, an ineffective enforcement system can potentially encourage repeat offenders to become even more aggressive. For a costly paid FPS like WARDOGS, this is especially unacceptable. Players are not simply looking for an anti-cheat system to be listed on the Steam page; they expect it to protect the integrity of their matches.

Elytra may be technically sophisticated, but if cheaters can repeatedly enter matches, remain active after being reported, and apparently avoid meaningful punishment, then the anti-cheat risks becoming little more than a formality.

Until Wardogs can demonstrate that suspicious accounts are detected and removed quickly and consistently, players will have every reason to question whether Elytra is actually doing its job.

What Should WARDOGS Do?

Based on the three main negative reviews mentioned above, Wardogs' self-proclaimed extremely strict anti-cheat measures are seen as an obstacle by players, causing many FPS players to leave disappointed. So, what should the game do to change its public image in the shortest possible time?

Stability

An anti-cheat system should protect the game without becoming an obstacle for legitimate players. If Elytra continues to generate launch failures, crashes, or compatibility problems, BULKHEAD needs to prioritize fixing those issues and communicate clearly about what has changed.

Improve Reporting and Appeal Systems

Players need to know what happens after they submit a report. They should not necessarily receive detailed information about detection methods, because revealing too much could help cheat developers bypass the system. However, providing clearer information about the status of reports, penalties, and appeals would help build trust.

Continuous Detection

Since Wardogs already achieved a remarkably large launch, with reports of more than 300,000 concurrent players during its first day and a peak later reported at over 340,000, it is likely to attract more cheating players. 

A larger player base means more attention from both legitimate players and people looking for ways to exploit the game. Elytra therefore cannot simply be installed once and left alone. It needs continuous updates, better behavioral detection, and rapid responses to newly discovered exploits.

By the way, WARDOGS should make better use of its community server system. Active community administrators can provide another layer of moderation that automated anti-cheat systems cannot completely replace. Combining automated detection with human review can provide a more robust overall defense.

What's WARDOGS Future?

While players are now much less tolerant of early access games - for example, technical glitches and server issues in new games are understandable; but in FPS games, anti-cheat system malfunctions are absolutely non-negotiable, as they will determine the outcome of FPS competitive matches.

Therefore, when players in Wardogs Early Access experience game crashes, unjustified bans, and repeated encounters with suspected cheaters that they cannot successfully report, their primary feeling is undoubtedly disappointment, which is the main reason why players have now given up on the game.

However, we shouldn't dismiss it outright. Instead, we should observe the situation rationally: if the developers heed advice, resolve the existing problems one by one, and improve their anti-cheating system, you can still experience the fun of a relatively fair shooting competition.

Ultimately, WARDOGS' future will not be determined by its launch-day problems alone. It will depend on how quickly and seriously the developers respond to them.

Scouting and Marking

This is the simplest and easiest way to earn money in WARDOGS, especially suitable for novice players. All you need is a basic telescope, which unlocks without any level upgrades.

Then find a favorable position with a wide field of view overlooking the enemy's activity area. Right-click to aim, hover the cursor over the enemy, and hold down the marking tool until the red rectangle is complete. This will mark the target on your team's map.

Marking targets will grant initial rewards, but the real benefits come from assist rewards. If a teammate kills an enemy you've marked, you'll receive a substantial reward, typically hundreds of cash per kill.

While advanced equipment like monoculars, rangefinders, and infrared rangefinders can improve your marking distance and accuracy, basic binoculars are sufficient to start farming cash.

Reviving and Healing as a Medic

Medic is the most consistently profitable role in Wardogs. Reviving a downed teammate earns you 800 cash, and bandaging an injured teammate earns you 400 cash, meaning a single revive and heal can yield 1,200 cash - equivalent to the standard kill reward in a hot zone.

While a Defibrillator costs 1,600 cash, in intense firefights, you can earn far more than that. Resuscitators speed up player respawns, making you more efficient in dangerous situations; some players will even bribe you for priority respawns.

Driving Spawn Vehicle

Ground vehicles offer a slower but more reliable logistical option. Drivers earn rewards by transporting teammates to controlled areas and supplying items to FOB. This is especially useful when enemy anti-aircraft fire is suppressing helicopters.

Early-game deliveries alone earn 3,000 cash, and each teammate who respawns in the vehicle earns an additional 250 cash. This passive income continues as long as the vehicle exists, making it one of the most stable sources of income in the game.

Be mindful to keep your personal combat gear inexpensive while driving, as the vehicle itself is your primary investment. Basic armor, light weapons, bandages, repair tools, and spare ammo are sufficient for most situations.

A Fuel Can extends the range of long-haul deliveries, while Repair Stations and Refuel Stations at FOB allow the vehicle to remain operational without returning to base.

The main limitation is that the vehicle can only be driven by one person, so you might find it difficult to secure the driver's seat, especially if your teammates know how lucrative this role is.

Flying Helicopters

If you can fly a helicopter in WARDOGS, you can earn a significant amount of WARDOGS cash without firing a shot. Pilot transport helicopters to deliver teammates to the safe zone. You'll earn rewards for each player you drop, and additional rewards if they survive and eliminate enemies.

However, it should be noted that if a player jumps without a parachute and dies on the ground, you will be penalized, or if a passenger is killed immediately after being dropped, you will also be penalized.

If you don't have enough passengers, you can fill the empty slots with logistical supplies and airdrop them to the forward operating base. Using high-capacity helicopters like UH-1Y, you can earn up to 4,800 cash per mission just from airdrops.

Staying in Hot Zone

This is the simplest way to passively earn income in WARDOGS. Go to Hot Zone and stay there. No action is required; as long as you survive, you'll receive a steady stream of cash.

It's worth noting that activities within Hot Zone (including combat, rescues, transport missions, and other team actions) yield double cash rewards. If you want to earn more money, consider participating in more activities here. However, this is contingent on ensuring your own safety; death will undo all your progress.

Building Defenses as an Engineer

Engineers with Small Hammers can build sandbags and Hesco barriers at friendly Forward Operating Bases.

Each swing of the hammer to build cover earns 50 cash. While this may not seem like much, if you reinforce your FOB near Hot Zone, where construction activity is frequent, the cumulative effect can be substantial.

Furthermore, the passive income from building shelters is even more significant. You also receive a percentage of the cash when teammates use your constructed structures (turrets, mortars, or anti-air positions) to kill enemies. 

Engineers focused on building can earn approximately 150,000 cash per match, while also upgrading their support units.

Destroying Enemy Structures

You earn cash rewards when you destroy enemy-deployed ammo crates, FOB consoles, and mines. This method not only weakens the enemy's logistics and defenses but also yields considerable cash rewards - a win-win situation.
