Here's some news everyone's been waiting for: Borderlands 4 Story Pack 1, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, will officially launch on March 26th!
Alongside the new Vault Hunter C4SH, players can explore a brand-new area, events, and collectibles; exciting new boss battles; and tons of loot, after months of feedback and community discussion, the developers have finally confirmed that Shared Progression will also be launching with Story Pack 1.
Please note that this is not to be confused with cross-platform; this feature is still under development. However, it will revolutionize how you create new characters, improve replayability, and slightly corporate.
Shared Progression
The developers have now confirmed that this feature will be ready when the new content launches. Shared Progression will allow you to carry over various progress elements between different characters, including:
- Collectibles
- Map exploration progress
- Fast travel unlocks
- SDU tokens
- Vault fragments
- Glide pack upgrades
- Vehicle unlocks
- Hover drive upgrades
In short, starting a new character no longer feels like beginning from scratch, eliminating hours of repetitive and tedious work. You can focus more on what truly matters: leveling up, experimenting with different character builds, and experiencing new content.
This finally fixes one of the biggest complaints players had with Borderlands 4: low replayability due to the repetitive progress system. Many players previously avoided creating new characters because re-unlocking all content was too tedious. Now, this barrier has been completely removed.
A Better Time to Jump Back In
Now might be the perfect time to jump back in, and with the upcoming expansion pack introducing C4SH and other content, many players, including returning veterans and newcomers, are expected to come back.
Shared Progression means returning players no longer feel punished for starting fresh. Instead, they can jump straight into new content without losing their previous progress.
One unresolved question remains: is this system optional? Some players prefer a completely new experience when creating a new character. While the developers haven't confirmed whether Shared Progression can be enabled or disabled, the general community suggestion is that the game should offer this flexibility.
Mad Ellie and Vault of the Damned
Besides the highly anticipated gameplay optimizations, the studio's main focus is Borderlands 4's first major DLC - Mad Ellie and Vault of the Damned, set in a frozen wasteland, bringing new enemies, loot, and a brand-new Vault Hunter.
In Whispering Glacier, you'll find yourself in a chilling new story where an evil cosmic force threatens world of Kairos. You'll fight alongside Ellie to uncover the truth behind Vault of the Damned.
Leading you on this journey is the enigmatic Mancubus Bloodtooth, a beloved returning character. Prepare to be confronted with his unpredictable personality!
The new Vault Hunter C4SH's combat design revolves around probability manipulation and high-risk, high-reward mechanics. One of his signature abilities, Sleight of Hand, allows him to draw cards from a random deck and unleash powerful spell-like attacks. Like other Vault Hunters, he also features:
- Three distinct Action Skills
- Three branching skill trees
- A wide range of Passives and Augments
You can experiment with different combinations to create diverse characters, especially when paired with the new equipment added in DLC.
New Enemies, Bosses, and Rewards
Whispering Glacier is not only visually hostile, but also filled with dangerous enemies and tricky encounters. DLC features 2 major boss encounters and 16 smaller fights, where you'll encounter battle-hardened DAHL Legion soldiers, ferocious creatures like Kraggons, and ruthless Scav factions.
Of course, there's plenty of new loot to chase. Story Pack 1 brings a substantial amount of loot and Borderlands 4 items, which you can collect here:
- 3 new Pearlescent weapons
- 11 new Legendary items
These include Grenades, Heavy weapons, Shields, and Class mods. These items, combined with C4SH's unique mechanics, will greatly expand the game's replayability. However, the developers haven't yet revealed the specific forms of these weapons; you can look forward to it.
Besides in-game rewards, this DLC introduces a large amount of cosmetic content, including:
- Vault Hunter heads and skins
- Exclusive C4SH customization options
- Weapon and vehicle skins
- ECHO-4 drone cosmetics
These additions allow players to further personalize their gameplay experience.
How to Access DLC?
To access Whispering Glacier, you must first own Story Pack 1 and then complete Fadefields' mission, "A Lot to Process."
It's recommended that your character reach level 13 or higher before entering the game. Alternatively, you can create a new Vault Hunter and jump directly to level 13 to access DLC, making it easier to experience the new content.
More Content in 2026
Borderlands 4 Story Pack 1 is just the beginning. The studio has already released an ambitious roadmap for the game in 2026, with planned updates including:
- Additional endgame challenges, similar to the raid boss Bloomreaper the Invincible
- Bounty Packs 3, 4, and 5, introducing new missions and rewards
- A new Vault Card system with unlockable gear and cosmetics
- Story Pack 2 in Q3 2026, featuring another new Vault Hunter and a brand-new zone
In addition, the aforementioned cross-platform feature is reportedly under development, meaning players may save their progress across platforms this year, an improvement many players have been hoping for.
That concludes all the known information about the new DLC for Borderlands 4. The developers recently showcased the powerful features of C4SH on social media, and Story Pack 1 is expected to be a landmark release for the game. Let's look forward to it!
