In the past few days, I've noticed a sudden surge in popularity for Twister, one of the early Spear Skills, in the community, sparking heated discussions among players and potentially becoming one of the best early-game skills in Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0.
However, checking the official update notes reveals that Twister didn't receive a direct buff in Patch 0.5; its last inclusion in balance adjustments was in Patch 0.3. So, why is Twister suddenly generating such a buzz?
This guide will analyze why Twister's popularity has suddenly surged in Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0.
Reasons
Introduction of Spirit Walker Ascendancy
Huntress's Spirit Walker Ascendancy is the primary reason for Twister's resurgence. The introduction of the Spirit Walker Ascendancy talent in the upcoming Patch 0.5 provides some powerful talent points that can further enhance Twister's damage. This Ascendancy focuses on enhancing projectile skills through unique Owl Spirit mechanic.
For Twister, the most crucial node is Mhacha's Gift, which allows you to consume up to three Owl Feathers at once, tripling the buff. This gives your Twister an astonishing +6 projectiles and a projectile speed increase of over 200%. In Path of Exile 2, more projectiles and faster projectile speed translate directly to an exponential increase in range and damage, making Twister a screen-clearing weapon.
After the release of PoE 2 Patch 0.5.0, top players quickly discovered Twister's immense potential. Research revealed that Twister builds exhibit speed and efficiency far exceeding most other builds.
However, it's important to note that using Twister requires more skill than Lightning Arrow. To achieve maximum damage, you need to trigger all three phases of Twister. Increased attack speed allows for rapid movement across the map while maintaining all three phases of Whirlwind.
Furthermore, Twister can trigger ground elemental effects such as Shocked or Burning Ground, dealing additional damage. Using weapon switching to cast Flame Wall might be a good way to maximize damage output.
Deflection Mechanism Changes
Another reason for the increasing popularity of Twister is the change to Deflection mechanism in PoE 2 Patch 0.5.0. Before Patch 0.5, the formula for calculating total deflection rate was (1 - (A * 0.9) / (A + 0.2 * X)) * 100. A represented the enemy's hit chance, and X represented the character's deflection value. Achieving a very high stacked deflection rate was very difficult.
After the update, the new formula is (1 - A / (A + 0.12 * X)) * 150. The values of A and X remain the same, but with the new formula, the deflection value required to reach 100% deflection rate is smaller.
This makes stacking deflection chance much easier, allowing you to have up to a 95% chance to reduce damage by 40%. Returning to Twister itself, this skill blinds enemies upon hit, reducing their hit chance by 20%, which lowers the threshold required to reach maximum glancing blow chance. Furthermore, since you release at least four to five Twisters with each skill cast, maintaining 40% damage reduction in the late game shouldn't be a problem.
Community Controversy
Twister's astonishing performance has led to serious divisions within the player community, sparking heated debates about it.
Some players believe the skill is too powerful, disrupting game balance and severely threatening character build diversity. They argue that when one skill far surpasses others, it creates a single correct build, rendering other builds either inadequate or irrelevant. These players worry that the vast majority of players will flock to Twister builds, making the late game monotonous with everyone using the same build.
Some players believe Twister's strength is overstated. They argue that only a very few highly skilled, dedicated players can reach the top levels, having optimized every aspect of their builds to perfection. They claim that while Twister is powerful for the average player, it's not so overpowered as to disrupt game balance.
Some even believe that nerfing Twister afterward would do more harm than good, considering many content creators and players have already chosen it as their starting build for patch 0.5.
Starting Build Feasibility
Theoretically, Twister is indeed a decent starting build in Return of the Ancients. It interacts with the Runes of Aldur mechanic to increase damage and generate additional projectiles.
However, some popular starting skills in PoE 2 Patch 0.5.0, such as Oisonburst Arrow, Snipe, Lightning Arrow, and Toxic Growth, have been nerfed. This will also negatively impact the builds built around them, making Twister one of the few viable options.
If the developers don't nerf Twister in the near future, I think it might be the best choice for early game progression. If there are any changes later, we might need to find a new, suitable build.
