POE2 0.5.0 Patch Hype: Is This the Best League Start in PoE2 History?

Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.0, titled Return of the Ancients, launches May 29. Major overhauls to Breach, Expedition, Delirium, and Atlas endgame are expected, alongside a new league mechanic and new weapon types. New ascendancy classes are also hinted. This article summarizes the key hype points.

Path of Exile 2 is getting a major update: Patch 0.5.0. The development team has released four trailers so far, each systematically unveiling what this patch will contain.

From the title Now... It Is Our Time to specific art assets, Patch 0.5.0 seems to focus on a deep overhaul of existing mechanics and a comprehensive upgrade to endgame gameplay.

Some long-time observers consider this Patch 0.5.0 to be the largest content update for Path of Exile 2 to date. More notably, the weapon imagery and character hints hidden in multiple trailers seem to point to the new class and weapon types that players have been eagerly anticipating.

Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0.0 is officially titled Return of the Ancients, with a major livestream scheduled for 1 PM Pacific Time on May 7th, and the actual release time being 1 PM on May 29th.POE2 0.5.0 Patch Hype: Is This the Best League Start in PoE2 History?

Overhaul of Existing Mechanics

Judging from the release schedule and visual elements of the trailers, Patch 0.5.0 will significantly adjust several existing mechanics in Path of Exile 2. These reworks are not simple numerical adjustments, but involve a complete overhaul of gameplay logic and boss battles.

Breach

The fourth trailer, titled Now... It Is Our Time directly showcases Breach-related visuals: the appearance of hands of Breach, a scene of cults kneeling before God, and a floating purple longsword. These visual elements were not randomly selected.

A key concept art piece reveals an expansion of Breach backstory: in the prophecy of unification, the five Breach Lords were supposed to merge into a single entity called Xesht-Uia, but because Chayula failed to participate in the unification, the fragmented and insane entity Xesht was born in the current game.

The kneeling figures appearing in the trailer are Chayula's followers on the continent of Wraeclast. This narrative clue suggests that Patch 0.5.0 may introduce a brand new Pinnacle boss.

This means that Breach gameplay may not only receive mechanic-level optimizations, but may even introduce a separate Pinnacle boss battle. Along with Breach rework, Path of Exile 2 Currency is also expected to be adjusted.

Expedition

The second trailer clearly points to an update to Expedition system. Similar to Breach, Expedition, as one of the core gameplay elements of Path of Exile 2, is expected to receive a complete mechanics redesign in Patch 0.5.0.

While there is currently no confirmed information about an Expedition Pinnacle BOSS, judging from the overall scale of this update, Expedition may also receive its own Pinnacle boss.

Delirium and Spirits

The third trailer is relatively subtle, but analysis suggests it may involve two mechanics: Azmeri Spirits and Delirium Mirrors.

Delirium mechanic has undergone multiple iterations in Path of Exile 1, and if it is reworked in Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0, it will likely include a new boss fight. As for Spirits, information is currently limited, but it's possible they will be linked to map exploration or endgame gameplay.

Complete Overhaul

The first trailer showcased a visual resemblance to Infinite Atlas, featuring monoliths and other unknown elements. This is widely interpreted as a major overhaul of the endgame system.

Atlas of Worlds

The current endgame gameplay in Path of Exile 2 still has room for improvement in terms of depth. In Patch 0.5.0, the progression logic of Atlas of Worlds, Atlas Passive Skill Tree, and the functionality of Map Device may all be adjusted.

The visual style in the trailer hints at a more open, non-linear map network, similar to an developed patch of Voidstone in Path of Exile 1, but the specific node connection methods and unlocking conditions still await official announcement.

New League Mechanism

Besides the overhaul of existing mechanics, Patch 0.5.0 will probably introduce a completely new League mechanism. This means that, besides Breach, Expedition, and Delirium updates, players will encounter a separate new content system.

Meanwhile, new Leagues often introduce new Path of Exile 2 Currency, such as those that can modify weapon affixes or unlock special crafted items, further enriching the economic system.

The specific name and gameplay of this mechanism have not yet been revealed, but judging from the scale of the update, it is unlikely to be simple farmer content; it is more likely to have its own bosses, rewards pool, and strategic depth.

New Classes and New Weapons

In the four trailers and related social media updates for Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0, development team members have intentionally or unintentionally released visual clues about new weapons and classes.

The third trailer features a floating giant longsword radiating purple energy. Prior to this, another team member posted a GIF of Gladiator; in Expedition trailer, a character has a dagger tucked into their side.

These are not isolated art installations; weapon types such as axe, dagger, and sword have not yet appeared in their full form in Path of Exile 2.

Given the significant delay of Patch 0.5.0, the developers have no reason to create false expectations by continuously showcasing new weapon imagery. Therefore, at least one entirely new weapon type (likely a sword) is highly likely to be implemented with Patch 0.5.0.

Closely related to weapons is the new class. In the existing class system, Ascendancy branches of several core classes are still incomplete. Gladiators in the trailer hint at a class or ascendancy focused on melee physical damage.

Based on various clues, Patch 0.5.0 is expected to introduce at least two new Ascendancy classes, and may even unlock a completely new base class. The player community's anticipation for this has surpassed their focus on the mechanics rework, and the development team's marketing strategy clearly reflects this expectation.

Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0, Return of the Ancients, will be a major update centered on mechanics rework and endgame expansions. All the answers will be revealed in the livestream on May 7th (Pacific Time), and the content is sure to be highly anticipated.
