Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0 Just Revealed Two Broken Uniques That Change Everything - Redemption and Nightfall

Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0 reveals two game-changing uniques: Redemption crossbow reworks grenade skills with zero-cost auto-attacks and stacking buffs. Nightfall shield adds a mobility skill that resets cooldowns via ice crystals. This article summarizes the key mechanics.

With the release of PoE 2 Patch 0.5.0 approaching, game balance and the equipment system are once again undergoing significant adjustments. In the latest preview, the development team revealed two brand-new unique items, providing unprecedented mechanics support for Grenade builds and Shield skills.

One item, Redemption, a Crossbow, completely restructures the output logic of Grenade skills, while the other, Nightfall, a Shield, introduces a composite skill that combines mobility and burst damage.

These two items not only represent a breakthrough in numerical terms but also expand the possibilities for character builds from a fundamental gameplay perspective. The update pace of Patch 0.5.0 is accelerating, and the appearance of these two unique items may only be the beginning of a series of adjustments to the game.Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0 Just Revealed Two Broken Uniques That Change Everything - Redemption and Nightfall

New Base Type

Before discussing the unique weapon Redemption, it's essential to understand its base type - Tart Run Cannon. This weapon requires level 65, is specifically designed for Grenade skills, and lacks the ability to reload and fire ammunition.

This means players cannot use any regular Crossbows skills and can only throw grenades. Featuring zero crit chance, a 1.4 attack speed, and physical damage far exceeding that of existing endgame Crossbows, the weapon stands out.

While it loses the common mod for extra projectiles, the development team has clarified that this base type will have its own mod pool, potentially offering suffixes for two extra projectiles or grenade damage bonuses.

These mechanics adjustments make this weapon not a simple nerf, but a targeted buff.

Auto-Attack Mechanism

The most significant change to this base type is that, because of the inability to reload, the character's default normal attack will automatically be replaced with a grenade. From the demo footage, this grenade has an extremely short cooldown of approximately 0.3 seconds and consumes no mana.

The blast radius and effect are sufficient for clearing maps. This design solves two major problems for Grenade builds in the early game: mana consumption and skill linking costs.

This change is particularly crucial for the upcoming Leech rework known in Patch 0.5.0, as the uncertainty of mana stealing will no longer affect the basic operation of grenade builds.

Practical Value

Grenade auto attack can not only serve as a primary map-clearing skill but also provide uninterrupted firepower while main Grenade skills are on cooldown. More importantly, it benefits from projectile count bonuses and possesses a shotgun effect.

While specific damage coefficients have not yet been released, the item's practical performance indicates it can already handle most normal monster hordes independently.

For players who enjoy Grenade builds but are limited by resource management, the smooth experience provided by this auto attack mechanism may be more appealing than the unique item itself.

In the resource-scarce early stages of the expansion, relying on zero-cost grenade auto attack to complete story missions and early maps will be a viable early-game path.

Redemption

Building upon the above basic types, Redemption is a unique Crossbow deeply customized for Grenade skills. It retains the characteristics of high physical damage and low attack speed, while adding several mechanic-specific mods.

Grenade Cooldown Recovery Rate may seem like a negative, but because of the significant grenade cooldown reduction it provides, talents and equipment can completely compensate for the actual negative effect. Its true strength lies in two core buffs: Explosive Rhythm and Explosive Fervor.

Unique Mechanics

Explosive Rhythm stacks when using Grenade skills. Reaching 10 stacks clears all stacks and converts them into a 10-second Explosive Fervor buff.

This buff provides two effects: a 15% increase in attack speed for each different Grenade skill used; and an additional projectile. This means players need to frequently switch grenade types to maximize the attack speed bonus, while the additional projectile compensates for the lack of this mod in the base type.

Furthermore, Redemption comes with Explosive Fervor effect, significantly improving map clearing feel and avoiding the lag caused by delayed grenade detonations.

Practical Application

Due to the lack of critical strike chance mods and the inability to easily compensate through talents, a critical strike-based grenade build is not suitable for Redemption. However, most excellent grenade skills do not rely on critical strikes; their base damage and area-of-effect are sufficient for most situations.

The attack speed bonus can partially mitigate the relatively low attack speed from Explosive Fervor, especially after switching between three or four different grenade skills, where the attack speed can reach levels close to that of normal Crossbows.

Compared to the current version's high-end rare Crossbows, Redemption may be slightly lacking in maximum stats, but its mechanics excel in pre-launch grenade throwing.

Players can pre-stack their tempo stacks before boss fights, triggering Frenzy and unleashing a barrage of grenades upon entering combat. If weapon switching doesn't reset the buffs, this playstyle further amplifies its tactical value. Overall, Redemption is more suitable for players seeking depth in gameplay and the enjoyment of skill combinations, rather than simply focusing on stat-based builds.

Nightfall

The second unique item, Nightfall, is an armor shield with a respectable base block rate and armor value.

With the addition of Quality and Runes Sockets, its armor reaches around 1200 to 1300. While this is lower than the top-tier shields on the market with over 1500 armor, it still possesses practical value. What truly makes this shield stand out is its accompanying skill, Soaring Midnight.

Core Skill

Soaring Midnight is a complex skill with two phases. The first phase throws a shield projectile that penetrates three times, dealing base physical damage and gaining additional damage based on armor. In the second phase, the player can reactivate the skill, causing the projectile to explode after a short time, dealing area-of-effect damage.

From the demo footage, the explosion damage is significantly higher than the projectile itself, and it is expected to be the primary source of damage.

In addition, this skill also includes a displacement effect, similar to Pounce. Players can move with the projectile after throwing it and detonate it, achieving a combination of instant entry and area-of-effect damage. The projectile will eventually return to the player, and if not manually detonated, the cooldown will reset to 4 seconds.

Cooldown Reset

The brilliance of Soaring Midnight lies in its cooldown reset mechanism. The skill description states that if an ice crystal is destroyed when the projectile is detonated, the cooldown will be immediately reset. This means that players can achieve continuous jumps and multiple bursts by combining skills or equipment that generate ice crystals.

Another newly released unique item, Eventide Petals, provides this ability: these shoes generate ice crystals upon critical kills or critical hits on enemies of rare rarity or higher.

Combined with Nightfall's skill system, players can build a critical-hit-centric ice-based Shield build, using ice crystals to continuously reset jump cooldowns, thus maintaining extremely high mobility and burst frequency on the battlefield.

Even without prioritizing damage, Nightfall's 4-second dash ability alone makes it a viable off-hand item in most melee builds, providing additional mobility and map clearing capabilities.

These two unique items introduced in Patch 0.5.0 expand the gameplay boundaries of PoE 2 from the perspectives of resource management and mobility. Both items demonstrate the developer's emphasis on mechanic synergy in their design and are worth exploring further after the update.
