Following the next weekly reset on May 12th, WoW Midnight Season 1 will introduce extensive adjustments for tank specializations. In the official patch notes for WoW Midnight, a brief introductory statement outlines the developers' objectives behind these enhancements.
The adjustments aim to achieve two primary goals: First, to increase passive damage reduction capabilities, thereby lowering the incoming damage taken by tank specs that are currently underperforming in high-level Mythic+ content. Second, to improve the uptime and effectiveness of specific cooldown abilities, helping weaker specs better withstand dangerous periods of high burst damage.
Notably, every adjustment in this update constitutes a buff; there are absolutely no nerfs. Among these changes, three specific tank builds are particularly worth investing in.
Blood Death Knight Tank
For Blood Death Knight, most of the enhancements in WoW Midnight Patch 12.0.5 focus on RNG-based mechanics.
Dancing Rune Weapon
First up is Dancing Rune Weapon: its Parry Chance has been increased from the original 20% to 25%. This essentially serves as an RNG-based form of damage reduction.
Furthermore, this change also results in a tangible damage increase, as Dancing Rune Weapon itself acts as a cooldown ability designed for burst DPS. Consequently, extending the duration of this ability and increasing the frequency of its triggered effects naturally leads to higher overall damage output.
Compared to Deathbringer build, this buff provides a significantly greater boost to San'layn build. San'layn playstyle relies on cycling Dancing Rune Weapon to stack and maintain Essence of Blood Queen charges in order to deal damage.
Dance of Midnight
Similarly, the duration of Dance of Midnight proc effect has been extended to 8 seconds, and its trigger chance has also been increased. Once triggered, the effect lasts longer, resulting in more substantial damage reduction. This change is accompanied by an increase in the character's Stamina attribute; additionally, the healing provided by Death Strike has received a modest buff - an improvement that is undoubtedly welcome news for everyone.
While the inherent uncertainty of RNG-based buffs might not feel entirely comfortable for tank players, gaining enhanced defensive capabilities while simultaneously picking up a bit of extra damage is undoubtedly a delightful bonus. These adjustments are highly likely to make the gameplay experience for Blood Death Knights in Mythic+ feel much smoother and more fluid. I believe the vast majority of Blood Death Knight players should be quite satisfied with this outcome.
Vengeance Demon Hunter Tank
Stamina Bonus
Regarding Vengeance Demon Hunter, the official WoW Midnight team has also implemented several adjustments to their passive abilities. The most significant change is that Stamina bonus provided by Demonic Wards has been increased from the original 8% to 12%; additionally, their base Stamina has received a further 5% increase.
Mastery
The benefits derived from Mastery have been enhanced. This improvement to Mastery primarily manifests as a slight increase in the character's Armor value. I consider this to be a relatively minor buff, as for Vengeance Demon Hunter, Mastery is - in the vast majority of situations - not a core stat they would actively prioritize stacking or pursuing.
Overall, their Mastery values rarely reach top levels. Consequently, this enhancement to Mastery benefits will not result in any substantial impact.
Void Reaver
Furthermore, Void Reaver talent has received an adjustment: Frailty effect now causes the target to deal 5% less damage to you. If you are utilizing the standard Frailty build, this damage reduction effect effectively doubles, increasing from the original 8% to 10%. Against many damage, you can now expect to gain a consistent damage reduction of just under 6%.
Undoubtedly, while the adjustment is modest, it constitutes a genuine and tangible buff. Vengeance Demon Hunter will notice a distinct improvement in their survivability within WoW Midnight.
Protection Paladin Tank
Among this series of tank adjustments, Protection Paladin is undoubtedly the biggest winner - and the specialization most worthy of your investment of WoW Midnight Gold. The development team's objective this time was to bolster Protection Paladin's baseline survivability: this was achieved, on one hand, by enhancing passive effects, and on the other, by adjusting the cooldown coverage and potency of defensive abilities to address survivability concerns during periods when active cooldowns are engaged.
Blessing of Dust
First, let's examine some changes made to passive abilities. The damage reduction cap for the passive ability Blessing of Dust has been raised from the original 10% to 20%. The specific amount of damage reduction applied will depend on your current health level; the lower your health, the more pronounced the damage reduction effect becomes. Combined with the additional 5% passive Stamina bonus provided by Sanctified Plates, your survivability will be further solidified.
Ardent Defender
The changes to active abilities are particularly impressive. First, the duration of Ardent Defender has been extended by 50%, increasing from the original 8 seconds to 12 seconds. Concurrently, the damage reduction effect it provides has also been boosted from 20% to 30%. Thanks to this wave of buffs, the ability's uptime will increase significantly, allowing you to tangibly experience a substantial enhancement in your survivability during actual combat.
Protection Paladins in WoW Midnight Season 1 have historically suffered from slight shortcomings regarding defensive coverage. These recent changes can, in a sense, be viewed as a return to form. Although Ardent Defender no longer possesses the extremely high Cooldown Reduction effects it did in the past, by directly extending its duration, you now gain an Ardent Defender that lasts longer and delivers a more potent effect.
Sentinel
It is worth noting that all the aforementioned changes will also synergize with the reversion made to Sentinel. Previously, Sentinel had undergone a nerf that reduced its duration from 20 seconds to 16 seconds; now, however, its duration has been restored to its former level.
This change in WoW Midnight is highly significant because it implies that while you may no longer refresh the ability via cooldown reduction mechanics, you can now directly extend its duration each time it is activated. Consequently, although it appears to add a mere 4 seconds to the duration, the actual benefit extends far beyond those 4 seconds. Building upon the baseline duration, your Sentinel ability will effectively gain 8 seconds - or even more - of additional uptime.
In specific scenarios involving burst cooldowns, such as when activating Bloodlust, you can cast abilities like Hammer of Wrath more frequently, thereby allowing you to extend the duration of this effect indefinitely. Clearly, this change effectively eliminates the disadvantages the ability previously faced regarding coverage uptime.
Protection Paladin is poised to become far more competitive on Mythic+ stage - potentially seeing a pick rate significantly higher than current levels - given that their utility for the group is simply off the charts! The power of Bubble (Divine Shield) goes without saying; furthermore, in WoW Midnight Season 1, Freedom-style abilities have also become exceptionally potent.
Furthermore, these changes have granted Paladin a passive damage reduction capability, further bolstering their survivability. Protection Paladin players should be extremely pleased with these adjustments.
WoW Midnight tank players had originally hoped to see a rework of Apex Talents in the upcoming season; however, a large-scale overhaul of that magnitude is simply not feasible before the next season begins. Consequently, serving as a transitional form of compensation, I believe the current set of changes is actually quite solid.
