The update for Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients has finally been revealed, and this patch is a milestone in the early testing phase - if it receives positive feedback from players, it will directly push the game towards a full release after ExileCon in November.
It can be said that the future direction of the entire project largely depends on the performance of this update. Therefore, predicting the content of Patch 0.5.0 is particularly valuable.
With the release of the trailer, players'speculations about the update's content are growing louder. Below, I will predict two main aspects of what Patch 0.5.0 might involve: weakening or strengthening existing content.
Weakening Predictions
Cast on Critical
In the current version of Path of Exile 2, Cast on Critical Hit mechanic has serious balance issues.
According to statistics, in the second week after Patch 0.4.0, 26% of characters above level 90 were using Cast on Critical Hit build; and by the sixth week, this percentage had surged to 41%.
The root of the problem lies in Path of Exile 2's gem slot system and resource mechanics: the opportunity cost of proc-based skills is too low, while there's a lack of sufficiently competitive Spirit Skills to counter them. Coupled with the overwhelmingly powerful critical strike damage bonus, this leads most players to eventually adopt similar proc-based builds.
This contradicts the design philosophy of Path of Exile 1, which required high investment and clear trade-offs for proc-based builds. Therefore, PoE Patch 0.5.0 is highly likely to significantly adjust critical strike - based casting and its related proc mechanics.
Gem Rank Modifiers
This is a persistent balance issue that has existed since early testing.
The "+X Skill Gem Rank" affix on weapons, amulets, gloves, and quivers has a severely unbalanced benefit; a single affix often contributes a third or more of the total damage.
This makes such affixes essential for all builds, rendering most Unique Items useless due to their lack of this affix.
Worse still, it significantly widens the variance in PoE 2 player experience - a weapon with a gem-ranked item obtained two acts ago might be more useful than a newly picked-up high-damage weapon.
Player reactions have become more aggressive: not only are demands to reduce the maximum level bonus of two-handed weapons from 7 to below 3, but an even more ideal solution is to completely remove the gem-ranked affix from physical weapons and drastically reduce the stat cap for caster weapons.
Item Rarity
This is a recurring but unresolved issue.
The core reason the Item Rarity affix is essential is that it directly affects the drop rate of Path of Exile 2 Currency. GGG is well aware of this - Jonathan even admitted in Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.4.0 Q&A that "it will eventually be removed," but a suitable replacement affix needs to be found to fill the drop pool.
If the development team has found this alternative, then Patch 0.5.0 is highly likely to witness the complete removal of Item Rarity affix. From a game health perspective, this is undoubtedly an overall enhancement, but from the current perspective of relying on stacking rarity to farm Currency, it is indeed a nerf.
Enhancement Prediction
Atlas Tree & Agency
According to Mark's statement in Patch 0.4.0 Q&A, the existing Atlas Tree system is "not even in the same universe." This means that Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients is likely to receive a completely new endgame Meta Progression system.
The core direction of the new system is to give players greater autonomy, allowing them to truly focus on the gameplay content they enjoy, just like in PoE1.
Specifically, we can expect to see: more flexible dungeon type selection, even allowing players to farm only one type of dungeon; at the same time, smoother gameplay loops for alliance mechanisms such as Breach and Fog of War, reducing intermediate tasks. In short, it's about letting players do more of what they like.
Chase Uniques
With the introduction of new Pinnacle Bosses in PoE 2: Return of the Ancients - including original bosses with mechanics like Breach and Sacrifice, as well as new bosses in the main storyline Atlas of Worlds - GGG will undoubtedly seize this opportunity to release meaningful Path of Exile 2 Unique Items.
However, this requires the weakening of Gem Rank affix.
Only when Gem Rank affix is no longer tied to equipment design can designers create interesting Unique Items that are neither too powerful nor too useless. We anticipate that the new boss drop in Return of the Ancients will bring truly exciting rare Path of Exile 2 Items, while the existing Uniques pool may also see some balance adjustments.
Ascendancy Reworks
Patch 0.4.0 made some minor numerical adjustments to Acolyte of Chayula, Gemling Legionnaire, and Chronomancer, but this seems more like a stopgap measure.
Of the three Ascendancy Classes, Acolyte of Chayula is the most likely to receive a substantial rework in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients. The reason is simple: Patch 0.5.0 coincides with a major rework of Breach League, and Acolyte of Chayula, as a member of Flame Guardian Monk, is deeply intertwined with Breach lore. GGG will probably adjust it accordingly.
As for Gemling Legionnaire and Chronomancer, while it's currently uncertain whether they will receive a rework in the same patch, the overall direction of adjustments to Ascendancy Classes system is clear, and it's even possible that Patch 0.5.0 will introduce entirely new Ascendancy Classes.
PoE 2: Return of the Ancients carries the most crucial weight in the early testing phase. Whether it's balancing Cast on Critical Hit mechanic, refactoring Gem Rank affixes, or the ultimate fate of Item Rarity, all will profoundly impact the game's ecosystem.
The restructuring of Atlas Tree, the return of Unique items, and the adjustments to Ascendancy Classes represent GGG's positive response to player experience. Whether all of this can deliver a satisfactory result before the full version is released in December remains to be seen.
