GGG's livestream on May 7th will reveal the update content for Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients, a welcome relief for eagerly awaiting players. Furthermore, a Q&A session was added at the end of the livestream, where Jonathan Rogers answered many of the most pressing questions from players.
The scale of this update is immense, with particularly far-reaching changes to the endgame structure, along with major overhauls to crafting, Atlas, league mechanics, and Ascendancy classes. In the following section, I'll offer a comprehensive breakdown of all the new features and adjustments revealed during the livestream preview and Q&A session.
New Runesmithing
Runes of Aldur League is a brand new league introduced in this update, its core being a crafting mechanic introduced by the blacksmith Farrow - Ezomyte Runesmithing. The surface logic of this system is very intuitive: players can find scattered Ezomyte Remnants throughout the map and inscribe runes onto them. Different combinations of runes produce various crafting rewards, from basic Path Of Exile 2 Currency to items all the way to more advanced socketed equipment.
But the real key is that each crafting action incurs a direct combat cost. Activating a Remnant awakens nearby enemies, whose abilities depend on the type of rune you inscribe. For example, Fire choices spawn enemies skilled at throwing fire, while Moon choices trigger bizarre celestial phenomena.
The more complex the rune combination, the more chaotic the resulting combat - meaning crafting is directly linked to the difficulty of real-time combat.
Over the course of the league, Remnants gradually gain more rune slots, which results in both a higher potential for loot and increasingly difficult multi-wave enemy assaults. At the same time, the new league adds Verisium resources alongside an entirely fresh Runic Ward system.
This shield serves as a secondary defensive measure, acts as a crafting Currency, and provides energy for mana-independent abilities. More importantly, it opens up possibilities for builds that transcend class limitations, allowing players to mix and match it with standard skill gems.
Furthermore, this update adds over 100 new runes, including meta-level options like elemental conversion and affix manipulation, further pushing the crafting system into more experimental territory.
All these changes ultimately lead to a major shift in Path of Exile 2's late-game gameplay: Atlas will become a more objective and structurally rigorous game space, gradually evolving into large-scale fortress encounters and dynamically evolving map mechanics - more like a meticulously designed campaign superimposed on late-game map exploration.
Atlas Remastered
Let's talk about Atlas; it has been completely remastered. At the same time, the design philosophy of Passive Tree has also undergone a fundamental change: it no longer guides players to a single optimal path, but emphasizes flexibility and personalization.
In the past, Path of Exile 2 players pursued the most efficient path; now, the focus is on allowing each player to decide what content they want to experience in the late game, continuously adjusting and refining it as they progress.
This single change profoundly reshapes the entire endgame experience, especially for players accustomed to pushing their Atlas configurations to the limit.
Hybrid nodes are a key element of this remaster. They no longer simply boost attributes but integrate multiple mechanics, fundamentally altering how players actually engage in combat. For example, certain combinations now allow multiple bosses to appear simultaneously - a livestream showcased a scenario where Act 1 and Act 2 bosses appeared in the same fight.
Brand new Atlas Ascendancies further expand this flexibility. Players can ally with different Atlas figures (such as Doryani) to gain unique buffs, such as hunting bonuses or ritual enhancements against specific monsters. More importantly, these buffs can be easily switched between different maps.
This mechanism creates a more adaptive endgame gameplay, allowing players to flexibly adjust their game focus based on character build objectives or content preferences.
League Mechanics
Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients integrates and updates the new League Mechanics with the old ones, making them more compatible with the remastered Endgame content. Delirium, Breach, Ritual, Expedition, and Abyss are no longer isolated; each mechanic has a clear progression path, unique gameplay, and an upgrade system.
The new League Mechanics are tightly integrated with Endgame loop, bringing new encounters, bosses, and loot, even surpassing previous peak challenges.
- Delirium: A visible depth indicator has been added, allowing players to clearly track their progress into the fog of war. Enemy density and strength increase linearly with depth, directly linking rewards and risks, making combat decisions more rigorous and less of an unknown.
- Breach: The redesign of Breach aims to encourage sustained combat rather than quick clearing. Players can extend combat time by defeating enemies. Once the duration reaches a certain point, Breaches will enter a berserk phase, significantly increasing enemy offensive power, but also boosting player rewards.
