Torchlight Infinite Afterlight Explained: Why Pets Became the Biggest F2P Controversy in SS13?

Torchlight Infinite Afterlight players are debating whether pets make the game pay-to-win. We break down how Battle Pets, Drop Pets, and farming efficiency impact F2P progression, and whether free players can still enjoy the endgame.

Aug 06, 2026 Author: EZG

Torchlight Infinite has attracted a large player base with its smooth combat, diverse build options, and traditional ARPG-style dungeon crawling experience. However, as SS13 progresses, the game's Pets system has become a hot topic of discussion within the community.

Many new players ask the same question: Is Torchlight Infinite truly pay-to-win? Can players still enjoy the full game experience without spending any money?

Torchlight Infinite Afterlight Explained: Why Pets Became the Biggest F2P Controversy in SS13?

Currently, player feedback on Torchlight Infinite Afterlight is relatively consistent: free-to-play players can play normally and complete the endgame content, but pets system does indeed affect late-game progression efficiency, especially in resource acquisition.

F2P Players Can Complete All Content

Even without spending any money, players can still experience all the classes, skills, and main gameplay elements in Torchlight Infinite, gradually accumulating pets through season rewards, event resources, and free gacha mechanics.

As long as free-to-play players don't prioritize leaderboard competition, rapid character development, or extreme farming efficiency, they can still tackle the challenging maps of Afterlight, explore different builds, and enjoy the complete ARPG progression experience.

TLI doesn't have content limitations that require in-app purchases. The real challenge for free-to-play players isn't the inability to complete the game, but the gap in progression speed and resource acquisition efficiency.

Without high-level pets, you can still progress through the endgame content, but gear accumulation, Torchlight Infinite Flame Elementium acquisition, and build development will all be significantly slower.

As Torchlight Infinite enters its mid-to-late game, free-to-play players typically experience greater pressure to progress, particularly around T7 to T8 boss stages. It's not that further progression is impossible, but more time is needed to farm resources, optimize gear, and adjust builds.

Compared to paying players who can accumulate resources much faster, free-to-play players may need several days or even longer to reach the same level of progress.

Therefore, many experienced players recommend that free-to-play players choose builds with faster progression and lower gear requirements, and concentrate resources on developing one character rather than simultaneously developing multiple classes.

F2P players aren't entirely unable to obtain Legendary Pets. Through season rewards, events, and free draws, new players still have a chance to acquire a certain number of legendary pets. It's important to note that the free Legendary Pets are identical in attributes to those obtained through the in-game store; there's no nerf to the free version.

The actual difference affecting the player experience comes primarily from the timing of acquisition. New pets introduced in each new season in Torchlight Infinite typically don't immediately become available through free acquisition channels. Therefore, paying players can gain the advantages of these pets earlier and achieve higher farming efficiency in the early season.

Why Pets Are the Biggest Controversy?

The controversy surrounding paid content in TLI mainly centers on pets. Currently, pets are primarily divided into Battle Pets and Drop Pets. Battle Pets mainly provide character attribute and combat ability enhancements, with high-level Legendary Combat Pets offering a significant damage boost.

Some players believe that while this boost doesn't directly determine whether a player can complete the game, it's a significant advantage for players aiming for higher-level maps, quickly defeating bosses, and challenging content.

However, what truly affects the gameplay experience in Torchlight Infinite isn't Battle Pets, but Drop Pets. Drop Pets affect your resource gains during map clearing, including drop rates in different seasons, material acquisition efficiency, and farming route rewards. While you can still participate in these activities without the appropriate pets, efficiency will be significantly reduced.

This is why some players believe that without pets, the late game in Torchlight Infinite feels more like a constant boss rush, while having suitable drop pets allows you to truly realize the value of various endgame farming mechanics.

Some high-yield Torchlight Infinite farming strategies rely on specific pet drop bonuses. Without the corresponding pets, investing in high-value consumables might not even cover the costs. Therefore, many free-to-play players choose to sell these resources to paying players and then use the acquired currency to exchange for equipment.

This economic model is somewhat similar to Scarabs market in the early days of Path of Exile. Some players don't use all the high-value resources themselves but choose to sell them to efficient farming players, profiting from the trade. TLI has also developed a similar ecosystem, with high-level pets influencing the entire game's economy.

Can SSF solve P2W problem?

Some players believe that free-to-play players can choose SSF, since these problems would disappear if they didn't participate in the trading market at all. In Torchlight Infinite Afterlight SSF, players need to progress through grinding, loot drops, and crafting.

For free-to-play players, SSF can reduce the economic gap with paying players, as everyone relies on their own resources and doesn't face the pressure from paying players.

However, SSF experience isn't easy. This mode emphasizes build planning, crafting, and long-term accumulation. If you're new to Torchlight Infinite, it's recommended to play the normal season mode first to familiarize yourself with Hero Traits, skill gems, crafting, and the trading system before trying SSF.

Furthermore, most players believe that TLI itself wasn't designed around SSF. While players can play at their own pace, without aiming for meta or necessarily challenging every Mega Boss, Pets will still affect many seasonal mechanics and farming routes; SSF cannot completely avoid these design choices.

Based on player feedback, free-to-play players of Torchlight Infinite Afterlight can definitely complete the game and experience its core content, but they will need to accept a slower resource accumulation rate and the inability to achieve top-tier farming efficiency.

For casual Torchlight Infinite players, playing completely free still provides a decent ARPG experience; while for players pursuing leaderboards, extreme builds, and high-yield gameplay, the advantages of high-level Pets will be very significant.
