WoW Forever Guide: Major Changes to Realms, Legacy System, Classes, Professions and Gear

WoW Forever reshapes Classic with realmless servers, Legacy progression, revamped professions, new class options, slower tactical combat, and broader gear choices throughout the level 1 - 60 journey.

Sep 18, 2026 Author: EZG

World of Warcraft: Forever officially launches on November 4, with the beta having started on September 17.

This long-term iteration continues to focus on the level 1 - 60 Azeroth experience, retaining Classic's slower leveling and combat pacing, distinct class identities, and open-world exploration while significantly overhauling servers, character progression, professions, gear, and class systems.

Blizzard's subsequent Deep Dive has clarified how these changes play out in practice.

WoW Forever Guide: Major Changes to Realms, Legacy System, Classes, Professions and Gear

Realmless

Forever eliminates the traditional realm selection process. When creating a character, players simply choose a ruleset - Normal, PvP, Roleplaying, or the later-opening Hardcore - with each ruleset forming a large-scale, independent player ecosystem.

Players on the same ruleset can form groups and enter dungeons and raids together; Alliance and Horde factions remain separated, and players across different rulesets cannot group up. Hardcore mode features an independent Legacy progression and collection system, though characters that die can be transferred to other rulesets.

This reduces the long-term risks associated with server selection at launch. Issues like population decline, friends choosing a different realm, or long queues on high-population servers - which previously might have forced players to reroll - are mitigated; Forever shifts the focus of the choice toward gameplay rules.

Legacy System

Players in Forever earn Legacy Points by leveling different classes, reaching profession milestones, and completing other Legacy Challenges. These points are shared among characters on standard rulesets, allowing each character to allocate them independently based on their specific needs.

The initial Legacy Trees include Adventure, Professions, and Resourcefulness. These allow players to boost Rested XP gain and storage caps, increase yields from Mining, Herbalism, and Skinning, and even reduce reagent requirements for certain class abilities.

At launch, players can collect up to 65 Legacy Points, but only 16 can be assigned to a character's Legacy Trees, with the remaining progression feeding into Legacy Reward Track.

Consequently, playing alts becomes an integral part of long-term account progression. Leveling an additional class not only offers a fresh leveling experience but also expands the pool of Legacy Points available to the entire account.

For players maintaining several characters, this may also make early planning around professions, materials, and WoW Forever gold more important than before.

Open-World Social

Camping feature expands the basic campfire into a multiplayer-compatible campsite. In Forever, players can stop in the open world to rest, repair gear, and use profession-related workstations; they can also gain one-hour buffs from objects placed by other players.

A basic campsite can accommodate up to three special profession objects, with each player contributing only one.

Professions such as Blacksmithing, Tailoring, and Herbalism offer various objects that provide campsite buffs or utility; these effects fall into the same category as corresponding class buffs and do not stack with them.

This design restores tangible benefits to stopping in the open world. Campsites encountered while traveling or questing can naturally evolve into brief resupply points, creating more opportunities for interaction between strangers.

Professions Matter

Camping feature ties into Forever's profession overhaul. Blizzard has confirmed the addition of over 600 new recipes spanning various skills and level ranges, with some high-level blueprints dropping from specific dungeon bosses.

Crafted food will provide both stat boosts and a small amount of bonus XP, making Cooking more relevant during the standard leveling process.

Overall, professions will play a role in character progression much earlier; low-level gathering, crafting, and campsite objects can directly affect leveling efficiency, rather than only becoming valuable after reaching level 60.

This could also give crafting materials and WoW gold greater importance throughout the leveling process, especially for players developing multiple professions at once.

Unsolving Gear

The gear system in Forever is undergoing even more significant changes. Blizzard uses the term unsolving to describe their goal for itemization, hoping to reintroduce variables into the gear-optimization paths that have been solved for years in Classic.

Spell, Melee, and Ranged Hit ratings will be merged into a unified Hit stat, with Critical Strike handled similarly; Weapon Skill remains, though the values provided by individual pieces of gear are being reduced.

Bonus Healing will also provide Bonus Damage equal to one-third of its value; caster weapons will grant Spell Damage and Healing starting at lower levels, and hybrid builds will gain access to more specialized gear.

Trinkets and certain other items will feature special effects tailored to specific enemy types or environments - such as woodlands, mountains, and deserts. Dungeon loot, quest rewards, and world drops are also being adjusted to offer a wider range of viable choices for different builds and scenarios.

As players experiment with more gear combinations, Forever gold may also become useful for covering profession costs, consumables, and other character upgrades along the way.

Players will still seek out BiS gear, but arriving at a single, definitive answer may take longer than in traditional Classic.

Combat

Forever retains the slower combat pacing characteristic of Classic. According to official Forever guidelines, the estimated time to kill a standard enemy is 10 - 15 seconds, and dungeon encounters involving tank enemies are not designed around the expectation of crowd-controlling an entire room at once.

Crowd control abilities - such as Polymorph, Banish, Fear, and Root - remain effective; DPS players must still be mindful of threat and target priority, and AoE strategies rely on pulling manageable, safe group sizes.

The slower pace of gameplay remains, though adjustments to abilities, threat mechanics, and gear allow a wider range of class compositions to function smoothly within this rhythm.

WoW Forever Classes

Classes

Forever adjusts classes, racial abilities, and talent trees while preserving the distinct utility differences between classes. The launch introduces six new race-class combinations: Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, and Undead Paladin.

Talent trees retain the familiar structure of Classic. However, certain key class buffs that previously required talent points - such as Divine Spirit, Blessing of Kings, and Improved Mark of the Wild - are now baseline abilities, freeing up talent points for enhancing gameplay mechanics and utility.

These changes enable more specializations to viably fill roles in dungeons and raids, while still maintaining inherent class weaknesses. Paladin's continued lack of a standard interrupt or slow ability is a prime example of this design philosophy.

Taken together, the announced systems indicate that the changes in WoW Forever span the entire leveling journey from 1 to 60.

For players already well-versed in Vanilla leveling routes, class mechanics, and BiS lists, the most significant shift in Forever may well be the need to re-examine and re-learn these familiar processes.