- Ritual: After Patch 0.5.0 update, Ritual will become a structured upgrade system linked to narrative progression. After the first encounter with the endgame event, Aoife and Wildwood will permeate subsequent Ritual content. Ritual rewards are currently limited to Path of Exile 2 Unique Items and Omens, progressively increasing in difficulty, ultimately leading to King in the Mists, giving the system a somber sense of destiny.
- Expedition: Deeply integrated with Runecrafting, expanded into an ocean exploration system. Players can follow procedurally generated routes in Expedition, reaching islands and challenging bosses. Compared to other endgame systems, Expedition has a more measured pace, emphasizing exploration rather than speed.
- Abyss: Not completely reworked but significantly expanded. Later in the game, massive Abyssal appears on the map. Advancing along the fissures triggers special encounters, ultimately leading to Abyssal Depths where defeating the leaders of the three factions grants access to the key to Well of the Souls.
New Ascendancies
In Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0, GGG also showcased new Ascendancy classes for Amazons and Monks.
Spirit Walker
Spirit Walkers revolve around Azmerian spirits closely associated with animals like Stags, Owls, and Bears. Each spirit significantly alters the gameplay: Stag-centric builds lean towards group charge combat; Owls enhance ranged attacks and projectiles; and Bears not only summon a Bear spirit companion but can further enhance their abilities through Ascendancy buffs.
In addition, Spirit Walker can synergize with systems like Idolatry and beast taming, recruiting powerful creatures such as Chimeral Beast and Frozen Talon as allies. More uniquely, Spirit Walker possesses the ability to tame beast leaders - a feature not found in other Ascendancies in the game.
Martial Artist
Martial Artist is a new Ascendancy in Monk, employing a completely different combat strategy. Its core lies in timing and fluid movement; correct combos accumulate advantages in real-time, leading to stronger effects and a more deliberate combat style: player actions directly impact damage output, rather than passively triggering attribute bonuses.
Martial Artist's uniqueness also lies in its deep interaction with the illusion and rune systems. They can create echoing attack clones that can repeat their own attacks, effectively multiplying damage when positioned correctly; they can also summon bell-like ghostly constructs to punish enemies in groups, making positioning crucial to the damage cycle.
Furthermore, Martial Artists possess a unique runic tattoo mechanic, allowing multiple runes to be directly embedded into characters, rather than relying on Path of Exile 2 Items. This feature sets them apart from other Ascendancies.
Reshaping the Endgame Content
The reshaping of Path of Exile 2 endgame content is one of the biggest updates in this project, manifesting in structural optimizations. In the new version of Return of the Ancients, the development team abandoned the previously loose and disorganized endgame gameplay, instead introducing a clear main storyline to guide the player's progress.
This doesn't hinder players who enjoy free exploration; rather, this freedom is embedded within an overall framework that clearly conveys the game's design.
The updated storyline is not merely decorative; it changes how players interact with encounters and progression. GGG emphasizes that their goal is to reduce player confusion without sacrificing game depth.
In PoE 2, players will no longer need to piece together system rules through trial and error. Instead, they will progress along a clearer chain of objectives that naturally guide them through the later stages of the game.
The upgraded boss battles are one of the most tangible manifestations of this endgame content overhaul. All important endgame bosses, including returning Path of Exile characters, are now tied to dedicated questlines rather than being randomly triggered. This change eliminates the long-standing uncertainty players have about when and how to unlock key battles, while retaining the progressive difficulty and selectable challenge tiers.
The result is a more structured endgame content path that allows players to control the pace while significantly reducing guesswork. Of course, GGG has explicitly stated that players can still choose the path they wish to explore.
Beyond these major system-level innovations, Return of the Ancients also introduces a series of improvements designed to optimize the gameplay experience. These adjustments strive to reduce friction between the campaign and endgame content without diminishing the depth of the mechanics. Its goal is not simply to improve the readability or ease of use of the interface, but to eliminate unnecessary points of confusion while maintaining the deep core of Path of Exile 2.
For players who want to deeply experience the endgame content of Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0, this update is undoubtedly a huge leap forward. It brings both new challenges and greatly expands the possibilities for creative builds.
