Today, I'll be talking about a topic that's been causing a lot of debate among WoW Midnight players, mainly concerning the in-game Transmog system.
This controversy mainly focuses on Transmog function in the game, and it is about the color of equipment - some players believe that some very classic Tier 2 sets are being remade again and again, just changing the color each time, and giving them to players as new rewards.
Below, I will explain this, help you understand the ins and outs of this matter, and provide my opinion.
Too Much Recolor
WoW launched a series of very famous equipment in the early days-Tier 2 sets. In this series, each profession has its own exclusive look, such as Paladin's Judgment suit and Rogue's Bloodfang suit. These suits were the favorites of old players back then and were also a status symbol.
At the end of 2024, the publisher carried out a "high-definition remake" of those classic T2 suits, based on retaining the original shape, the model accuracy and texture quality were improved to the current level.
Everyone's reaction at the time was: "Great! This is full of sincerity and sentiment!" After all, everyone is happy to use the high-definition version of the "magic costume" from back then.
However, not long after that, the publisher announced: We are going to release Recolor versions of these T2 sets.
The so-called Recolor means that the model is exactly the same, only RGB values are changed - red becomes blue, gold becomes green, and so on. This in itself is not a new thing, it has been in the game for a long time, and everyone is already used to it.
Players believe that the first batch of Recolor versions are good. Although they are a bit unexpected (they think they were released too fast), they still accept them.
Then, things started to get outrageous. After WoW Midnight Patch 12.0.5 went online, the publisher launched a Void-themed T2 suit - the original golden suit was dyed purple. This is the third color version of T2 set.
However, things are not over yet. According to data mining by a WoW player, T2 set will have a fourth color (possibly green or blue) and a fifth color to appear in the future. These subsequent colors will most likely require players to obtain them through Trading Post.
Too Expensive Outfit Slots
Of course, frequently changing the color of the same suit is not enough to make players dissatisfied. The problem is that if this matter is combined with the mechanics of Transmog system, it will make people want to complain.
In WoW Midnight, the way Transmog plays is: you need to unlock Outfit Slots in specific locations. After unlocking, you can add a Transmog to the slot, and no matter what equipment you change, your Transmog will be displayed in that slot.
For example, if you set the helmet position to display A appearance, then no matter how many helmets you change, it will automatically display A appearance.
Gold is required to unlock Outfit Slots. Although the first two slots are free, starting from the third slot, more and more Gold is required to unlock an Outfit Slots.
Moreover, this is only Gold consumed to unlock Outfit Slots. If you want to actually use a set of Transmog appearance, you have to spend additional Gold in other places; if you have multiple Alts, you have to unlock these Outfit Slots for each Alts separately, because the account does not share this.
Before this feature was officially launched, Outfit Slots consumed too much Gold, which triggered vehement protests from the player community, forcing the publisher to urgently cut the price in half. However it still requires too much Gold.
Do you remember the recurring Tier 2 color variation sets I mentioned earlier? Players have to spend a lot of gold to unlock costume slots. All they expect is to use that gold to make their characters look cool.
But what are Transmogs in WoW Midnight? A large number of identical sets, just changed colors, are used by publishers as new sets. As a result, some players felt that their Gold and efforts were wasted, which led to this controversy.
My Opinion
The launch of Recolor version of the set in WoW Midnight is not a problem in itself, but when T2 set has come out in so many colors, and each color has to be obtained through different channels, things become sour.
Players will feel: "I spent dozens of hours playing games to earn Gold, but in the end I just got a purple version of an equipment I already had?" This feeling is not a "reward,", but a "perfunctory" one.
I think that if publishers really want to make a good Transmog system, they should balance the two directions:
First, the limited Recolor version: for a classic look like T2 suit, 2-3 colors are enough. If there are too many colors, it will inevitably be suspected of laziness.
Second, the amount of Gold required to open Outfit Slots has been reduced again, allowing players to freely enjoy Transmog function.
