Return of the Ancients update for Path of Exile 2 has finally been unveiled. This update is significant for the game's Early Access phase - as the last major content update before the official 1.0 release, the patch will go live on May 29, 2026, coinciding with the release of New League Runes of Aldur.
With the new Patch approaching, it's time to review its highlights. In the following article, based on recent GGG livestreams, developer interviews, and community data analysis, I will provide a preview of three potential nerfs and three potential buffs in patch 0.5.0.
Three Nerfs
1. Cast on Critical
In the current iteration of Path of Exile 2, Cast on Critical gem and its associated trigger mechanics stand as the most significant factor disrupting game balance. According to data from Patch 0.4.0, among characters level 90 and higher, the share of Cast on Critical builds reached 26% during the second week, then surged to a striking 41% by the sixth week.
This means that nearly half of high-level players ultimately switched to the same playstyle.
The root of this problem isn't the trigger mechanism itself - in PoE 1, Cast on Crit was also a top-tier late-game build option, but achieving this required significant investment and considerable trade-offs. In the current Patchof PoE 2, the entry barrier for trigger-based builds has significantly decreased for two reasons:
First, the gem slot system and Spirit resource mechanism make the configuration cost of trigger gems relatively low. Spirit is a scarce resource, and its efficient use is a crucial consideration, while trigger gems are one of the most profitable ways to consume Spirit.
Second, Cast on Critical mechanism is much stronger overall in the current Patch of Path of Exile 2 - Cast on Critical often becomes the optimal solution for almost all damage builds.
When high returns and low costs are simultaneously achieved, it's not surprising that the concentration of Cast on Critical builds among high-level characters continues to rise.
In Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0, GGG will probably re-evaluate the overall energy acquisition mechanism of the proc system. Possible adjustments include: recalibrating energy acquisition based on hit damage ratios, adjusting the numerical curves of critical strike affixes, or adding more competitive Spirit consumption options in addition to proc gems.
Regardless of the specific methods, Cast on Critical will be the most closely watched target in this balance adjustment. To maintain the balance between the proc mechanism and class strength, it is likely to be weakened compared to the current patch.
2. Gem Rank Affix
Besides Cast on Critical, Gem Rank affixes also have a significant impact on character damage. Moreover, it has always been the biggest balance issue in Path of Exile 2 because Gem Rank affix values are very high on weapons, amulets, and even gloves and quivers, contributing almost a third of your damage output.
Its strength far exceeds that of other similar equipment.
This very strength makes them essential equipment for almost all builds; without their bonuses, even unique items would seem unremarkable.
However, this also significantly impacts the player experience, especially in the early game. A difference in Gem Rank can create a huge gap between two players with similar character and equipment levels.
GGG has acknowledged this issue in Q&A for Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.4.0 and stated they are researching solutions.
The most likely direction for adjustment is: a significant nerf or even removal of Gem Rank affixes on Martial Weapons, and a substantial reduction in the current cap for Gem Rank affixes on Caster Weapons. Only by bringing Gem Rank affixes back from their current absolute dominance can the diversity of the weapon affix pool truly be restored.
3. Item Rarity Affixes
In addition to nerfing Gem Rank affixes, the effects of item rarity affixes in Path of Exile 2 also need adjustment.
In fact, item rarity affixes have always been a hot topic because increasing item rarity directly affects the drop rate of Currency in the game. Therefore, most players highly value this attribute.
Item rarity affixes are generally obtained through crafting using Path of Exile 2 Currency or from equipment. Targeted use on specific maps increases the quantity and quality of Currency drops, but not all players have sufficient Currency or are lucky enough to obtain such equipment.
Therefore, some players feel the disparity caused by item rarity affixes is unfair and reject their existence.
Even Jonathan Rogers stated that he wanted to remove this attribute, but before that, a suitable replacement affix needed to be found in the affix pool. GGG did indeed do that: since the 0.2.0 update in May 2025, the effect of item rarity affixes has been halved in the game. This move was made to balance the game and prevent the benefits from becoming too excessive.
Three Major Enhancements
1. Atlas Tree
As can be seen from the aforementioned nerfs, all these updates are ultimately aimed at improving player experience and game balance and fairness. The enhancements serve the same purpose.
The most significant change in Patch 0.5.0 is the complete overhaul of Atlas Tree. According to information released in the official livestream, the new Atlas Tree will contain over 300 passive nodes.
Players can gradually unlock all nodes by completing a new core progression area called Fortress, allowing them to choose from multiple different endgame playstyles without frequently resetting their character builds.
It's worth noting that when game director Mark Roberts was asked about Atlas Tree during Q&A session for Patch 0.4.0, he described the current Atlas Tree as being "completely on a different level" compared to future patchs. It now appears that he was referring to this new talent system with over 300 nodes in Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0.
More importantly, patch 0.5.0 will introduce five brand-new endgame storylines, fully covering the remastered patch of existing endgame gameplay such as Breach, Delirium, Expedition, and Ritual.
The addition of endgame storylines provides dedicated narrative paths for large boss battles, eliminating the need to rely on random key drops for first-time challenges. This improvement significantly optimizes the player experience.
Overall, the new Atlas system will significantly enhance player autonomy, greatly reducing inefficient, repetitive tasks like grinding towers or being forced to run unwanted maps.
2. New Paragon Bosses & Unique Item Drops
To address the new endgame gameplay and the new Bosses appearing in the storylines, the current shortage of high-quality items has become a major concern - the scarcity of Path of Exile 2 Unique Items has been a key point of player feedback during early testing. Patch 0.5.0 will address this need with a large amount of new content.
According to the official announcement, patch 0.5.0 introduces 15 new bosses, including 4 Paragon-level battles. These top-tier bosses are deeply integrated into the reworked endgame gameplay. Regarding unique items, patch 0.5.0 will add over 40 new legendary items and over 100 new crafting runes.
The increase in unique items not only provides players with more gear options but also creates more possibilities for class builds.
3. Ascendancy Classes
Whether buffed or nerfed, it all serves the player and the character they control. The diversity of Ascendancy Classes has always been a core appeal of Path of Exile 2. However, in early testing, some Ascendancy Classes had significantly low usage rates, especially Acolyte of Chayula, Gemling Legionnaire, and Chronomancer.
Among them, Acolyte of Chayula is the most likely to receive a substantial rework in Patch 0.5.0 - this version includes a complete rework of Breach mechanics, and this Ascendancy Class has a story connection to the Breach lord Chayula, making it a narrative fit for the update. Gemling Legionnaire dominated the ladder in version 0.1 with his stat stacking, but after a significant nerf in version 0.2, he hasn't seen a resurgence.
Chronomancer, on the other hand, has always had a limited audience due to its high skill ceiling and unique toolset. The community generally hopes that patch 0.5.0 will provide at least some numerical or mechanic adjustments for all three, completing a final round of adjustments before the official release of Patch 1.0.
In addition, patch 0.5.0 will introduce two new Ascendancy Classes: Spirit Walker and Martial Artist. This is the last time new character specializations will be added before the official release of PoE 2 version 1.0.
Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients will officially launch on May 29th. According to the roadmap released by GGG, a few minor balance adjustments or mini-seasons are expected as a transition period before the official release of ExileCon in November.
Regardless of whether the final patch content perfectly matches the predictions in this article, Patch 0.5.0 will be one of the most decisive milestones in the early testing phase of PoE 2.
It not only represents GGG's final revision of the current endgame system, but also serves as a crucial testing ground for the community's confidence before the official 1.0 release.
