How Shaman Has Changed in WoW Forever? Elemental, Enhancement and Restoration

Shaman has received major changes in WoW Forever, with new abilities, redesigned talent effects, and different gameplay for all three specializations. Discover how Elemental, Enhancement, and Restoration have evolved.

Author: Oliver Hayes Views: 14 Published: Nov 07, 2026 Modified: Nov 07, 2026

The changes to Shaman in WoW Classic+ are better than expected. Its gameplay moves away from the more complicated button-heavy rotations, returning to a core design philosophy centered on spellcasting, totem management, and the flexibility of hybrid abilities.

Then, stormstrike is no longer just a high-cooldown melee ability. It now deals 150% normalized weapon damage and has a shorter 6-second cooldown, making it a much more important part of Enhancement Shaman's damage rotation.

This article takes a closer look at the changes to all three Shaman specializations in WoW Forever, helping you understand their new mechanics, strengths, and playstyles.

Elemental Shaman

In WoW Forever, Lava Burst has been completely removed and replaced by Call of Thunder, which increases the critical strike chance of Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning by 5%.

This change reinforces the original identity of Elemental Shaman as a caster who overwhelms enemies with consistent Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning damage, rather than relying on Flame Shock and Lava Burst combinations.

Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning have also received shorter base cast times, while Lightning Overload has become considerably more reliable. Its proc chance now scales from 10% to 30% depending on talent rank, allowing it to cast a duplicate of the triggering spell that deals half damage without generating additional threat.

The result is a smoother damage rotation with more opportunities for additional spell damage.

Another interesting addition is Earthbound, a new Elemental talent that causes Earthbind Totem to instantly root nearby targets for 5 seconds when cast. This gives Elemental Shamans a useful defensive and crowd-control option without relying entirely on burst damage.

Enhancement Shaman

Enhancement Shaman received some of the most substantial and interesting changes in WoW Classic+. One of the biggest problems with Enhancement in Classic was that, despite being a melee specialization, its spell damage did not scale particularly well with the stats commonly found on melee gear.

WoW Classic Plus addresses this through Mental Dexterity and Mental Quickness.

Mental Dexterity increases Attack Power by up to 150% of Intellect at maximum rank, while Mental Quickness increases spell damage and healing by up to 30% of Intellect.

This makes Intellect much more valuable for Enhancement Shamans, as it now contributes directly to both melee and spell damage. Players may therefore need to spend more WoW Classic Plus gold to upgrade their gear and take full advantage of these new stat conversions.

Maelstrom Weapon is another major highlight. When a melee attack deals damage, it has a chance to generate stacks that reduce the cast time and Mana cost of your next Lightning Bolt. Each stack provides an additional reduction, up to 20% at five stacks.

This creates a much more engaging gameplay loop: build Maelstrom stacks through melee attacks, then weave faster and cheaper Lightning Bolts into your rotation. It combines physical and magical damage in a way that Classic Enhancement previously struggled to achieve.

Stormstrike has also received meaningful improvements. It now deals 150% normalized weapon damage, up from 100%, while its cooldown has been reduced from 8 to 6 seconds.

Improved Stormstrike further rewards active gameplay. Casting spells has a chance to activate increased Mana regeneration for 15 seconds, while dodging or parrying an attack can reset Stormstrike's cooldown.

Together, these changes make Enhancement more flexible, improve its Mana sustainability, and give players more reasons to combine melee attacks with spellcasting.

Restoration Shaman

The removal of Riptide's initial instant healing has attracted criticism from players who feel that it reduces the specialization's ability to respond quickly to emergencies. Riptide now focuses on healing over time and increasing the effectiveness of Chain Heal cast on the affected targets. Its cooldown has also increased from 6 to 12 seconds, although its Mana cost has been reduced by approximately 40%.

However, this change may make sense in the long run. Restoration Shaman has always relied heavily on efficient healing spells, Mana management, and intelligent totem usage rather than simply chaining instant-cast abilities.

WoW Classic Plus reinforces this approach by keeping Healing Wave as an important single-target healing option and giving Riptide and Chain Heal a clearer relationship. Riptide provides sustained healing and prepares its target for more effective Chain Heal casts.

Meanwhile, Water Shield remains an important Mana management tool. Its water globes can restore 2% of maximum Mana when Shaman is hit by an attack or when one of their healing spells critically strikes. This gives Restoration Shamans another way to maintain their Mana throughout longer encounters.

In addition, Mindfulness allows up to 50% of Spirit-based Mana regeneration to continue while casting. This directly addresses one of the biggest challenges faced by Classic healers without introducing unnecessary complexity into their rotations.

Overall, Restoration Shaman now places greater emphasis on anticipating incoming damage, managing Mana, and positioning effectively rather than constantly switching between short-cooldown healing abilities.

I believe the changes to Shaman in WoW Classic Plus are better than many players initially expected. The developers have not simply kept the class within the limitations of the original Classic design. Elemental has lost Lava Burst, Restoration has lost Riptide's initial instant heal, and Enhancement has gained new Intellect-based stat conversions that fundamentally change its gearing priorities.

Of course, not everyone will welcome these changes. Players who particularly enjoyed the original abilities and rotations may understandably feel that some of the class's familiar identity has been lost.

However, looking at the overall consistency of the mechanics and the direction of the redesign, I think official has made some meaningful improvements. Each specialization now has a clearer gameplay identity, and the combination of spellcasting, melee combat, healing, and totem management makes Shaman a more interesting class to play in WoW Forever.
