The first phase of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade has been live long enough that you should have a good understanding of leveling, dungeon progression, and raid balancing. What do you think of the game? Has it met your expectations?
So far, the overall player experience has been positive. While some players feel the game will soon become too reliant on raids, most players remain focused on character gear, leveling alts, upgrading materials, and preparing for the next phase.
This guide will provide a comprehensive analysis of the current state of WoW TBC Classic and the progress of Phase 1, so you can stay up-to-date with the latest developments.
Smooth Launch
While WoW TBC Classic experienced technical issues, server congestion, and instability at launch, it is undeniably one of the smoothest Classic servers the developers have ever released.
During the initial opening of Dark Portal, the servers experienced brief instability. For approximately one to one and a half hours, severe latency made it nearly impossible for many players attempting to enter Outland to play normally. Fortunately, the developers didn't hold back this time, responding quickly to the issue and restoring server stability shortly afterward.
The subsequent gameplay was incredibly smooth; you could play the game, complete quests, level up, and so on as usual. The number of server layers was also perfect, effectively balancing player density. Everyone could complete quests smoothly without excessive competition for monsters or resources.
If you're a gatherer, such as a miner or herbalist, you'll find the resource nodes very well distributed, allowing you to level up your professions alongside your character without feeling constantly frustrated.
Overall, the game's launch experience was highly praised; if 10 is a perfect score, it would be an 8. The only drawback was the brief instability in the early game.
Poor Gear Acquisition
In The Burning Crusade, once you reach level 70, the next major step is to farm dungeons and Heroic dungeons to obtain the best pre-raid gear.
And this is where some of the game's frustrating problems begin to surface. Just as everyone was basking in the joy of a team victory, the developers suddenly announced a bug in enemy armor, causing melee classes to become abnormally powerful in combat. Warriors, Rogues, and other melee classes could defeat enemies in just a few hits.
After the fix, melee damage returned to normal. While this change brought the game closer to its intended balance, it also drastically altered the gameplay experience overnight. While melee players were still struggling to adapt to the new changes, they were told their teams no longer needed them.
The reason given was that other classes had an advantage, meaning that while you could deal considerable damage, you lacked the so-called “utility” that many teams valued.
Compared to the previous Classic version, the ideal team composition for many raids typically includes:
- Paladin tanks, providing stronger AoE and survivability
- Mages, utilizing Improved Blizzard for kiting
- Warlocks, providing powerful AoE damage and crowd control
- Shadow Priests, providing support and mana regeneration
This excludes many melee classes, and many players have reported being repeatedly ignored or rejected after privately messaging dozens of dungeon groups. While guild grouping can significantly alleviate this problem, the experience can be frustrating for players who don't want to follow guilds to loot gear.
Therefore, for some melee classes like Warriors, acquiring BiS might only be a 5 out of 10 experience. While the game content itself isn't inherently flawed, the game mechanics and potential social barriers among players negatively affect the overall experience.
Excellent Content
The current Phase 1 raids include: Karazhan, Gruul's Lair, and Magtheridon's Lair.
Currently, the difficulty settings for these raids are quite reasonable. Karazhan remains a relatively easy raid. Even in its initial release, it was widely considered an introductory raid designed to help players easily transition to later game content.
While some players occasionally reminisce about the past, believing Karazhan was once more difficult, many veteran players remember that Karazhan has always been relatively forgiving for well-organized groups.
Gruul's Lair is the most challenging in Phase 1, especially for new players unfamiliar with the co-op block-clicking mechanic. However, experienced groups can usually clear it relatively easily, so it's not considered too difficult.
In short, the current raid difficulty adjustments achieve a good balance: sufficient challenge for new players to learn the mechanics, yet easy enough for most guilds to complete. This is precisely why WoW TBC has attracted many players experiencing World of Warcraft for the first time.
Regarding the game content, if 10 points is a perfect score, it deserves an 8 - kudos to the developers for their thoughtful design.
Just Beginning
Veteran players know that The Burning Crusade's first phase is merely a warm-up. The real challenge begins in subsequent phases, which introduce more difficult raids:
- Serpentshrine Cavern
- Tempest Keep
- Hyjal Summit
- Black Temple
- Zul'Aman
- Sunwell Plateau
In these phases, guild cooperation, raid mechanics, and gear requirements will significantly increase. Therefore, you can make the most of the tail end of the first phase by forming groups, learning teamwork, and improving your gear through easier raids.
Also, while some players criticize the game for quickly becoming monotonous with dungeon content, even after reaching level 70 and completing raids weekly, there are still many activities to choose from, such as leveling alts of other classes, farming WoW TBC Classic Anniversary gold and materials, crafting professions such as alchemy, preparing raid consumables, and so on.
For example, many players are currently developing their second or third classes. Warlocks are particularly popular because of their strong PvE and PvP capabilities in TBC Classic.
Overall, Phase 1 of WoW TBC Classic performed well. While the gear acquisition process before raids was slightly tedious, the overall experience was excellent, offering ample opportunities for growth and engaging content for both new and veteran players.
Considering all factors, Phase 1 experience currently deserves an 8 out of 10.
With the upcoming release of large-scale raids like Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep, the most exciting chapters in the game may yet be on the horizon. Let's look forward to it!
