With the upcoming Patch 0.5.0 for Path of Exile 2, League Return of the Ancients introduces new mechanics and challenges. For newcomers transitioning from Campaign to the late game in Patch 0.5.0, the key is not blindly pursuing damage, but rather establishing a reliable survival system.
In Return of the Ancients, much frustration stems from neglecting basic stats. Unlike experienced players who prioritize speed, newcomers need more room for error.
Defense Basics in Patch 0.5.0
A Campaign's defensive system relies on the accumulation of several key stats; newcomers should check their stage objectives one by one, especially under Return of the Ancients league mechanics.
Increasing Forgiveness
A basic Armor item can increase survival counts from six to over eight in Act 1 of Patch 0.5.0 because Armor reduces a significant amount of small physical damage. When choosing Armor, prioritize Strength, as each point of Strength provides two points of Life.
Upgrade your Armor base every few chapters; higher-level bases provide a significant increase in Armor value. This remains true throughout Return of the Ancients.
For shield characters, combine Energy Shield and Life stats, ensuring at least 300 points by the end of each act, reaching 600 points in Act 2 and close to 900 points in Act 3. This can be achieved by checking shops and picking up Magic Items.
Avoid Hoarding
The most common mistake for beginners in Patch 0.5.0 is keeping their starting Lesser Life Flask. Before facing King in the Mists in Act 1, you must replace your Life Flask from the initial 50 recovery to a Level 4 Flask with 90 recovery or a Level 10 Flask with 150 recovery.
Act 2 uses a Level 16 Flask with 260 Life, while Act 3 requires a Level 23 or 30 Flask. While upgrading Flask Level, use Path of Exile 2 Currency to upgrade it to Magic quality, adding affixes such as increased recovery. This is even more important in Return of the Ancients due to denser monster packs.
A Magic quality Level 23 Flask may actually provide more recovery than a regular Level 30 Flask. Mana Flasks also need upgrading; skill interruptions often occur due to mana depletion. Pay attention to shop refreshes each chapter and look for high-quality base items among the drops.
Resistances
It's difficult to maximize all resistances during Campaign phase of Patch 0.5.0, but adjustments can be made temporarily based on the main damage types in each area.
In the later stages of Act 1, prioritize stacking Cold resistances. In the early stages of Act 2, the mines are full of Fire damage; a Ruby Ring base affix can provide considerable resistances. In the latter half of Act 2, Lightning resistances become crucial. Return of the Ancients league modifiers may shift these priorities slightly, but the core advice holds.
There are three ways to switch resistances: regularly check the merchant to purchase resistance equipment; keep resistance rings with different bases and temporarily switch between them; use Runes to insert resistance runes.
Completing Act 2 Elemental Offering event will also grant you a resistance ring and its corresponding runes.
League Mechanics and Fixed Rewards
The greatest value of Return of the Ancients League lies in providing a stable source of equipment and currency. New players should actively participate in League content during Patch 0.5.0.
League Mechanics
League encounters in each area will spawn a large number of additional monsters, whose loot quality is higher than that of regular monsters. Completing League quests often comes with guaranteed rewards; for example, Act 2 may yield Lesser Jeweller's Orb, and Act 3 may yield Regal Orb.
Path of Exile 2 Currency generated by League quests can directly improve equipment quality. Patch 0.5.0 has not changed this core loop, so take full advantage.
It is recommended that each time you enter a new area, you prioritize finding League quest entrance to clear it before proceeding with the main storyline. This ensures that, at the end of every chapter in Return of the Ancients, your equipment base is notably stronger than most players'.
Permanent Buff Quests
Press U key to open World Map. When you defeat a boss with a plus symbol, you receive lasting character bonuses - like Skill Points and raised maximum resistances. These are unchanged from previous leagues, but Patch 0.5.0 rewards them as much as ever.
Key Rewards Often Overlooked by New Players in Return of the Ancients:
Mysterious Campsite chest in Act 1 Clearfell provides Uncut Skill Gems; Devourer in Act 1 Mud Burrow provides Skill Gems and Uncut Support Gems; Elemental Offering in the corner of Act 2 provides Resistance rings and Runes.
Complete all side quests that offer extra Skill Points. Each Passive Tree point can be converted into Life, Resistances, or Armour. Check the permanent reward list before entering each act – a habit that pays off greatly in Patch 0.5.0.
Combat Habits
Campaign failures often stem from movement habits and mindset issues. Adjusting these two behavior patterns can significantly reduce the death rate, especially in Return of the Ancients where enemy density is higher.
Hidden Risks
Many new players hold down Sprinting key while moving continuously, which is especially dangerous when facing ranged monsters, as projectiles will repeatedly hit undetected trajectories. Patch 0.5.0 did not nerf ranged enemies, so be careful.
In open areas or maps with many ranged enemies, it's recommended to use tap-to-sprint or Dodge Roll for short-distance movement. Turning off "Maintain Sprinting" option in game settings can prevent unintentional long-distance sprints.
Pause every few seconds to observe the monster's attack animation before using Dodge Roll to dodge. Dodge Roll is for avoiding single high-damage attacks, not for everyday movement.
Level and Area
When your character's level differs from the area's monster level by more than two to three levels, survival pressure increases and you suffer an experience penalty. This is still true in Patch 0.5.0. If killing the same group of monsters requires more than two flask charges, it means you're behind in level.
Solution: At the entrance to a cleared area, hold down Ctrl and click the portal, select "Create New Instance," and the area will regenerate monsters. Repeatedly clearing high-density areas two to three times will catch up in level. Use this trick freely in Return of the Ancients to stay ahead.
Checking that the area's monster level differs from your own level by no more than two levels is an effective criterion for determining whether to grind for levels.
Skill Learning
Each boss's skills have a clear avoidance window. Ground effects signal an incoming slam attack or ability. Your best response is an immediate Dodge Roll. Projectile abilities have fixed trajectories; simply run sideways to avoid them. Patch 0.5.0 bosses retain these telegraphs.
If you fail to defeat a boss three times in a row, return to the previous area and grind for ten minutes, or check if your equipment resistances are adjusted for that boss. Do not refer to speedrunners' completion times - they are not playing Return of the Ancients at a normal pace.
For regular players, spending an extra twenty minutes at the end of each chapter to complete the League mechanics and upgrade equipment is the most comfortable long-term strategy in Patch 0.5.0.
In Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0 League Return of the Ancients, three numbers: Act 1 300, Act 2 600, and Act 3 900 total health shield can summarize beginner campaign completion. Flask Levels are updated each chapter, and each area requires stacking a specific type of resistance.
Actively participate in Return of the Ancients League mechanics to gain Path of Exile 2 Currency, complete all Permanent Buff quests, disable automatic Sprinting, and reset zone leveling when falling behind. You'll get further by building defense first than by trying to play like a high-level player.
