With the upcoming release of Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients, the new League of Runes of Aldur has been introduced, redefining the entire game landscape from a completely revamped endgame to two new Ascendancy classes.
For all players, the most pressing concerns are how to smoothly transition through the early stages of the new league and how to deal enough damage to dominate the story.
Many players try to learn high-damage techniques by watching pro streamers but often fail to grasp the key. The problem isn't a lack of game understanding, but a lack of mastery of several core game mechanics.
This guide will detail how to increase your damage by 2-5 times during the early stages of the new league, covering five key aspects:
- Weapons
- Items and Affixes
- Skill Gems and Support Gems
- Auras and Buffs
- Passive Skill Tree and Team Strategy

1. Weapons
Weapons are crucial for attack-dependent skills. In the game, every weapon belongs to a specific base tier. As you gain levels, you'll gain access to new weapons that come with different base attributes.
In PoE 2 patch 0.5.0 update, the values of amplified fire, cold, and lightning damage affixes on weapons have been reduced. This means that simply stacking elemental damage may be more difficult to achieve the desired effect than before.
However, physical damage has more room to shine, and it can be combined with relevant support skills to deal more damage.
The choice of weapon base is crucial. Avoid squandering your precious Path of Exile 2 Currency on low-tier weapons. Obtaining currency in the league is not easy. Therefore, at lower levels, you need to find base items with a higher base as quickly as possible.
For example, when you reach the appropriate level, simply pick up an Ironhead Spear or Hunting Spear from the weapon rack (such as Red Vale); the jump in base damage is more noticeable than any complex affix combination.
Also, don't neglect the level of skill gems. As you progress through Runes of Aldur league, you will obtain increasingly higher-level uncut skill gems, which will directly change the base damage of your skills. Using high-level gems to enhance your primary damage-dealing skills provides a far more direct damage boost than any equipment.
2. Items and Affixes
Once you've chosen a good weapon base, the next step is to double your damage by equipping the right affixes. Affix selection can follow these principles:
- Percentage Physical Damage
- Attack Speed
- Elemental Damage vs. Lightning Damage
- Spell Damage vs. Global Damage
- Curses and Marks
- Additional Damage (e.g., gloves, belts, and rings)
Among these, regardless of whether you're using a bow, sword, or staff, percentage physical damage is one of the highest priority affixes because it's multiplicative based on your weapon's base physical damage.
In Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients, curses serve as a potent means of enhancing spell damage, particularly when confronting enemies that possess high stacks of defense.
Casting an Elemental Weakness Hex to lower their resistance can be devastating. Curses can significantly increase your spell damage.
There's also a special weapon mechanic you absolutely must utilize in 0.5.0: Verisium Runeforging. This means that various legendary armor pieces you obtain at lower levels, even if their stats are outdated, can now be directly upgraded to level 55 or higher.
3. Skill Gems and Support Gems
Path Of Exile 2 Skill Gems & Support Gems have seen a significant boost in Return of the Ancients, becoming arguably the core of build damage in the new league. When choosing them, look for support gems that create a synergistic effect greater than the sum of its parts (1+1>2) with your primary skill.
For example, for classes that rely on shockwaves, choose support gems that increase area-of-effect damage; for spell-casting-dependent spells, Spell Echo is the best choice.
A skill can have a maximum of 5 support gem slots, but this upgrade process consumes Jeweler's Beads, so planning the order in which they are used is crucial.
There are three basic logics for choosing support gems:
- Damage Amplification: Prioritize support gems with More Damage affix, such as Elemental Focus and Melee Physical Damage.
- Complementary Mechanisms: For example, if your skill has high damage but a small range, you can pair it with an Increased Area of Effect support gem; if you consume mana quickly, you can pair it with Inspiration.
- Defensive Synergy: Some support gems reduce some damage while providing survivability, such as Blind or Knockback. These can be kept in reserve if your damage is sufficient.
4. Auras and Buffs
If increasing your damage through the key mechanisms mentioned above is the most basic approach, then doubling your damage through auras and persistent buffs is another dividing line between high-level and average players. The key is how to maximize the benefits of limited Spirit Reservation.
A primary prerequisite is that you must be familiar with the mana costs of various auras.
Large auras (50% Spirit Reservation) provide all-around offensive and defensive capabilities, such as Haste aura. Smaller auras (10% or 35% Spirit Reservation) offer more targeted damage increases, such as Anger aura.
During the initial progression of new leagues in Path of Exile 2, it's recommended to activate only one aura at a time. Unless you have a large amount of Spirit Reservation talent, don't sacrifice too much base mana for multiple auras.
You can choose from these three auras: Anger, Wrath, and Hatred.
It's worth noting that you can also enhance aura effects with support gems. For example, Arrogance Support can improve your aura effects, but at the cost of using life force to retain mana. While this increases damage, it reduces your tankiness, so use it cautiously during progression.
5. Passive Skill Tree and Team Strategy
After mastering all the above mechanics, your damage can be increased by at least 2-5 times compared to before the adjustments. The next step is how to translate this high damage output into actual combat.
First, you need to optimize your Passive Skill Tree, as it's the ultimate multiplier amplifying all the aforementioned mechanics.
In Path of Exile 2 Return of the Ancients, Passive Skill Tree underwent some adjustments. If you're a physical damage dealer, don't forget to allocate talent points related to Impale or Bleed in the mid-game to maximize physical damage; if you're a magic damage dealer, then Spell Damage and Elemental Penetration should be your core focus.
Secondly, if possible, we also recommend playing with friends. The damage output in a group can be multiplied. For example, one player can handle auras and curses, while another focuses on damage output. This clear division of roles can dramatically increase your team's progression speed in 0.5.0.
Now, Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.0 is about to launch, with new rune crafting, new alliance mechanics, and new endgame gameplay awaiting you. Don't be afraid to explore; actively apply these strategies, and your damage will no longer be just enough, but will skyrocket.
