Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients is about to launch, and GGG's game director calls it the biggest update ever, surpassing both PoE1 and all previous leagues.
This is the last major content expansion before the official launch of Path of Exile 2 1.0, bringing massive changes to almost all systems, including a reset of the endgame system, a new league mechanic, new ascendancy classes, and a reworked Otherworldly talent tree.
Whether you're a veteran player already observing and choosing your starting character, or a returning player looking to conquer the new pinnacle bosses, this ranking of the strongest builds is definitely for you.
The suggestions from patch 0.4.0 are outdated. Patch 0.5.0 modified several core build systems, and new runes offer more construction options. The top five builds on this list are the latest configurations updated based on Return of the Ancients update.
I. Walking Calamity Autobomber
Walking Calamity Autobomber is undoubtedly the top-tier build in Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.0. With this build, you simply move across the map, and all surrounding monsters are automatically cleared.
1. Operational mechanism
Walking Calamity is a skill that summons a meteor to crash into the surrounding area while you move, dealing massive fire damage to everything in its path. When paired with the game's strongest legendary Unique Talisman, Fury of the King Ashbark Talisman, you gain a significant amount of additional fire damage, giving your meteor all the base damage it needs.
Next, we incorporate Trampletoe to disperse the leftover kill damage among nearby foes. With sufficient area-of-effect effects and skill duration investment, we ultimately achieve a build that only requires pressing a key once every half minute to clear everything while moving.
2. Gameplay Experience
Walking Calamity Autobomber offers high damage while maintaining a strong defensive presence, boasting nearly 20,000 armor points, making it perfectly suited for elemental damage. For single-target damage, Molten Crash can be used, a skill that deals massive on-hit damage and creates fissures upon impact.
This skill is provided by our weapon and synergizes perfectly with Ancestral Cry: the latter causes the fissures to erupt continuously as you walk over them. Since we've placed Ancestral Cry in Ferocious Roar, it can be used while in shapeshifting.
While the overall damage of this build is difficult to calculate precisely, based on extensive testing within Path of Exile 2, it's estimated to be around 4 to 5 million damage per second, enough to instantly vaporize any top-tier boss in the game.
II. Reap Blood Mage
Reap Blood Mage allows you to wield a scythe like Grim Reaper.
1. Operational mechanism
This build utilizes Reap skill, derived from a special Reaping Staff base. Harvest allows you to swing your weapon and deal massive spell damage to all enemies in front of you. This skill trades casting speed for higher hit damage, making every swing powerful.
And when you pair Reap with Trampletoe, something truly magical takes place. Trampletoe causes a percentage of your overkill damage to affect all enemies within 2 meters of the target, and this effect can chain infinitely. With enough investment in an area of effect and a 100% critical strike chance, one single hit can wipe out the entire map.
2. Gameplay Experience
This is why Blood Mage Reap outperforms builds ranked lower. It's not simply because of higher single-target damage or faster map clearing, but because it provides the most satisfying gameplay, you can find in Path of Exile 2. Every swing of the scythe, every chain of overkill explosions, feels heavy and rewarding.
One important change is that Leech system was overhauled in patch 0.5.0, shifting to a more restrictive single-source model with lower caps. This may cause Blood Mage to feel the effects of these changes more noticeably than other builds.
III. Archmage Stormweaver Build
Stormweaver builds have been a mainstay in the build community since the early testing of PoE2. While its map clearing speed and burst damage may not match Lightning Arrow, it combines tankiness, low-cost start-up, and deep late-game potential, a combination few builds can rival.
1. Operational mechanism
The core of this build is Archmage, a powerful buff that provides a significant amount of lightning damage based on your maximum mana. Mana is the easiest stat to obtain in Path of Exile 2, making Archmage builds inherently adaptable from early game to endgame.
While most players use Archmage in conjunction with Spark, and Lightning Orb remains a good choice, capable of filling the battlefield with lightning in seconds, our specialized variant uses Arc.
Why Arc?Because when paired with Sione's Temper support gem (which causes the supported skill to fire multiple projectiles in nova form every few casts), Arc far surpasses Spark in map clearing speed. We've also added Orb of Storms to the belt slot for extra burst damage against bosses.
