Avoid These 10 Absolutely Worthless Weapons in Borderlands 4 Right Now

Borderlands 4's most worthless weapons include Soul Survivor, Buoy, and Rafa's Filántropo Class Mod, offering poor damage, risky mechanics, or impractical effects. Avoid these in Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode. This article summarizes the 10 worst items.

Apr 29, 2026 Author: EZG

In Borderlands 4's equipment system, the actual combat effectiveness of some items does not match their rarity or difficulty of acquisition. By analyzing the mechanics, trigger conditions, and performance in Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, it's possible to identify items that are difficult to use effectively in actual combat.

Borderlands 4's equipment design continues the series' innovative style, but some mechanics result in negative experiences or excessively high operational costs. Balance adjustments in Borderlands 4 are still underway; understanding the characteristics of these items will help in more rationally planning your deck building strategy.

Based on the consistency of Borderlands 4 Items mechanic, the ratio of positive benefits to negative effects, and actual usability at higher difficulties, the following ten pieces of equipment are considered low-tier in Borderlands 4 (ranked from worst to slightly better):

1. Soul Survivor

2. Buoy

3. Sideshow

4. Rafa's Filántropo Class Mod

5. Colatus Blode

6. Extra Medium

7. Potato Thrower IV

8. Kaleidosplode

9. Compleation Shield

1. Soul Survivor

This pistol is of Pearlescent rarity. Its damage bonus is increased for each teammate in "Fight for Your Life!" state. Without this condition, its base damage is lower than that of a purple pistol of the same rarity.

In a four-person party, three teammates must be down simultaneously to fully trigger the bonus. In actual combat, achieving this condition is quite difficult, and the team's overall combat capability significantly decreases while teammates are downed.

Even with all buffs active, its damage output still cannot surpass some non-Pearlescent weapons. This weapon is relatively difficult to obtain, making it a rare but less practical item in Borderlands 4.

2. Buoy

This grenade module hovers in the air for about ten seconds after being thrown, detonating only when an enemy touches it. Its flight speed is slow, its blast radius is small, and its damage is insufficient to pose a significant threat to ordinary enemies in Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode.

Obtaining these Borderlands 4 Items requires repeatedly challenging Boss Vearaxis, a time-consuming battle. While grenade modules are designed to provide area damage or crowd control, Buoy's trigger relies on enemies actively approaching, and most enemies in Borderlands 4 tend to attack from a distance, resulting in a low actual trigger frequency.

Compared to other grenades of the same rarity, Buoy's damage and ease of use are both low.

3. Sideshow

This pistol, manufactured by Tediore, creates a bubble with "Shoot Me" logo during reloading, in which the weapon floats. Shooting the bubble causes the weapon to move back and forth, accompanied by a laughter sound effect. The reload animation is lengthy, during which the player cannot attack normally.

The weapon's base damage is low, resulting in poor kill efficiency even with a character build focused on explosives. Additionally, an extra model spawned during reloading may appear near the character's head; shooting this model can damage the player, whether by enemies or allies. This weapon has a high drop rate and is commonly found in the reward pool of Legendary Bounties.

4. Rafa's Filántropo Class Mod

This job mod generates a free grenade when an active skill is retired. Some grenade mods in Borderlands 4 have a risk of self-inflicted damage because of variations in blast radius, delay, or damage.

Grenades are randomly generated without specifying their type; players cannot predict their landing point or element. In high-intensity combat, unexpectedly generated melee grenades may cause the player to enter a "Fight for Your Life!" state.

Compared to other class mods that provide stable damage increases, damage reductions, or skill cooldown benefits, the positive benefits of this mod are unclear, while the negative risks are objectively present.

5. Kaleidoscope

This shotgun, crafted by Maliwan, fires slow-moving spherical projectiles that explode in a small area upon impact. Its base damage is lower than that of white shotguns of the same level. Even with the bonus protection stat, its damage output is insufficient to effectively eliminate enemies in Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode.

The slow trajectory makes it difficult to hit moving targets at medium range, while close-range combat puts significant pressure on the player's survivability. Compared to Maliwan's many powerful items in Borderlands 3, this equipment is significantly less efficient in terms of damage output.

6. Extra Medium

This shield drops from a Vault Boss. Its effect is to release an Element Nova when the shield is depleted. In Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, this Nova deals low damage, has a small effective radius, and its health reduction effect on most enemies is negligible.

The accidental damage from regular firearms usually far exceeds Nova's output. Many Nova-type shields in Borderlands 4 suffer from insufficient damage, and the extra mid-section, being a boss-exclusive drop, exhibits a significant gap between its effectiveness and its difficulty of acquisition.

7. Potato Thrower IV

This weapon fires potato projectiles. Its single-shot damage is extremely low, having almost no effect on enemy health in Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode. This design leans more towards fun than practical use. It fails to provide effective firepower when efficient completion of challenging high-difficulty content is required.

8. Cold Shoulder

This rifle belongs to Moxy series. Its bullet spread is large, resulting in a low actual hit rate. Even when it occasionally hits an enemy, the single-shot damage is low. The weapon has a chance to generate freezing bubbles around the target, freezing nearby enemies.

However, because of bullet spread issues, frozen enemies remain difficult to hit consecutively. This equipment's design differs from some classic weapons in Moxy series, which are characterized by accuracy and high damage. In Borderlands 4 Items, this weapon's hit rate and damage output are not advantageous.

9. Compleation Shield

This shield drops from Battle Wagon. Its unique mechanic is that whenever the shield is fully charged, it automatically loses one armor segment. This effect does not provide any positive benefits.

Harlo's Elephant's Foot skill requires the entire shield to break, not just a single armor segment. If the shield has a Scavenger or Overshield affix, the actual trigger frequency of these affixes is affected because it cannot remain fully charged.

10. Prince Harming

This SMG is crafted by Ripper. Its effect is: hitting an enemy inflicts self-damage on the user and applies a stack of Cruelty.

Upon defeating an enemy, each stack of Cruelty restores a certain amount of Overshield, up to a maximum of 30 stacks. Gearbox previously adjusted this, reducing the self-damage percentage from 5% to 1.5% of damage dealt, while increasing base damage by 24%.

However, in Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, the character's base damage output is high, and the 1.5% self-damage percentage, accumulated over consecutive hits, is still significant. Overshield restoration requires the weapon to secure a kill, and self-damage continuously depletes the player's effective health, creating a contradiction in gameplay.

In Borderlands 4, several other pieces of equipment also have low practical effectiveness. These items may have issues such as demanding trigger conditions, insufficient damage, or noticeable negative effects.

The above ten pieces of equipment demonstrate low practical value in Borderlands 4. Players should prioritize other equipment that provides more consistent benefits when building their characters. Future balance patches may adjust the values or mechanics of some of these items.
