PUBG: Black Budget introduces a new extraction shooter experience, changing the traditional PUBG formula with resource management, risk-reward decisions, Coli Island exploration, and squad-based gameplay.

When PUBG is mentioned, most players still think of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, the once globally popular game. It brought the battle royale genre to the mainstream and established the classic mode of gathering resources, defeating opponents, and surviving to the end.

However, PUBG Black Budget didn't continue this logic of victory. Instead, it opted for the increasingly popular extraction shooter mode. Players need to enter dangerous areas to collect equipment and resources, and find the right time to extract amidst increasing risks.

While playing PUBG used to be about "surviving to the end," Black Budget is more about "I've got these things, do I dare to take them out?"

From Surviving to Extracting

Many veteran PUBG players, when first introduced to extraction shooters, often struggle with their habits.

In traditional PUBG, actively seeking out opponents is a skill. More kills mean better equipment and an easier path to victory.

But in Black Budget, kills are just a process. Winning a battle doesn't guarantee you've gained anything.

Sometimes, after taking down an enemy squad, you'll consume a lot of ammo, lose armor, and expose your position. Then you'll be targeted by another squad or AI, ultimately dying on the extraction route. This is a very common occurrence.

An interesting aspect of extraction games is that winning a battle can potentially cost you the entire game. This is because when you already have high-value items in your inventory, escaping safely is often more important than maximizing your gains.

The value of PUBG Black Budget Items also comes from this risk-reward system. Unlike traditional battle royale games where equipment is mainly a means to win, items collected in extraction shooters represent both progress and risk. Every valuable item carried into an extraction attempt creates a new decision: whether to keep searching for more rewards or leave before losing everything.

Moderate Pace

Currently, publicly available information indicates that a Black Budget match lasts approximately 30 minutes, with a maximum of 45 players and 15 teams operating simultaneously, each team having a maximum of three players.

This design aligns well with the playtime habits of modern players. One of the biggest hurdles in hardcore extraction games like Escape from Tarkov is the time commitment. Many players want to experience high-risk looting and gear accumulation but lack the time to explore complex systems.

Black Budget's 30-minute limit makes each action more compact. You don't have much time to slowly camp or endlessly search the map. When to enter a danger zone and when to leave will become crucial choices in a game.

This limited time will reduce players' prolonged observation, requiring a clearer objective for each map entry. Players need to judge whether the current gains are worth continuing the risk, rather than simply waiting for the final engagement.

Coli Island

Currently, only Coli Island is confirmed as a map, approximately 2.5 x 2.5 kilometers in size. This size isn't large in traditional PUBG, but for a shoot-‘em-up game, map size directly affects the pace of player interaction.

If the map is too large, players may not encounter other teams for extended periods; if the map is too small, all combat will tend to concentrate in fixed areas. 

With 45 players entering Coli Island simultaneously, they will constantly need to choose between exploration efficiency and risk, making high-value areas likely to become the focus of competition.

Based on currently available information, Coli Island includes different areas, underground facilities, and research-related locations. The design of underground facilities typically becomes a focal point of player contention, as high-reward areas often come with high risks.

Some players may choose a safer route, avoiding crowded areas and focusing on gradual progression, while others may head straight toward contested locations where better rewards and greater risks await.

Both playstyles are viable in extraction games, which is what makes them more free compared to traditional competitive shooters.

Anomaly Zones

Anomaly mechanism in Black Budget essentially serves a similar function to the blue zone in PUBG, but its impact extends beyond simply reducing the player's activity area.

One of the biggest risks in extraction shooters is players being overly conservative. When high-value resources and extraction points are consistently surrounded by ambushes, the game can easily turn into a war of attrition, waiting for other players to make mistakes.

The existence of Anomalies forces players to constantly adjust their routes, making resource contention and player encounters more frequent. Players cannot remain in safe positions indefinitely; they must choose between rewards and risks.

This mechanism echoes the background setting of Coli Island. Because the island is affected by anomalies and trapped in a time loop, players repeatedly entering and exploring this area provides a relatively reasonable explanation.

Three-Player Squads

Black Budget supports a maximum of three players per squad, a size that's well-suited for the extraction shooting gameplay.

In traditional shooters, numerical superiority often translates to greater firepower. However, in extraction shooting, squad size also affects decision-making efficiency. Too few players leave little room for error in unexpected situations; too many players may diminish the importance of individual judgment.

Compared to traditional PUBG, which emphasizes the outcome of battles, Black Budget's three-player squads place greater emphasis on communication and on-the-spot judgment among players.

Some players are responsible for observing the surroundings, some for engaging in combat, and some for managing resources and planning routes. A single opportunity to spot the enemy early can be enough to change the outcome of an entire encounter.

PUBG: Black Budget is still some time away from its official release. After the recent test, the development team will probably continue to refine the core gameplay.

If the final version retains the tension of extraction shooting while lowering the learning curve for traditional hardcore games, then Black Budget may represent an important attempt by PUBG to explore new directions.