2. Gameplay Experience
This build is very flexible. Even if you begin with the basic Spark setup, you can later transition to Arc version once your budget permits. By stacking mana and using Mind Over Matter to provide a strong defensive player, Stormweaver Build has great potential for further development.
Furthermore, Stormweaver Build is largely unaffected by the major balance changes in PoE2: Return of the Ancients, as it doesn't rely on energy shield regeneration or excessive Leech.
Players should note that the new Rune Barrier system, a new defensive player introduced in League Runes of Aldur, synergies extremely well with mana stackers, as extra defensive layers are always welcome for builds that convert life into mana through Mind Over Matter.
The new Runic Infusion Support Rune Stone, which allows you to consume Runic Ward to directly increase the damage of any ability, is a perfect match for this build.
IV. Lightning Arrow Deadeye
White Lightning Arrow Deadeye may not have the highest single-target damage among all the popular Path of Exile 2 builds, it's definitely the fastest at clearing maps. If speed is your top priority and you have a sufficient currency budget, then Lightning Arrow Deadeye is absolutely the best choice for you.
1. Operational mechanism
This specialized variant utilizes all three elemental chains and deals damage of all types, but with a greater emphasis on ice damage. By stacking an extremely high Freeze Buildup, we can freeze everything, including bosses, in just a few hits. The build incorporates an armor explosion mechanic, allowing Herald of Ice to infinitely chain reactions, triggering other Heralds along the way, achieving exponential screen coverage.
The highlight is our heavy investment in area-of-effect effects, allowing a single Lightning Arrow to clear the entire screen.
2. Gameplay Experience
Unlike the previous builds, Lightning Arrow Deadeye deals massive single-target damage through the synergy of Lightning Arrow and Lightning Rod. Placing a Lightning Rod to electrify enemies, then firing a Lightning Arrow, can melt even the most powerful bosses in seconds. This build can easily defeat all endgame bosses on the highest difficulty.
However, its defense is relatively weak, with a base life of only 3,500. You can improve its survivability by equipping gear with life or elemental resistance affixes.
In fact, considering only the strength of this build, it could easily rank in the top three on this list. Its high upgrade cost is the obstacle. To unleash the true potential of this build, you need a large amount of Path of Exile 2 Currency to upgrade skills and craft rare gear, such as Headhunters.
V. Attribute Stacking Blade Flurry Titan
Attribute Stacking Blade Flurry Titan is unique in that it's a melee build, meaning it inherently possesses chief defense. In fact, its damage and map clearing speed are also quite good.
1. Operational mechanism
The core of this build is a Pillar of the Caged God, which provides:
- Increased damage per 5 points of Strength
- Increased attack speed per 5 points of Dexterity
- Increased area-of-effect damage per 5 points of Intelligence
These bonuses are global and additive with other sources, meaning every point of attribute directly contributes to your attack power. This weapon has a base critical strike chance of 10% and reasonable physical damage, but its true power only becomes apparent when stacking these three attributes.
To maximize base damage, we use Hand of Wisdom and Action, which increases lightning damage per point of Intelligence. These two Path of Exile 2 items offer amazing attribute potential while being quite inexpensive.
Its core abilities are Tempest Flurry, Tempest Bell, Herald of Thunder, and Herald of Ash. Utilizing Constricting Command, the mere presence of an enemy nearby will register you as Surrounded, activating all Surrounded nodes and Defense gems on Passive Skill Tree. These bonuses can be amplified by Hulking Form nodes.
2. Gameplay Experience
The fatal flaw of Attribute Stacking Blade Flurry Titan build is that while its defense is sufficient in PoE 2 Patch 0.5.0, its damage is insufficient. Against high-level bosses like Xesht on the highest difficulty, this lack of damage results in longer kill times.
Patch 0.5 introduced significant changes to Leech system, adopting a single-source model with a limited cap. This Titan build is largely unaffected because its sustainability primarily comes from a high life pool and armor damage reduction, rather than Leech.
Furthermore, Return of the Ancients introduces Runic Ward defense system, which activates a secondary life pool when health reaches zero. This health pool can be applied to any armor (including the legendary gear used in this build), offering an additional survival layer.
