For players long plagued by stuttering, freezing, and even crashes in Path of Exile 2 DX12 mode, a glimmer of hope has finally emerged.
As Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5 continues to be released, more and more players are reporting shader anomalies, random freezing, and driver crashes in DX12 mode.
Recently, NVIDIA staff have begun actively participating in PoE 2 community discussions, collecting real-world cases from players regarding Patch 0.5, hoping to help QA team further pinpoint the problem.
While NVIDIA's involvement doesn't mean the problem has been completely resolved, it at least indicates that this long-standing issue has entered a more formal investigation phase.

Discoveries from Long-Term Player Investigations
After NVIDIA began paying attention to PoE 2 DX12 issues, a player who had been experiencing freezing issues shared their troubleshooting experience.
The player stated that over the past two years, he had tried numerous common solutions, including adjusting DLSS, texture quality, lighting, and shadow settings; disabling sound effects; clearing the shader cache; enabling shader cache preloading; and modifying the cache size in NVIDIA control panel.
To rule out hardware malfunctions, he even reinstalled Windows 11, Steam, and the game, repeatedly changed NVIDIA drivers, and upgraded from an i7-13700K platform to a Ryzen 7 9800X3D platform for testing.
However, even with the hardware changes, the problem persisted.
Since RTX 3090 graphics card was the only component that remained unchanged, he began to suspect that the real issue might not be purely hardware-related, but a compatibility problem between the game engine, DX12 rendering workflow, and NVIDIA drivers in Return of the Ancients.
Subsequently, he conducted a crucial test: reverting to NVIDIA 560.70 WHQL driver.
This driver version was released in July 2024, but the test results surprised him.
Under the old driver environment, PoE 2 showed a significant improvement in stability; Shader Cache no longer exhibited abnormal growth, and it could be cleared normally after reaching a certain size.
While individual player testing cannot prove that all users will encounter the same issue, this case provides an important direction: for some games that heavily rely on Shader compilation and complex rendering processes, a new driver does not necessarily mean greater stability.
DX12 Freezes Still Trouble Players
DX12 issues in Path of Exile 2 have persisted for some time.
Many players have reported sudden, prolonged freezes during gameplay, sometimes even occurring every few minutes. Even in Return of the Ancients, some players still encountered similar issues.
More troublesome is that these freezes often occur in high-pressure scenarios such as map challenges and endgame content. Once the game freezes, it not only affects the pace of gameplay but may also lead to the loss of rewards.
Some players stated that the frequency of crashes seems to have decreased recently, but the problem has not completely disappeared. Previously, GGG had been monitoring DX12 stability issues and attempting to optimize game performance through updates.
However, because the problem involves multiple aspects, including the game engine, DirectX 12, shader compilation, and graphics card drivers, it's difficult for the development team to handle alone.
Now, NVIDIA's proactive involvement in the investigation is undoubtedly a positive sign for players currently using Patch 0.5.
Why are DX12 Issues So Difficult to Fix?
Path of Exile 2 is inherently a game with high demands on GPU resource management.
Numerous real-time effects, complex skill effects, dynamic map resources, and shader compilation all require the system to continuously process large amounts of data. While DX12 offers higher performance and lower-level control, it also means game developers need to shoulder more resource management responsibilities.
When compatibility issues arise between the game engine, graphics card drivers, and hardware, it can lead to freeze or crashes that are difficult to reproduce.
This explains why many players find that with the same graphics card and the same patch, some experience stable gameplay while others encounter frequent issues.
The biggest problem with this bug is that it rarely affects all users consistently; rather, it's related to hardware configuration, driver version, and specific game scenarios.
The final content in Patch 0.5 is a resource-intensive part, making it more prone to amplify these problems.
Vulkan Becomes a Temporary Solution for Players
Besides reverting to NVIDIA driver, many players have found that switching the rendering mode from DX12 to Vulkan improves game stability.
While Vulkan mode may sacrifice some frame rate performance in some cases, stable gameplay is clearly more important than pursuing maximum performance for players who frequently experience freezes.
Furthermore, some players have reported that enabling NVIDIA DLSS and appropriately lowering some graphics settings can reduce Deadlock errors, loading anomalies, and memory-related issues.
Some players have also discovered that PoE 2 ran perfectly fine for months without updating their NVIDIA drivers, but after updating the drivers for other games, Return of the Ancients environment started crashing frequently.
This further reinforces players' speculation that "driver version affects PoE 2 stability."
Waystone Map in the Endgame Might Be the Area where the Problem is most Concentrated
Currently, another popular view in the community is that DX12 freezing issue may not occur evenly throughout the game, but is more pronounced in the endgame.
Some players have reported that the early upgrade and normal map phases are normal, but the freezing probability increases significantly after entering Waystone map. They often experience game crashes while farming Path of Exile 2 Currency.
The specific reason may be related to the higher resource pressure in the endgame content. More monsters, more complex skill effects, and more frequent resource loading can all increase shader compilation pressure and the burden on video memory management.
Therefore, this problem does not seem like a simple case of insufficient graphics card performance, but more like some kind of abnormal interaction between PoE 2, DX12, and NVIDIA driver in Patch 0.5 environment.

Currently, DX12 stuttering, freezing, and crashing issues in Path of Exile 2 Return of the Ancients are not completely resolved, but NVIDIA's involvement does bring new hope.
For players who have been plagued by this problem for a long time, what they are hoping for is not a one-off temporary workaround, but a truly stable solution.
After all, for a long-running ARPG, if players have to worry about sudden freezes every time they enter endgame content, even the richest game content will be severely affected.
Hopefully, NVIDIA and GGG can find the root cause of the problem in subsequent Patch 0.5 updates, allowing players to finally enjoy the full content of Path of Exile 2 with peace of mind.
